Subject: Any December Songs?
From: Levana Taylor
Date: 16 Nov 21 - 06:39 PM

This is an edited PermaThread®, used for a special project. This thread will be moderated by Geoff Lawes and Levana Taylor. Feel free to post to this thread, but remember that all messages posted here are subject to editing or deletion.
      -Joe Offer-

The songs-of-the-month threads need one for December that does not include anything specifically about the solstice or midwinter holidays, those having their own. Here's a few to begin...

ALPHABETICAL DECEMBER INDEX Below is an alphabetical index of titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be "jumped" to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occur. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. We will sometimes rearrange “late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below.- Regards ,Geoff Lawes

ONE COLD MORNING IN DECEMBER

One cold morning in December,
I've reason to remember,
I fell in love with such a charming girl.
Her eyes were bright and tender, her form was tall and slender,
Her hair it hung around her head in curls.

Along the streets together, regardless of the weather,
She took me to a house that stood quite near.
She closed the door behind me, to me she said so kindly,
"It's warmer in the bed, love, than down here."

Sung by Walter Pardon (1978)

O MAY, THY MORN
(by Robert Burns)

O May, thy morn was ne'er so sweet
As the mirk night o' December!
For sparkling was the rosy wine,
And private was the chamber:
And dear was she I dare na name,
But I will aye remember.

THE BALLAD OF ST. ANNE'S REEL
(by David Mallett)

He was stranded in a tiny town on fair Prince Edward Island
Waiting for a ship to come and find him
A one horse place, a friendly face, some coffee and a tiny trace
Of fiddling in the distance far behind him

.............

Now the sailor's gone, the room is bare, the old piano's setting there
Someone's hat's left hanging on the rack
Some empty chairs, the wooden floor that feels the touch of shoes no more
Awaiting for the dancers to come back

And the fiddle's in the closet of some daughter of the town
The strings are broke, the bow is gone and the cover's buttoned down
But sometimes on December nights, when the air is cold and the wind is right
There's a melody that passes through the town.

The various broadside ballads about naval combats against Turkish vessels ("The Royal Oak," "The Turkish Man-of-War," "Captain Mansfield's Fight," etc. etc.) are often supposed to have been inspired by an action on December 9, 1669, in which an English squadron under Admiral Kempthorne defeated nine Algerian ships. However, this thread points out that the 1669 battle may be the best known but not the only one, and that few or no specific details in the ballads link them to Kempthorne. (And when they give some date, it is not in December.)

THE WALKER OF THE SNOW
(Poem, Charles Dawson Shanly, 1859; set to music by Sean Tyrrell.)

To the cold December heaven came the pale moon and the stars,
As the yellow sun was sinking behind the purple bars.
The snow was deeply drifted upon the ridges drear
That lay for miles between me and the camp for which we steer.

The Digital Tradition entry for The Walker of the Snow (see Levana's link on this thread 16 Nov) says "Sung by Davy Spillane on "Shadow Hunter," TARACD 3023, 1990". Davy Spillane plays on his album, but the singing is unmistakably that of Seán Tyrrell (r.i.p. 30 Oct 2021). I saw Seán and Davy at a gig once. Davy played uilleann pipes and whistle and I don't remember him singing anything.

ÁIRD A' CHUAIN
Aird a' Chuain, Ardaigh Chuain (various renderings of the place name) is a song about someone abroad (in Scotland) missing home on the north Antrim coast of Ireland. One verse mentions Nollaig, which can mean either the month of December or the Christmas holiday.

Is iomai Nollag a bhí mé féin i mBun Abhainn Doine
Is mé gan chéill

SONGS ABOUT THE SIEGE OF DERRY

See the
August thread for a collection of songs about the Siege of Derry, 1689, part of a resistance against King James. Although the siege is annually commemorated on August 14, one of the most celebrated events (referenced in most songs) took place on December 7, 1688, when a group of apprentices shut the town gates against Jacobite forces.

DERRY'S WALLS
7 December 1688 The siege of Derry in 1689 was the first major event in the Williamite War in Ireland. The siege was preceded by a first attempt against the town by Jacobite forces on 7 December 1688 that was foiled when 13 apprentices shut the gates. This was an act of rebellion against James II.

