I don't happen to think Kendall's such bad news...

(Waiting with you. And know what I did the night before your doctor contacted you with the potentially better news? I prayed. So there.)

Kendall, I was playing your CD in the car yesterday as I drove a young neighbor to her train. After about 1/2 hour of sitting quietly and listening to "Mrs Ravoon" and all, she turned to me and said "You know? You have some very peculiar friends."

Here's to peculiarity.

Claire

For some reason, I have a hard time wearing a bracelet or a wrist watch. They irritate my skin. However, Jacqui volunteered to wear the one you made for me, Don, so I can admire the workmanship without the irritation.
Now, the wedding ring you made for me is ok, no irritation at all.

Do you know what a wedding ring and a tourniquet have in common?

They both cut off circulation.

I'm glad to read that you don't need my help on this Captain. My record with goodluck bracelets has been mixed. About 50/50. But I have one with your name on it if you decide you need it. They are good looking bracelets in of themselves so maybe you need one to improve your already adequate looks. Then again maybe you don't.

Anyway, The news is good and I am pleased. Let me know if I can be a help.

Hey, Kendall,
Just saw this thread, read your early posts and felt devastated and pissed at the unfairness of it all. Then I was delighted to read your more recent news from your wonderful doc. Haven't read through the whole thread, but I see now we're up to confessing childhood crimes. I'd say that's a great sign. ; )

Hope you can kick out this latest demon in short order.

Remember that when you eat garlic every day before going to sleep, you will be prepared to greet the angel of Death. When he taps you on the shoulder, simply turn toward him and say "Yes?"

Kendall,
Sure is good to hear the latest better news you folks got. In '97 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Slow growing. Opted to watch and wait with periodic PSA tests.---Result: No sign of it at all -- in the last 12 years. I'm with Dan on this. Go with the flow. Be a realist. Like Art Buchwald, eat whatever you want to eat. Enjoy the time. If not for that commodity, we'd have to do everything all at once! ;-)

Love to you and Jacqui,

Art & Carol

Janie: lecture on integrity well done. Sounds like the same Q school, however, from which my son graduated in '81. Hand knit sweater and backgammon set gone.

Kendall: I understood there is clear evidence that prayer works. So does a positive attitude and you surely have that. And with all these friends...!!!

I am considered a bit of a joke at work because I don't accept the concept of "found" when it comes to wallets, jewelry, and expensive electronics.
The norm appears to be finders keepers... Maybe I have lost or had stolen too much not to feel the loser's pain. I don't understand how anyone could sleep at night after finding a diamond ring and turning it into a gift. But I guess I am old.

We are talking about lessons in integrty, here. (Boy Kendall, has this thread morphed - but not unrelated - one of the reasons you are so beloved is because of your integrity.)

Thing is, integrity is multifaceted, and it seems to me, is no longer the norm. Because it is no longer taught within the context of the greater society. Cash register honesty is important, but it is a small piece of a much bigger pie. These days, what is legal is considered to be integrity, but integrity goes well beyond what is legal. Business values that posit that the only loyalty is to the stockholder or corporation lack integrity, even if the corporation stays within the letter of the law.

Remember when it was considered bad sportsmanship to boo the opposing team? Remember when you were in high school and technical fouls would be called if the crowd behaved badly to distract a basketball player at the foul line? IMO, those were lessons in integrity. Integrity engenders respect for others and the efforts of others, as well as moral respect for the self.

Remember when a kid would actually tell on other kids who were drinking, smoking, stealing from other kids or teachers? It might have pissed some kids off, but it was generally accepted that the kid who told did the right thing, and they were not likely to be completely ostrasized or beat up in the alley because of it (at least in many places.)

Teaching integrity, because it was broadly defined and understood, was not such a hard task for my parents. I'm finding with my own son that I do not have the support of the general mores of society to teach him. That is what Deborah and others are encountering when the store says "nevermind." My guess is the store is so shocked that a parent is holding a kid accountable that they see that as the point, not recognizing that they also need to hold the child accountable, by offering some sterness and then forgiveness, instead of just "that's OK."

My son has had two i-pods taken at school after he carelessly left them in the library or classroom, and his lunch gets taken at frequent intervals. He simply accepts this. Kid's attitudes are "finders-keepers." No effort to figure out who left the equipment and return it to them. He recently found a PSP at school and was going to keep it, consistent with what his peers do. When I say it I asked where it came from. We had a heart-to-heart, and he decided he needed to put up posters saying he had found a PSP. It was soon returned to it's rightful owner. Curiously, after that, one of the I-Pods he had lost was returned to him by another student who decided after three months that maybe it wasn't just "found."

It is a mystery to me that parents do not notice, or do not inquire when their kids suddenly have these small but expensive electronic devices. Why do they not insist the kid make an effort to return the device to the student who carelessly left it somewhere at school? (Disclaimer- my son attends a small, Quaker school with less than 160 students attending the upper school [9-12])

When I was a kid, I prayed every night for God to bring me a bike, but he didn't.
Then I realized that God doesn't work that way.

So I stole one and asked him for forgiveness...

(I stole that bit from Emo Philips).

when my eldest daughter was about 11 we lived in England and we let her and her friends go off to Guildford on the train. We were about half an hour away. When they got back it was clear to me that something had happened.....thye had stolen make up from Body Shop. I called all the mums involved and told them what had happened anx drove penny back to Guilford to the store and the manager said ....IT DOESN'T MATTER .....! I looked at her and said it certainly does matter and pointed out she had the right to call the police -- my daughter went white = gave back the makeup and never stole again - to my knowledge

I never filched anything from a store- one of the things my mother got firmly across to her kids: Don't touch that - it's not yours.

When my daughter was four and "safely" out of the store, she opened her pocket wide to me and said proudly: See? Inside was nestled a canday bar.

I first explained the crime then took her inside to tell the clerk what she had done and promise never to do it again. She didn't cry but she was a bit pale around the gills. She has since said it made a great impression on her.

But sometimes the store's reaction is counter productive, I think. When my nephew was four he picked up and pocketed an apple from a display outside. I saw it and followed the same procedure I had used with my daughter.

But the grocer said, Oh, that's all right, Mama. He can keep it.

Our character is shaped as much by our mistakes and failures as it is by accomplishments. Those peas were important to you because you remembered that from childhood with regret, making you a strong and honest man.

Oh I agree.

I took a pack of Wrigley's gum (yellow pack) from local store when I was about 6 years old. My mom marched me back to the store and made me own up to what I'd done. I was terrified.

And I did the same thing to my son when he did pocketed one caramel from Brach's pick and mix counter.

Was that terrible? No. I think both events added to my understanding of childhood experiences and lessons and the ability to forgive myself.

When I was a boy I stole a handful of peas from a neighbor's garden. That has bothered me ever since.

And a boy is still a child. Would you not forgive your own child for such an indiscretion?

We must all learn to forgive the sins of our own youth.
