Subject: Any October Songs?
From: GeoffLawes

      -Joe Offer-

Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of October ie: (A) Any songs with October in the title (B) Any songs with an October date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in October even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. - Regards, GeoffLawes

Margaret lay on a fine feather bed
The Halloween drew near
When a dreadful form came to her room
And to her did appear.

"Are you my father the king" she said
"Are you my brother John
Or are you my truelove William
From Scotland coming home?"

"I'm not your father the king" he said
"I'm not your brother John
But I am your truelove William
From Scotland I've returned?"

"Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said
"In love, in charity
Will you give me back the plighted troth
That once, love, I gave thee."

"No I'll not give you back your plighted troth
Nor any other thing
Until you take me to your father's house
Where oft-times I have have been."

He's taken her to his father's house
And as they did enter in
The gates swung open at their own free will
To let young William in.

"Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said
"In love, in charity
Will you give me back the plighted troth
That once, love, I gave thee."

"No I'll not give you back your plighted troth
Nor any other thing
Until you take me to the chapel hall
And marry me with a ring."

He's taken her to the chapel hall
And as they did enter in
The locks flew asunder at their own free will
To let young William in.

"Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said
"In love, in charity
Will you give me back the plighted troth
That once, love, I gave thee."

She took the cross from around her neck
And laid it on his breast
Saying "Take you back your plighted troth
And in Heaven your soul find rest."

Silent stood the red red cock
But loudly called the grey
"It is time for the living to depart the dead
And so you must away."

HALLOWEEN    by The Singing Postman

The Singing Postman – Halloween
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-ogTQqP6NQ

Some folks say by the light of the day
They don't believe tha's true
That folks will roam, far from their home
And the witches make their brew
Dew you go where the lights are low
They don't seem quite so keen
And they don't dare, go anywhere
On the night of Hallowe'en.

Now we all go down to the old churchyard
I dust you go inside
You're not far from the old hall beyond
Where the headless horsemen ride
Then you prick those doors seven times
And I know that you will scream
When the devil pops his head out the top
On the night of Hallowe'en.

Ghosts don't like nobody
They all make awful cries
They weep and moan, grunt and groan
And they don't like exorcise
See them walk through the castle walls
As though there's nothin' between
So don't you stray, too far away
On the night of Hallowe'en.

Now we all know Shuck he's a rare old dog
He likes to prowl around
Waiting for, down on the shore
The master who was drowned
His hair is black, his teeth are red
His eyes oh how they gleam
If he gets you, it's toodle-oo
On the night of Hallowe'en

THREE SCORE AND TEN

October's night left such a sight, was never seen before:
There was masts and spars and broken yards came floating to the shore.

But It seems that the folk process has had it's way with the facts since the original broadside poem was prefaced

Another "Hallowe'en" - from the poem by Violet Jacob, set to music by Jim Reid, and here sung by Sheena Wellington and Karine Polwart: it refers to the poet losing her son, Lachlan in WW1. Absolutely haunting.
Hallowe'en (Violet Jacob)

HALLOWE'EN words by Violet Jacob (1920)
Music, Jim Reid.

The tattie-liftin's nearly through,
They're plooin' whaur the barley grew
And efter dark roond ilka stack
You'll see the horsemen stand and crack
O Lachlan, but I mind on you.

I mind fu' aften we hae seen
Ten thoosand stars keek doon atween.
The naked branches, and below
Baith fairm and bothy hae their show
A-low wi' lichts o' Hallowe'en.

There's bairns wi' guys that's at their tail
Cloorin' the doors wi' runts o' kail
And fine you'll hear the screechs an' skirls
O' lassies wi' their drookit curls
Bobbin' for aipples i' the pail.

The bothy fire is loupin' heat.
A new heid-horseman's kist is set.
Richt's o'er the lamp whaur by the blaze
The auld yin stood that kept yer claes.
I cannae thole tae see it yet.

But gin the auld folks' tales are richt
An' ghaists cam hame on Hallow'n nicht,
Oh freend, oh freends, what would I gie
Tae feel yer rax yer hand tae me
Atween the dark an' coral licht!