HARVEY LOGAN

Out of all the incidents in Harvey Logan's violent, roving, and criminal life, this ballad focuses on a barroom fight and shootout with the police that took place in Knoxville, Tenn. in December, 1901; the jailbreak which, in this account, sounds like it was immediately afterward, was actually in June, 1903.

Another beautiful song from Graeme Miles which mentions December: copied from another thread:

WHEN THE SNOWS OF WINTER FALL
(Graeme Miles)

My yard is high with wood now, my cellar deep with coal,
My windows are well battened; I’ve sealed each crack and hole,
When the storms and winds come raging, I’ll not be touched at all,
For I’ll be well protected, when the snows of winter fall.

My sheep still wander freely, upon the lonely fell,
In the field my horse is grazing, and my cattle feed as well,
But come the bleak December, with its rain and sleet and squall,
They’ll be safely penned and stabled, when the snows of winter fall.

I look out from my doorway, to the trees on yonder rise,
Soon the leaves will turn to yellow as the summer fades and dies,
I’ll put on my coat of leather, and my love will don her shawl,
How close we’ll draw together, when the snows of winter fall.

Through the bitter cold and darkness, our hopes we will keep high,
For we know the warmth of summer will come back by and by,
Then we’ll walk into the sunshine wearing neither coat nor shawl,
And together we will listen just to hear the cuckoo call.

I am not a man of riches; I have little that is new,
Some livestock and some chattels, amount to very few,
But my love is here beside me; I need nothing more at all,
She will give her love and comfort, when the snows of winter fall.

My yard is high with wood now, my cellar deep with coal,
My windows are well battened; I’ve sealed each crack and hole,
When the storms and winds come raging, I’ll not be touched at all,
For I’ll be well protected, when the snows of winter fall.

PIG AND THE INEBRIATE

It was early last December, as near as I remember
I was walking down the street in tipsy pride
No one was I disturbing, as I lay down by the curbing
And a pig came up and lay down by my side

As I lay there in the gutter, thinking thoughts I cannot utter
A lady passing by was heard to say
"You can tell a man who boozes by the company he chooses"
And the pig got up and slowly walked away

MORE WOOD

When the spring rolls around and I spade the muddy ground
I have often found I lay my saw away,
The shed is empty and yet you can make a bet

And stack it away to season well, but

THE PERFECT FIELDS OF FREDERICKSBURG
by Larry Kaplan

The mower cuts the lower field,
The grass grows slow this year.
Still, every week, all summer long
I see that mower here.
Around the fields of Fredericksburg,
In this fair morning light,
A place we call a monument
Straight lines up Marye's Heights.

A mile further down this hill,
The river Burnside crossed,
Who razed this town clear to the ground,
Then every soldier lost.
The engine drones, the mower slows
Where young boys stood in fear.
It stops for time to clean the blades
Then slowly disappears.

The broken walls, the soldiers' calls,
The frightened guns are gone.
Still, shops that sell the souvenirs
Say, "Choose which side you're on."
And children search for evidence
To prove a war was here.
And perfect fields of Fredericksburg
Hide blood and bones, and tears.

In this video, Dermot Byrne has a story from the memoirs of Irish soldiers at the battle of Fredericksburg, concerning Irish troops on both sides singing "Ireland Boys Hurrah" together. The incident is also mentioned in the Mudcat thread about the song.

KITCHEN DANCE
by Larry Kaplan

Was a lonely old night; longest night of the year.
Biggest moon in the sky; biggest moon in ten years.
There's a chill in the air; hear the wind in the trees.
Says it's just another winter night. He doesn't mind.
He says, "It suits me."
Come a bump on the door, then a snap of the wind.
But there hasn't been a single soul come calling here since I don't know when.
Put the coffee pot down; better turn into bed.
There ain't nothing like a little sleep
To get these devils out of your head.

CHORUS (after each verse):
It's a lonely night; he could use a few songs.
Needs a banjo and a fiddle, and a little tune that isn't too long.
Dancing in the kitchen; talking 'bout the fishing last June.
Flirting with the ladies. Would you take a look at that moon!

