Subject: RE: BS: Europe Bans Seal Products From: alanabit Date: 28 Jul 09 - 05:08 AM I think there are two problems to be addressed here. In Europe, we do not want to have anything to do with the seal hunt. For the indigenous peoples of Canada, the seal hunt is part of their tradition, but in a modern economy, they need to produce an economic surplus to trade for other things they need. The challenge will be to find something of which they can produce a surplus. It may not need to be a raw material. This is like a lot of moral issues, neither black or white. There is a complex balance of sensibilities to be taken into account, all of which must be respected. |

Subject: RE: BS: Europe Bans Seal Products From: Lox Date: 27 Jul 09 - 08:26 PM Tough one ... ... if you stop the cocaine trade you affect the livelihoods of poor farmers in colombia who really need the cash and don't get paid anything like the street value ... ... lots of parallels there really ... |
Subject: BS: Europe Bans Seal Products From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 27 Jul 09 - 08:16 PM As you may have heard, Europe voted to ban seal products due to tens of thousands of letters asking them to do so. The Canadian government is trying to appeal this decision. A University of Guelph (Ontario) professor says that it won't hurt Canada's economy; yet many communities especially in Nunavut and Newfoundland who depend on the seal hunt will be left out of work. What do you think of this? |