Awa' in France across the wave,
The wee lichts burn on ilka grave
An' you an' me their lowes hae seen.
Ye'll maybe hae yer Hallowe'en
Yont whaur you're lyin' wi’ the lave.

There's drink an' daff an' sang an' dance,
An' ploys an' kisses get their chance,
But Lachlan, man, the place I see
Is whaur yer auld kist used tae be,
An' the lichts o' Hallowe'en in France.

[As sung by Jean Redpath on "Leaving the Land," 1990. Also recorded by The Sangsters on "Sharp & Sweet," 2001; and by Sheena Wellington on "Scots Women," 2001, as well as the video linked above.

Another favourite, by Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem, Tommy having written the song.
The Grey October Clouds

THE GREY OCTOBER CLOUDS
                        Tommy Makem

The summer birds have gathered on their journey to the sun,
I saw the wild geese heading South on their October run,
The last crop has been harvested and all the work is done,
And the grey October clouds go drifting by.
Chorus
Drifting by, drifting by, and the grey October clouds go drifting by.

At summer dawns I walked along by silver singing streams,
The lark song filled the early morn, and I could dream my dreams,
The good times passed so quickly, that was long ago it seems,
And the grey October clouds go drifting by…………..
Chorus

In memory’s field my fancies ran, wild flowers can be seen
On every hill and valley and meadows in between,
The leaves of brown came tumbling down from trees that once were green,
And the grey October clouds go drifting by………………
Chorus

In the summer of our lifetime, the skies seemed always blue,
We’d dream our dreams with youthful thoughts and hope that they’d come true,
Believe in all your youthful dreams and they’ll live on for you,
And the grey October clouds go drifting by…………………
Chorus x 2

And for anyone doing kids' Hallowe'en parties, here are a couple more less serious songs!

1. HALLOWE'EN (From Music Time for Brownies)

Tonight is the night when dead leaves fly
Like witches and switches across the sky
When elf and sprite flit through the night
Om a moony sheen, on a moony sheen.

Tonight is the night when leaves do sound
Like gnomes in their homes far beneath the ground,
When spooks and trolls creep out of holes,
Dark and mossy green, dark and mossy green.

Tonight is the night when pumpkins stare
Through brown sheaves and leaves almost everywhere,
When ghoul and ghost and goblin host
Dance round their queen, for it’s Hallowe’en.

(Suggested accompaniment for this is a spooky “wobble board”! or gentle use of a “thunder tube” might work)
The whole thing can be accompanied by a drone in A or B minor. Can supply the tune if anyone wants it.

2.
THE HALLOWE’EN QUARTERMASTER
                Trish Santer 24.10.06.
(You'll know the tune for this one, I guess!)

There were witches, witches, wearing stripy britches
In the stores, in the stores,
There were witches, witches, wearing stripy britches
In the quartermaster’s stores.

Chorus
My eyes are dim , I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me,
I have not brought my specs with me.

There were rats, rats, big as tiger cats, etc.

There were spiders, spiders, drinking pints of cider, etc.

There were wizards, wizards, eating chicken gizzards, etc.

There were bats, bats, we were wearing them as hats, etc.

There were ghouls, ghouls, playing with garden tools, etc

There were pumpkins, pumpkins, brought in by some numpties, etc.

There were brooms, brooms, flying round the room, etc

There were ghosts, ghosts, bumping into posts, etc

Thanks Guest: I was even at that concert! It appeared as 2 separate clips on YouTube listings: very sorry for any duplication: but I know that Sheena has it, just herself, on one of her own CDs too!
What was slightly disappointing was not to find a YouTube of Jim Reid himself singing it: I'm sure I have it on one of his CDs. But the quoted version is great.

THE SINKING OF THE REUBEN JAMES by Woody Guthrie.

One hundred men were drowned in that dark watery grave
When that good ship went down, only forty four were saved
Twas the last day of October that we saved the forty four
From the cold icy water off the cold Iceland shore.