In a minute or two he was deep in a sleep;
But there were tunes in his ear and the music was sweet.
Then he heard a voice call, "Roll the carpet back now.
Put the chairs in the corner. If you want to dance,
We're starting right now."
There was singing all night; how that fiddle bow flew!
Kids on the stairs, folks alone and in pairs; not a soul there he knew.
Won't you come out tonight? Take a turn on the floor.
So they spun him 'round a little,
Then he spun himself around a bit more.

Then the music grew dim; then they all disappeared.
He sat up with a start. Where's the music he hears?
Throws open the door; just a little new snow.
Fire in the fireplace; it must have started minutes ago.
Sun up in the trees. There ain't nobody there.
But there's rosin on the table, and he can't remember moving them chairs.
What a curious dream; what a wonderful night!
Well, the winter gets long, but he's got a new song,
And the moon is still bright.

LAST TRAIN FROM POOR VALLEY
Norman Blake

It was good one time
Everything was mighty fine
The coal tipple rolled day and night
And things they got slow
For reasons I don't know
And the chill winds they pulled into sight

The mine's all closed down
Everybody layin' around
There wasn't very much left to do
But to stand in that line
Get your rations strict on time
And woman I could see it killin' you

CHORUS: Now the soft new snow of December
Lightly falls my cabin round
Saw the last train from Poor Valley
Bringing brown-haired Becky Richmond bound

Been comin' all night long
Soon we'll be gone
Leavin' crossed your mind everyday
And then you said to me
"Things are bad back home you see"
I guess I'd better be on my way

I should hate you now
But I never could somehow
A miner's wife you were not cut out to be
It wasn't what you thought
Just some dreams you bought
When you left home and ran away with me

Saw the last train from Poor Valley
Bringing brown-haired Becky Richmond bound

JOE McCARTHY IS COMIN' TO TOWN

Folk Singer Joe Glazer wrote this parody about Senator McCarthy titled “Joe McCarthy is Comin’ to Town” (1951) sung to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”.

You’d better beware, you’d better be good,
You’d better do only the things that you should.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

He’ll call you a pink, he’ll call you a red,
He’ll drive every liberal thought from your head.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

He knows when you’re subversive, he knows each move you make;
His gumshoe boys are watching, so be good for McCarthy’s sake.

So you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
Don’t write and don’t join if you want to succeed.
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

If you’ve got a book whose cover is red,
When you start to read look under the bed,
Cause Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

If you go to church to pray or to wed,
You’d better make sure that the preacher’s not red,
Cause Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

Now if you are a teacher and you want to get ahead,
Don’t mention Thomas Jefferson, talk about Joe McCarthy instead.

So, you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
Don’t write and don’t join, if you want to succeed,
Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

Be careful who your friends are, be careful what you say.
Don’t be too controversial, or McCarthy will get you some day.

So, get rid of your brains and you’ll never go wrong,
You’ll always be safely sailing along,
When Joe McCarthy’s coming to town.

THE BLECKELL MURRYNEET

Or, "Blackwell Merry Night" in more standard dialect -- a "merry night" in the borders, especially Cumbria, being a big party at a public house. This one, in a song written by Robert Anderson (1770-1833), took place on "the last of December" 1802 or 1803.

6 Dec 1921, the Anglo-Irish treaty was signed. One war ended and another - the Irish Civil War - was soon to start. What songs would you recommend to mark the occasion? One that springs to mind for me is a relatively recent composition by Brian Moore (1946-2011)
THE BALLAD OF MICHAEL COLLINS   aka Hang Out Your Brightest Colours

Returning then to London town, who will take the blame?
The Treaty lies before him, Michael Collins adds his name.
There's a darker time upon the land, who will bear the load?
An awkward hero in an armoured car on an Irish country road.

Hang out your brightest colours and his memory now recall
For each one wants a part of him, no one wants it all

December 28, 1879: The bridge over the Tay at Dundee collapsed taking a passenger train down with it.

