If it's who I think it is, I'm just glad I wasn't there. The man never shuts UP! And his wife is just a PITA.

Consider adding Maple Syrup to the shakes, or maybe some vanilla.

A nice way of dealing with excess positivism is the old child question: How do you know?, repeated to the point where he runs out of information, false or otherwise. At some point, he either has to admit he does not know or get so ridiculous that he might as well admit to it. It's worth a laugh, anyway. "Why?" also works.

If he's a dear old friend and you'd hate to lose him, you might start your truth-speaking with something like this:

"You know, you're a dear old friend and I would hate to lose you, but I must warn you that I'm gonna throw a rod if you..."

Or you could just set the resident termagant on him, with Seamus supplying backup.

Love to all three of you!
Claire

Sometime with friends when they don't know what to say, will say things that drive us nuts. The next time tell him something like. Thanks if I wanted to be more upset and depressed I would simply turn on the TV and watch the news ... Friends make us laugh when we are sick, others don't know what to say and then spout out something that is crazy. One of mine came in after I had a pulmonary embolism and told me how I should be dead cause most don't live through them. Wow what a help, and went on and on ... another friend came in and I swear I laughed my way out of the hospital with all of his crazy stories. Needless to say I prefer the laugh cause they don't know what to do or say thinking they are helping.   Just correct him the next time with that wonderful humor you have to set him straight if he is a good friend who only gets on your nerves from time to time. He probably didn't mean to say anything to upset you, just is at a loss for words so he spouts out anything. I have been there captain

Better wait until Jacqui leaves for the UK otherwise we'll all be backhoed into the basement. Hard lemonade, right?
It may be hot where you are Tinker but here in Maine it hasn't broken 70 in weeks and the sun simply does not exist. Tin rooves in a thunderstorm - this could be interesting.

He is a dear old friend and I would hate to lose him. The best way to handle such things is to simply us "I" words instead of "You" words.
You piss me off when you do...there can only be one response, upping the ante.

I get pissed off when you say..... I have owned the problem. It's my problem, not his.

Naturally, being a man, my first response is "Go fry your ass you f*****g know it all"

"A boor is someone who takes away your solitude but provides no company"

He is Kendall's oldest friend, if it is who I think it is. Isn't his wife recovering from hip surgery? Cut him some slack, Captain. He probably hasn't gotten a word in edgewise since last Saturday.

Frail??? I see a contest in our future. I think we should start with the backhoe. Survivor gets to re-tin the roof...what do you think, Jacqui?

Nice thoughts guys, but this is a fella that, given the opportunity, will spout forth on ANY subject under the sun, including the state of his sex life. It's best not to get him started on anything.

He's a nice guy and very intelligent - just a bit short on commonsense in situations like this.

Expanding on Fortunato's thought, ask him if it's true that he recently visited the local womens' prison with a handful of blank pardons, and still didn't get laid.

Well, how much do you REALLY like the guy? If you do actually like him, gently correct him (a 2x4 generally works pretty well, or a bullet an inch from his right ear). If you really don't care for him, crabpots need bait. If you don't give a shit one way or the other, agree with him and see if he'll give you money.

An old friend came to visit me today and it should have been obvious to anyone that I didn't care what he did with the shavings of a stump or half a dozen other things that dont amount to a cane hole in a cow flap. This guy is a Leo and of course, it's all about him.
When I didn't respond he suggested that I'm FRAIL!!
I will have to square him away, but I know he will never admit being wrong. I've known him for over 50 years and I've never heard him admit being wrong about anything. He often shoots from the hip with nowhere near enough information to speak about the problem at hand. When it became obvious that I was not interested, he left.

Reminded me of John Wayne in the film Hondo. His advice to a young man, "Never apologize; it's a sign of weakness." To me, it's a sign of insecurity in someone who knows he's full of shit but can't face it.He often gets up my nose, but this time he went to far.

He's the frail one and I have to figure out how to shoot him down without killing him. Any ideas?

See? That protein powder Spaw mentioned is so powerful it got Kendall to eat even without consuming the admittedly non-delicious-but-nutritious stuff.

I have more steak in the fridge for tomorrow night..............

Jacqui: one of my favs is: melted cheese in an iron fry pan, quickly add and scramble in eggs, when eggs are cooked satisfactorily, add applesauce. Use your own amounts. It's Swiss.

Everybody says "WHAT!" Go suffer! I looked askance when my friend cooked it 20 plus years ago but....

Tongue with Mustard-Horseradish Sauce Recipe
Posted by danky in Recipes on 01 4th, 2009 | no responses
Active time: 30 min Start to finish: 3 1/2 hr

Serves 6.

INGREDIENTS
for tongue
1(3‚-lb) fresh beef tongue
1large onion, sliced
6garlic cloves, smashed
1bay leaf
1whole star anise
1/2teaspoon black peppercorns
2tablespoons salt
for sauce
1/4cup chopped shallot (1 large)
2tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4cup heavy cream
2tablespoons whole-grain dijon mustard
1tablespoon bottled horseradish
1tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1tablespoon chopped fresh dill
1/2teaspoon fresh lemon juice

DIRECTIONS
Cook tongue: Rinse tongue well with cold water and place in a deep 6- to 8-quart pot. Add cold water to cover by 3 inches, then add remaining tongue ingredients. Cover pot and bring to a boil. Simmer, partially covered, until tongue isfork-tender, 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Transfer tongue to a cutting board (reserve 1‚ cups cooking liquid) and, when cool enough to handle, peel off skin and trim any fat or gristle. Skim off fat from cooking liquid and pour liquid through a paper-towel–lined sieve into a large bowl, discarding solids. Keep tongue warm, covered.

Make sauce: Cook shallot in butter in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring frequently, until softened. Whisk in flour and cook, whisking,1 minute. Gradually whisk in reserved cooking liquid and cream, then bring to a boil, whisking.

Simmer sauce, whisking, until slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Whisk in mustard, horseradish, herbs, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.

Slice tongue and serve with sauce.

Nobody ever listens to me but............

Go get some whey protein supplement powder in the chocolate flavor. Recommended after bariactric surgery because they don't get enough protein. Kendall isn't either. If all you can get down are shakes and smoothies, then this is the way (whey) to go. You need to maximize the value of what you're drinking. Also used by many chemo and cancer patients to get the nutritional values they need.

Frankly, the best price is at Walmart but its available through health food stores and many grocery and pharmacy stores as well.

Spaw

HMMMMM Kendall, I can see a way to make a profit out of this. We call it The Captain Kendall Diet (or Kaptain Kendall to make it more catchy). Then hire Kirstie Allie to be spokesperson. Don't worry about paying her. The deal will be $50 for every popund lost and still not regained two years later. You don't want to make the same mistake that Jennie Craig made.
Now...this is critical. Jacqui has to develop some new flavors. Bananas, even the smell of bananas, grosses me out. How about Cream Cheese and Chive Or Potato Chip flavor?
The Chocolate Ice Cream and Milk Shake Diet...what do you think?
Do you have any before and after photos to share? We'll some sort of "proof".

Right now one of Kendall's main sources of nutrition is mega milk shakes. Full fat milk, three scoops of chocolate ice cream and a banana is the norm. He can swallow these and enjoy them, so he takes in more.

I discussed this with his doctor the other day and he said OK right now - we'll deal with any sugar and fat issues once he's better. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