THE FAMOUS PIG SONG

(Clarke Van Ness, music by F. Henri Klickmann)

'Twas an evening in October, I'll confess I wasn't sober,
I was carting home a load with manly pride,
When my feet began to stutter and I fell into the gutter,
And a pig came up and lay down by my side.
Then I lay there in the gutter and my heart was all a-flutter,
Till a lady, passing by, did chance to say:
"You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses,"
Then the pig got up and slowly walked away.

TURNING TOWARD THE MORNING
(Gordon Bok)

Now October's growing thin
And November's coming home;
You'll be thinking of the season
And the sad things that you've seen,
And you hear that old wind walking,
Hear him singing high and thin,
You could swear he's out there singing
Of your sorrow.

Columbus Day is celebrated (by some) on 12 October, commemorating his arrival in the West Indies on that date in 1492. Many songs make incidental mention of Columbus,
e.g.,SAUERKRAUT, by Lou & Peter Berryman, has a stanza,

Could you dump this ice out in the bathtub, can you dig it
Here we're dumping out the ice to make some room to make some more;
How'd you like a chicken that came over with Columbus?
Well I've got one here, Don't mention it, dear. That's what friends are for.

by Tom Lewis:

Columbus he set sail to find out if the world was round
He kept up sailing to the West until he ran aground
He thought he found the Indians but he found the USA
I know some navigators who can still do that today

In answer to Geoff Lawes, no that's not Jim Reid singing in the YouTube link you gave: it's Daniel Kelly (as it says in the script accompanying the video!!) and he does make a nice job of it, though he has a deeper voice than Jim's.
You might like this track of Jim singing: the songs are seasonal anyway and include what is perhaps his best-known setting of a Violet Jacob poem - Norland Wind (aka The Wild Geese):

P.S. If you look further into the script accompanying Daniel Kelly's singing of "Hallowe'en" it seems he had the same problem of not being able to find a YouTube of Jim Reid singing it, but he has linked to some of the other versions already mentioned above. I'll have a look through my Jim Reid CDs to see if I can find it.

AllisonA(Animaterra), thank you for

THE CASTLE OF DROMORE
The October winds lament
around the castle of Dromore
Yet peace is in her lofty halls
My loving treasure store

Though Autumn leaves may droop and die
a bud of spring are you sing hush-a-by
loo,la-lo,la lan
sing hush-a-by loo la lo

Bring no ill will to hinder us
my helpless babe and me dread spirits
of the blackwater clan owen's wild banshee
and Holy Mary pitying us in Heaven
for grace doth sue sing hush-a-by
loo,la-lo,la lan sing hush-a-by loo la lo

Take time to thrive my ray of hope
in the garden of Dromore
Take heed young eaglet
till thy wings are feathered fit to
soar a little rest and then the world
is full of work to do
sing hush-a-by loo,
la-lo,la lan sing hush-a-by loo la lo

Here's to the man who drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober.
Here's to the man who drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober.
He falls as the leaves do fall,

LANDLORD FILL THE FLOWING BOWL
Many recordings of Landlord Fill The Flowing Bowl on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Come+Landlord+Fill+the+Flowing+Bowl

Come Landlord fill the flowing bowl Until it doth run over,
Come landlord fill the flowing bowl Until it doth run over,

CHORUS For tonight we'll merry merry be
For tonight we'll merry merry be
For tonight we'll merry merry be
Tomorrow we'll be sober.

The man who drinketh small beer And goes to bed quite sober,
Fades as the leaves do fade That drop off in October.

The man who drinketh strong beer And goes to bed right mellow,
Lives as he ought to live, And dies a jolly fellow.

But he who drinks just what he likes And getteth half seas over,
Will live until he die, perhaps, And then lie down in clover.

The man who kisses a pretty girl And goes and tells his mother,
Ought to have his lips cut off, And never kiss another.

The maiden who enjoys a kiss and comes back for another,
She's a boon to all mankind and soon to be a mother.