The event inspired a famous poem by Theodor Fontane and an infamous one by William McGonagall (see Mudcat thread), neither having been set to music as far as I know.

BALLAD OF THE TAY RAIL BRIDGE
by B Yellow

The station was so dark, so quiet and still,
There was nothing in the air, the air was bracing,
Christmas day had passed, he was coming home, your loved one.
And over the valleys people crying out loud,
A storm was on its way,
The memories of Christmas day flashed before your eyes,
When the truth came out.

As I noted in my 6 Dec message, that date marked the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty.
Another song for the occasion is THE IRISH FREE STATE by Patrick Galvin. It is the opening song in this video of a Treaty Songs programme at the (Irish) National Concert Hall, Dublin in Dec 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwGXdOtgeWY
There's also a new song by Duke Special about ERSKINE CHILDERS . I haven't watched the full programme yet, but hope there will be some other noteworthy songs. I'm just about to listen to Karan Casey sing two songs she has written about Kathleen Clarke.

/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170729 THE KINGSTOWN DISASTER
by Johnny McEvoy

recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4S96bsaiQ8

It was Christmas Eve in eighteen ninety-five
The biggest storm in years was blowing wild
Never had we seen it’s like before
As we drifted helpless towards the Kingstown shore

The wind was blowing like a wild banshee
Our ship was tossed upon the raging sea

Each man on board believed it was the end
We thought we’d never see our homes again
Suddenly there came a mighty sound
Our sails in shreds as they came tumbling down

How nobody died I’ll never know
As we ran aground upon the rocks below
We prayed to God to see us through the night
We had many hours to go before day-light

When suddenly we heard somebody call
“Stand fast me boys we’ll save you one and all

With burning eyes, we stared into the night
I must admit it was a wonderous sight
The Kingstown lifeboat drawing up abeam
Our eyes could not believe the sight we’d seen

Hold tight me boys we’ll throw to you a line
To tell the truth we haven’t got much time
The tide is turning fast before our eyes
We’ve got to get you off before sunrise

Then through the night there came a mighty roar
A towering wave of twenty feet or more
Came crashing down upon the men below
Such fear and terror you could never know

Splintered timbers scattered all around
Of those brave men there wasn’t sight nor sound
Capsized and smashed into a million parts
tnough to break a hardened sailor’s heart

Alex Williams was the cockswain’s name
His likes I know we’ll never see again
Fifteen men and boys were lost that night
Gone to their reward before daylight

Saint Stephen’s day they laid them in their grave
Wives and mothers prayed their souls to save
And we stood by just glad to be alive
That Christmas time in eighteen ninety-five.

HOMELESS WASSAIL by Ian Robb

"Wassail, wassail,all over the town,
Our cup is white and our ale is brown"
But huddled on the iron grate
we poor and hungry curse our fate.

This song was originated by
Finest Kind and has been covered by many others. See thread. It's very much in the tradition of older works:

THE DITCHLING CAROL

And all remember, gentles gay:
For you who bask in fortune's ray
The year is all a holiday.
The poor have only Christmas.

See
Mudcat, Mainly Norfolk, and YouTube search.

REMEMBER THE POOR [The Snow Is on the Ground]

Cold winter is come with its keen cutting breath,
And the birds is all dropped from the trees.
All nature seems touched at the finger of death,
And the streams are beginning to freeze.
When the hills and the dales are all covered in white
And Flora attends us no more,
When you sit by your fireside, reviving and hot,
Will you grumble to think on the poor?

Recorded by
Jeff Warner, Waterson:Carthy, and others. See Mudcat and Mainly Norfolk.

Is the premise from the beginning of the thread still valid? :

"The songs-of-the-month threads need one for December that does not include anything specifically about the solstice or midwinter holidays, those having their own."

@Reinhard: excellent question. It was me who proposed having a separate non-holiday thread, but Geoff's the one running the "months" project, so if he thinks separating them out isn't a good idea, he's no doubt right.

I think having one thread for Christmas and St Stephen's day songs (and maybe other holidays such as Chanukah and Kwanza) and one for other December songs (secular Dec songs?) was a good idea.

If Geoff doesn't mind the work, he could sub-divide the index by song type.

THE CUTTY WREN

26 December is sometimes called St Stephen's Day or Wren Day. The song is thought by some to represent the human sacrifice of the Year King, or the symbolic substitute slaughter of the wren as "king of the birds" at the end of the year for similar purposes, and such songs are traditionally sung on Boxing Day (26 December), just after the winter solstice.

THE PORT ADMIRAL

'Twas at the landing-place
    That's just below Mount Wyse,
Poll leaned against the sentry's box,
A tear in both her eyes,
Her apron twisted round her arms,
All for to keep them warm,
It being a windy Christmas Day,
    And also a snowstorm.

AYE FOND KISS by Robbie Burns
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=32222#422373

http://www.robertburns.org/works/358.shtml

"When Burns's affair with Mrs Agnes M'Lehose ('Clarinda') came to an end, and he settled down to married life with Jean Armour, he still retained a strong affection for 'Clarinda'. They met in Edinburgh for the last time on 6th December 1791. She was then about to set sail for Jamaica in the hope of achieving reconciliation with her husband (a hope that was not to be realized). On 27th December, Burns sent her 'Ae Fond Kiss' from Dumfries, a song so genuine in its resigned passion that it makes the drawing-room songs of 'sensibility' he had previously written for her seem artificial and insignificant. Sir Walter Scott thought that 'Ae Fond Kiss' contained the 'essence of a thousand love tales'."

as sung by Dougie MacLean

31 December 1720: Charles Edward Stuart – Bonnie Prince Charlie, the “Young Pretender” – was born in Rome. As leader of the Scottish Jacobites, he attempted to depose George II, but was finally defeated at Culloden.

THE BLACKBIRD The first broadside versions of this song date to 1650, obviously referring to Charles II, who was then in exile. It wasn't safe to refer to him by name, so the allegorical "blackbird" was used. It seems also to have been used of James II, and perhaps also to his son James III. However, the title came to be most strongly associated with Bonnie Prince Charlie.

After the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, the same situation arose as in 1650. It was generally not safe to speak of Charlie, so the Jacobites adopted various circumlocutions -- the "blackbird," the "moorhen," or simply "Somebody."

Moira Craig sang FLORA McDONALD’S LAMENT on her 2000 album On ae Bonny Day. She noted: The Steeleye Span version of this, PRINCE CHARLIE STUART, was one of the first songs I sang in public...it was only part of a Jacobite song Flora McDonald's Lament. It was found by John Moulden in the Kidson Collection in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, not far from where I first sang it.

BONNIE CHARLIE  aka WILL YE NO COME BACK AGAIN?, is a Scots poem by Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne), set to a traditional Scottish folk tune. Written well after the events it commemorates, it is not a genuine Jacobite song.

THE SKYE BOAT SONG tells the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart and grandson of James II and VII of Scotland) and his flight from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye, following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The words were written by an Englishman, Sir Harold Boulton, in the 1880s. He used a Gaelic song format, a rowing song called an iorram, and the tune is said to come from the Gaelic song Cuachan nan Craobh or The Cuckoo in the Grove.

EL DESEMBRE CONGELAT (Catalan)

El desembre congelat
confús es retira.
Abril, de flors coronat,
tot el món admira.
Quan en un jardí d'amor
neix una divina flor,
d'una ro, ro, ro,
d'una sa, sa, sa,
d'una ro, d'una sa,
d'una rosa bella,
fecunda i poncella.

El primer pare causà
la nit tenebrosa
que a tot el món ofuscà
la vista penosa;
mes, en una mitjanit,
brilla el sol que n'és eixit
d'una be, be, be,
d'una lla, lla, lla,
d'una be, d'una lla,
d'una bella aurora
que el cel enamora.

El mes de maig ha florit,
sense ser encara,
un lliri blanc tot polit
de fragància rara,
que per tot el món se sent,
de Llevant fins a Ponent,
tota sa, sa, sa,
tota dul, dul, dul,
tota sa, tota dul,
tota sa dulçura
i olor, amb ventura.