Come into the garden Maud And don't be so particular,
For if the grass is very very wet, We'll do it perpendicular.

If I had a pile of bricks I'd build my chimney higher.
That would stop the neighbour's cat from pissing in the fi-er.

THE MEN OF NORTH LEW

Collected by Baring Gould.

The song tells of a Bell Ringing contest between the villages of North Lew and Broadwoodwidger both in Devon.
The first round took place in Ashwater and round two in Callington Cornwall. North Lew won both rounds.

The Bellringing Sung by Alan Rosevear in Exeter, Roud Number 1515. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfxh49WAFvc

The Bellringing

One day in October, neither drunken nor sober,
O'er Broadbury Down I was mending my way,
When I heard of some ringing, some dancing and singing.
I'll always remember that Jubilee Day.

Chorus: 'Twas in Ashwater town, the bells they did sound,
They rang for a belt and a hat laced with gold.
And the men of Northlew rang so steady and true
That there never were better in Devon I hold.

'Twas misunderstood, for the men of Broadwood
Rang a peel on the tenor should never have been.
But the men of Northlew rang so steady and true,
A difficult matter to beat them I ween.
(Chorus)

Those of Broadwood being naughty, then said to our party,
We'll ring you a challenge again in a round.
We'll give you the chance in St. Stephen's by Launceston;
The prize to the winner a note of five pound.

Chorus: 'Twas in Callington town, the bells they did sound, etc.

So the match it went on, at good Callington,
And the bells they rang out o'er the valley below.
And the old and young people, the hale and the feeble,
They came out to hear the sweet bell music flow.

Chorus: 'Twas in Callington town, the bells they did sound, etc.

Those of Broadwood once more were obliged to give o'er,
They were beaten completely again in a round.
But the men of Northlew rang so steady and true;
No better than they in the West can be found.

Chorus: 'Twas in Ashwater town then in Callington Town, etc

Thank you GUEST,Derrick !

During last night's Zoom session of one of our local folk clubs, we were reminded that the Eyemouth tragedy took place during October. The singer had written her own song, of which I do not have the lyrics, but here is the late John Watt's song (copied from the DT)

EYEMOUTH TRAGEDY
(John Watt)

By the dire rocks o' Urquhart, though deadly were the signs
Out sailed the Eyemouth 'fyvies' with a thousand baited lines.
Though a glasslike sea and a cloudless sky made the elders bid them stay
But these are the times the brave men die, but the 'halflins" (?) held the sway.

Three leagues from the shore the lines were cast while the wind it held its breath
And the sails hung limp from every mast and the sea was still as death
For death was the bride that came that day, cut the ribbons from the creels
'Twas a raging wave hit Eyemouth town and took her bonny chiels.

There's many a bride has lost her groom as the death-toll quickly grew,
Craig's and Collin's met their doom, aye, Bargain and Fairbairn too
Maltman, Scott all Eyemouth bred, they died in the wind and rain
Oh, the flooer o' Eyemouth town lay dead, but her sons would rise again.

The grinding turn o' the hearse wheel in October '81
Made every man and woman kneel in prayer for Eyemouth's sons,
For this was the price they had to pay, the livin' and the dead
And the price that Eyemouth paid that day tae earn her daily bread.

One of the funniest versions of Tam o’Shanter that I have ever seen is as performed by The New Rope String Band. (The purist Burns scholars might not!) It is on YouTube in 2 sections, but the video doesn’t really do it justice : one of those where you really had to be there and see it live. There is some fiddling on it, but not really in the sense of setting the whole poem to a tune.
Here’s a link to part 1: Tam o’Shanter part 1

'The Loyalists and Rebels both had different music concerning their side of the story. One song of the patriots is a song called “The Old Woman Taught Wisdom”. there is a Mudcat thread called "2 songs for 21 October". One of the songs is Grey October, which is already on the October song list. The other is called TAKING NELSON HOME and marks Trafalgar Day, when Horatio Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets off the coast of Spain in 1805. Lyrics are given on that thread for both songs. A commentator suggests Mike O'Connor's song "Carrying Nelson Home".