Arribaren els tres reis
amb molta alegria,
adorant el rei del cel
en una establia.
Oferint-li tres presents,
com són or, mirra i encens.
A la Ma, Ma, Ma,
a la re, re, re,
a la Ma, a la re,
a la Mare pia,
la Verge Maria.

Amb contentament i amor
celebrem el dia,
en què el diví Senyor
neix amb alegria.
Si no tenim més tresor
oferim-li nostre cor,
que és la gran, gran, gran
que és la fi, fi, fi
que és la gran, que és la fi,
que és la gran finesa
de nostra pobresa.

FROZEN DECEMBER

Frozen December,
Sorry, withdraws.
The whole world admires
April, crowned with flowers,
When in a garden of love
A divine flower is born,
Of a ro-, ro-, ro-,
Of a -se, -se, -se,
Of a ro-, of a -se,
Of a beautiful rose,
Fecund and virgin.

The first father caused
The dark night
That overshadowed the painful sight
Of the whole world;
But, one midnight,
The sun shines that came out
Of a beauti-, beauti-, beauti-,
Of a -ful, -ful, -ful,
Of a beauti-, of a -ful,
Of a beautiful dawn
That the sky falls in love with.

The month of May has blossomed,
Without being yet
A white lily all well groomed
With a rare fragrance,
That can be felt throughout the world,
From the East to the West,
All its, its, its,
All sweet-, sweet-, sweet-,
All its, all sweet-,
All its sweetness
And smell, hopefully.

The three kings arrived
With great joy,
Worshiping the king of heaven
In a cowshed
Offering him three presents,
Such as gold, myrrh, and frankincense.
To the Mo-, Mo-, Mo-,
To the -ther, -ther, -ther,
To the Mo-, to the -ther,
To the pious Mother,
the Virgin Mary.

With joy and love
Let's celebrate the day
In which the divine Lord
Was born with joy
If we have no other treasure
Let's give him our hearts,
Which is the great, great, great,
That's the re-, re-, re-
Which is the great, which is the re-,
Which is the great refinement
Of our poverty.

The songs of the bush would still be there next time...

2 December; On this day in 1814, the Marquis de Sade, the French aristocrat whose perverted lifestyle gave the word sadism to the language, died in an asylum.

The play by Peter Weiss titled The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, as performed by the inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade, or Marat/Sade for short, is a fictional account of Sade directing a play in Charenton, where he was confined for many years.

December 06, 1928 . The Banana Massacre was a massacre of United Fruit Company workers that occurred between December 5 and 6, 1928 in the town of Ciénaga near Santa Marta, Colombia. The event inspired Italian singer-songwriter Francesco De Gregori's song Ninetto e la colonia.

On the 4 December 1903, Ralph Vaughan Williams heard his first folk singer. He borrowed a bicycle and cycled from Brentwood to the home of Charles Potipher in near-by Ingrave. The first song Mr Potipher, standing on his doorstep, sang was BUSHES AND BRIARS. Lady Ursula Vaughan Williams said, "He felt it was something he had known all his life."

December 12th 1866 The Oaks Pit Explosion, the worst mining disaster in England, occurred near Stairfoot in Barnsley in the West Riding of Yorkshire killing 361 miners and rescuers.

THE OAKS PIT DISASTER Sung by Keith Tomlinson on the Yorkshire Garland site https://www.yorkshirefolksong.net/song.cfm?songID=130
To the Oaks Pit near Barnsley on the 12th of December
About four hundred colliers to work they did go,
In health and in strength upon that fatal morning,
Not thinking of danger they descended below.

The liner notes to Eileen McGann's recording of her song, SANDS, say, "Written on the beach, near midnight on New Year's Eve." There's a thread here, /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=130078 with the subject, RE: ADD: Sands (Eileen McGann). The thread contains the full lyrics.

THE TAILOR’S BRITCHES aka THE BRISK YOUNG TAILOR

A dance one New Year’s evening the tailor did attend;
I’m sure that he would ne’er have gone if he could have seen the end.

The Tailor's Britches sung by John Greaves on The Yorkshire Garland.