JOHN’S GARDEN
by Peter Mayer

Farmer John wandered back
And when he reached the pumpkin patch, began to speak
He said "the weather's getting colder
Summer's over and it's almost Halloween
That's the day, the reason you were raised
When everything about your life will change
You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
But remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart"

The pumpkins held a meeting then
Some were very apprehensive and afraid
"Could this really happen to us?
What could be the meaning?" is what they were saying
"This is home, it's all we've ever known"
Then one bold, outspoken pumpkin spokeHe said
"I don't need eyes to see , it sounds like a lie to me
I like it just fine here in John's garden
And remember that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart"

There is much to ask and to ponder in the pumpkin patch
When imposing old October shows up at last
Then a pumpkin from the farther end
Who had been silent up till then
Over the commotion, said
"What would you rather have my friends
A chance to shine, or die here on the vine?
The better way seems very plain to me
You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
And maybe that candle shines for only the briefest time
In a jack-o-lantern's heart
Oh, but one goblin's smile should make it all well worth while
You know you might even see the starlight
And knowing that time is brief, makes it that much more sweet
When you have a jack-o-lantern's heart"

He had a head like a toy shop, bow legged stance off,
Must have been the rolling sea.
Some old salty, how he used to rock me.

Jelly roll or Jerry Lee, how he used to rock me.
Hull Fair waltzers, bopping to Brenda Lee.
River boat jazz cruise, jiving to the Two-Nineteen.
Some old salty, how he used to rock me.

Down there for dancing, come on Mr Chester please.
Play "Deliah's gone" for one more round, some old Salty's on his feet.

PUNKIE NIGHT

Punkie Night is a traditional West Country holiday practised on the last Thursday of October in Somerset.Children will march around with a jack o'lantern, singing the following song :

It's Punkie Night tonight,
It's Punkie Night tonight.
Give us a candle,
Give us a light.
It's Punkie Night tonight.

It's Punkie Night tonight,
It's Punkie Night tonight.
Adam and Eve,
Just wouldn't believe
It's Punkie Night tonight.

The "Punkie Night Song" is sung to a tune similar to "The Farmer in the Dell".

Hi,

No idea what this was about, but nothing about Griet Zelle (performing under the name Mata Hari) suggests she was a spy. Since she lived so close-by in her youth, her history gets the occasional mention here. As the whole affair is more than a hundred years ago, the archives about her are now accessible to the public, but still nothing about spies. Griet fled when her father went broke, and she seems to have lived her life to always make sure people provided her with enough money. That's not really anything special, and neither is it that she liked boys wearing uniforms and boys not wearing uniforms.
If there is something to say about her, fine, but please write something that makes sense.

Bye

THE WOBBLING MAN (John Neville) from http://www.johnnevillemusic.com/?page_id=30#C11
As a cold October morn begins
An old man cries for his past sins
To his lips a picture I see him press
Of a dancing woman in a wedding dress

THE PIG GOT UP (Benjamin Hapgood Burt)
One evening in October
When I was about one-third sober
And was taking home a load with manly pride
My poor feet began to stutter
So I lay down in the gutter
And a pig came up and lay down by my side

SONGS ABOUT THE HUNGARIAN UPRISING OF 1956

The Hungarian uprising against Soviet domination lasted from October 23 to November 10, 1956.

Later, János Bródy composed Ha én rózsa volnék (If I was a rose), generally interpreted as referring to the uprising (as well as continuing resistance). See
LyricsTranslate for several translations. Its best-known performer is Zsuzsa Koncz; in 1973, she recorded it on an album quickly pulled from shelves (YouTube) and there are various live recordings of her. And here is Márta Sebestyén with a traditional-style unaccompanied rendition.

After the suppression of the uprising, on January 6, 1957, Elvis Presley appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and asked for relief donations, dedicating Peace in the Valley to the people of Hungary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paeOBN5e7iM

For the 60th anniversary, Desmond Child (of Bon Jovi) wrote Land of the Free, which made its debut in a choral performance on Hungarian radio -- see article with recording.

VA DANSER
words: Gaston Couté; music: Marcel Legay

"Va danser" (Go and dance), a song from the 1930s, depicts the philosophical farewell of a dying harvester to his sweetheart as the music of the October harvest celebration sounds outdoors. He tells her to leave him, go dance and choose a man to love, for no one should be without love.

October 17, 1867: Thirteen workers constructing the Hoosac Tunnel in Massachusetts suffocate after being trapped at the bottom of the "Central Shaft" by a fire above. See contemporary account and photos

HOOSAC TUNNEL by Dana Robinson (Bandcamp)

The final lines, calling the Hoosac a "cursed tunnel," allude to the tunnel's terrible reputation that led the workers to dub it the "Bloody Pit." Nearly 200 of the construction crew died there over the 24 years that it took to complete it, the October 1867 incident merely being the most casualties at a single time. As of the 1970s, the tunnel became a highly popular source of ghost stories and ghost sightings.

The Hartlake Bridge tragedy occurred on 20 October 1853, when a cart carrying hop pickers veered off Hartlake Bridge into the River Medway and over 30 people were drowned. There are local memorials in that area of Kent.

On this day, 6 October 1829, trials began at Rainhill for a locomotive to use on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway. On 8 October 1829, Stephenson’s Rocket was declared the winner.

RAILWAY SONG by Roy the Taxi Driver     Rainhill trials

From Newcastle to Liverpool down came the Rocket man.
To start a revolution had long since been his plan.
To get the world a moving for years had been his dream,
On two long tracks all made of steel, and an engine powered by steam.

So plans were made and tracks were laid for the Rainhill loco trials,
And crowds had gathered down the course that stretched out for three miles.
It was to be a contest, a test of strength and speed,
George Stephenson arrived that day aboard his iron steed.

HYMNS, CAROLS & SONGS BY RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

12 October 1872 Ralph Vaughan Williams was born 150 years ago in the village of Down Ampney in the Cotswolds. His earliest published works appeared at the turn of the 20th century (the song Linden Lea being among the first, as well as the cycle Songs of Travel a few years later).

'Bushes and Briars' was famously sung by Mr Potiphar to Ralph Vaughan Williams at Ingrave, Essex on December 4 1903, which RVW said 'set all my doubts about folk-song at rest'.

Alex Glasgow, a pitman's son from Gateshead, wrote CLOSE THE COALHOUSE DOOR  originally for a BBC radio programme. It later became the title song for the 1968 stage musical written by him and Alan Plater. He added the “bairns” verse after the Aberfan disaster, about which see also Leon Rosselson's song Palaces of Gold.

versions of a love song in Scottish Gaelic, THA MO RÚN AIR A’ GHILLE refer to Oídhche Shamhna, which is Hallowe'en night.
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=171787

Oidhche Shamhna ghabhas mi òran,
Nam b’aite leam dhèanainn òran;
‘S truagh a Righ nach mi bha pòsd’
Aig òigear a’ chùil dualaich.

(I’d sing my song on Halloween;
If I could I would compose one;
It’s a pity that I am not married
To the youth with the curly hair.)

or, as sung by Mary Jane Lamond https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U3OYYgWnYI:

Oidhche Shamhna dhomh 's mi m'ònar
Smaointich mi gun dianainn òran
'S truagh a Rìgh nach mi bha pòsd'
Ri òigear a' chùil dualaich

(Alone on Halloween night
I thought I would compose a song
It's a pity I wasn't married
To the yout2h with the curly hair)

Anna Murray https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wzCYz3OVx0 sings instead of a summer night; it would be easy to sing "Oidhche Shamhna" instead of "oidhche shamhraidh"!

Oidhche shamhraidh dhomh 's mi'm ònar
Air mo ghaol sa ni mì òran
'S truagh a rìgh, nach robh mi pòsd
Aig òigear a' chùil dualaich

(Alone on a summer night
I will make a song about my love
It's a pity I wasn't married
to the youth with the curly hair)

HOLD THE FORT
October 5,1864. The Battle of Allatoona Pass was fought in Bartow County, Georgia during the American Civil War. "Hold the Fort!" was written as a hymn in 1870 by Philip Paul Bliss who was inspired by hearing about an incident in this battle. At the end of the nineteenth century it was re-written by the British Transport Workers as a union song.

Launch of Sputnik 1: The Glorious People's Russian Satellite Moon was an attempt by the Goons at a topical song. I only ever heard it once, on the wireless. Two things make it memorable for me:

* It was apparently the flip side of the Ying Tong Song (which was somewhat funnier).

* Said record was very audibly a 78RPM.

This thread originally was meant to list songs associated with the month of October ie: (A) Any songs with October in the title (B) Any songs with an October date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in October even if the lyrics do not actually say so.

What does the fact that the composer or the singer of a song was born or died or took a dump in October has to to with the song being catalogued as an October song? If you take this as a criterium then you can add any existing song to any of the month threads which makes this whole operation completeley meaningless.

And I do *not* want you to link to any Mainly Norfolk pages to this travesty.

8–10 October, 1871 The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the American city of Chicago. The fire started in the O'Leary family's barn at 137 DeKoven Street, Chicago, but because of a high wind and dry conditions, it spread to burn a large percentage of the city.

Work began on Empress of Britain on 28 November 1928 when the plates of her keel were laid at John Brown & Co, Clydebank, Scotland. She was launched on 11 June 1930 by the Prince of Wales.
In her time Empress of Britain was the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship between the United Kingdom and Canada, and the largest ship in the Canadian Pacific fleet.
She was torpedoed on 28 October 1940 by U-32 and sank. At 42,348 GRT she was the largest liner lost in the Second World War and the largest ship sunk by a U-boat. Wikipedia

THE SONG OF THE CLYDE is a song by R.Y. Bell and Ian Gourley. Popularised by Kenneth McKellar, it is an affectionate tribute to the River Clyde.

But from Glasgow to Greenock, in towns on each side,
The hammers' "ding-dong" is the song of the Clyde.

'Tis here that the sea-going liners are born:
But, unlike the salmon, they seldom return.

FRANKIE AND JOHNNY

October 15, 1899. Frankie Baker , a 22-year-old woman living in St. Louis, Missouri, shot her 17-year-old lover Allen (also known as Albert) Britt in the abdomen. He died of his wounds four days later. This murder is one likely inspiration for the song ‘Frankie and Johnny ‘

1777: British commander General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in the United States War of Independence.

Several songs have been written about the Battle of Saratoga. However, Wikipedia reports that YANKEE DOODLE was played at the British surrender at Saratoga in 1777. The song had evolved during the conflict.

An alternate verse that the British are said to have marched to is attributed to an incident involving Thomas Ditson of Billerica, Massachusetts. Ditson attempted to purchase a Brown Bess musket from a British soldier in the 47th Regiment of Foot in Boston on March 1775; after a group of the soldier's comrades spotted the transaction as it was occurring, they tarred and feathered Ditson in order to prevent any such illegal purchases from happening in the future. Ditson eventually managed to secure a musket and fought at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. For this reason, the town of Billerica is called the home of "Yankee Doodle":
Yankee Doodle came to town, For to buy a firelock,
We will tar and feather him, And so we will John Hancock.

Another pro-British set of lyrics believed to have used the tune was published in June 1775 following the Battle of Bunker Hill:
The seventeen of June, at Break of Day, The Rebels they supriz'd us,
With their strong Works, which they'd thrown up, To burn the Town and drive us.

"Yankee Doodle" was played at the British surrender at Saratoga in 1777. A variant is preserved in the 1810 edition of Gammer Gurton's Garland: Or, The Nursery Parnassus, collected by Francis Douce:
Yankey Doodle came to town, How do you think they serv'd him?
One took his bag, another his scrip, The quicker for to starve him.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain that which is to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time of love, and a time of hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
