How did his face look when He was assailed by temptation to do the wrong thing? How was His expression changed when he was betrayed by his friends and seemingly by His Father? What about the look of fear when he contemplated His crucifixion and death.How was his face changed after the incredible agony of that barbaric act?
After the resurection, His closest friends did not know His face when they encountered Him and yet recognised the man.

Just to be pleasant and pass the time (rather than challenging what you said to be argumentative -- I mean this nicely), so why have they discovered the remains of bronze age mirrors and cosmetics? Didn't the people from around the first period comment on Caesar's noble Roman nose and his receding hairline? Weren't a number of Roman Senators tormented for being fat? What about what was said of Cleopatra's beauty and the recipes she used for her cosmetics (not to mention Helen of Troy and all that that started)? :-D

This obsession with what people look like is a fairly modern one. It wasn't so in ancient times. That's why we don't have tons of detailed descriptions or portraits (apart from Roman coins, which were all a standardized look anyway) of people's appearances from back then. It just wasn't considered important. I wonder why it became so?

Well, Martin, he's never complained, or even made another squeak about it since. So I'm not guilting myself out about it, by any means. However, I've never yet heard anyone complain about being left "as is" either.

The Africans used to wait until puberty before circumcising boys. YOOOWWWWWCH .....

But back to what Jesus really looks like, I like what Mother Teresa (sorry, I guess that's Blessed Mother Teresa now) said when asked how she could continue to do the work she did with the diseased and dying on the streets of Calcutta --

What I don't know is why your fingers are sore but can only guess it's because where you have them stuck up something.

Pied Piper, I don't really think of Jews as a race but you yourself did admit that your Jewish friends look Jewish. I am merely pointing out that no other religion has people that "look" their religion. My background is Askenazie, fyi. Actually studies that I have read have indicated that Sefardim or even Ethiopian Jews have similiar bloodline traits and characteristics as their Eastern European counterparts.

Daylia: Good thing you had him circumcised. a little pain has to be worth a lifetime of cleaning foul smelling smegma from under that foreskin, natural or not. Nature intended people to die of many things. Isn't it great that common sense and modern medicine can derail nature?

I have found that even in the well educated very upper middle class suburbia that I now live and work (didn't always, was an inner city dweller and worker for over 2 decades), most non-Jews know very little about Jews in general. Part of that is the fault of Jews who do not open up and try to educate others. But with anti-semitism again reaching high levels, I can't say that I blame many for keeping a lower profile.

But Martin, I have known Jews of European descent who were not converts, and who were very Gentile-looking. I went to school with several who were blond and blue-eyed. So no, I don't think all Jews look alike.

But I also don't think Jesus looked like a European, simply because he WASN'T European. And I think his deeds are more important than what he looked like.

I brought my firstborn back to the hospital to be circumcised at 10 days old ... (family "tradition", and I was under the impression it was more hygenic at the time). They wouldn't let me stay with him, sent me out for a coffee instead. Well, you could hear that child screaming from the cafeteria, on the opposite side of the building. It was awful.

No pain? Yeah, right. What, babies don't have nerve endings?

If I had to do it all again, I'da left him exactly the way Nature intended. It might have taken an extra 10 seconds to clean him up ... so what?

I too think mutilating babies for religious (or any other) reasons should be illegal.
Martin are your ancestors Ashkenazim or Sefardim.
A study of blood groups in these two branches showed that the Ahkenarazim had more similarities with non-Jewish Eastern Europeans than with the Sefardim.
I agree with you that the Jewish people I know do look Jewish (they're all Ashkenazim) but I think we should not conclude that Jewish people are a "race", any more than white or black skinned people are a "race"

BTW, in my opinion circumcision of males or females is genital mutilation and child abuse, and I am sorry that at the time I was born doctor's routinely circumcised boys as a 'precautionary hygenic practice'. Truth is it was a billable surgical procedure that added a couple of hundred more dollars to what was a normal delivery fee. It made it worth a bit more for the doctor to show up, kept him in golf balls, paid for his vacations, etc. Should never have been allowed. Should not be allowed now. Those arguments that babies don't feel pain are ridiculous.

I was given to believe that most of the people in this region of the Middle East, Jewish or not, are semitic with a common heritage if you go back far enough. Technically there's no such thing as an anti-Semitic Palestinian for obvious reasons.

Abraham was from Ur with was located in what is now Iraq. Saying he was an Iraqi is the same as claiming an 18th century Spanish Governor of Tejas was a Texan or from the US.

As for that, most Arabs hold that their people descended from Ishmael, Abraham's first son. Mohamed declared both Jews and Christians to be "people of the book" and forbade causing them harm. It's the reason no one can declare a jihad against Israel -- the Arabs consider the Jews family. Until the crusades, Arabs and Jews lived in peace. The Frankish knights changed all that and in a way started what is a basically family dispute that exists in Israel today. It certainly set the wrong foundation for our problems in the region.

BTW, I'm pretty comfortable with the reconstruction of Jesus. I was kinda hoping "The Passion" would avoid the blue eyed thing.

Judea used be a state, hence the name. The people were not the same as those in the other part of what we now call Israel. In fact, the early history would leave little doubt that the two hated each other so bad they could hardly agree to anything.

Jews have definitive features that help me recognize others of my faith. I have often found this interesting as Judiasm is not a race, per se, but there are traits I will not deny that Jews do have. Most Jews know this and we can be in a room full of people and spot other Jews usually quite quickly. In no way am I ashamed of this or embarrassed by this. There is a common gene between us. I have even heard of Jewish only diseases much the same as there have been diseases of other races such as sickle cell anemia. I don't think there is any other religion or faith that has physical traits amonst it's people.

I see none of those in how Jesus is portrayed. He is the most gentile looking Jew I have ever seen in every church portrayl.

There's a documentary about this one. They claim he looked like a Jewish person with a broad skull - similar to those found in burial sites of the period - and stated that these people would have looked like modern people of Israel.

"Female circumsion" isn't circumsion in the traditional meaning of the word -- cutting away the foreskin.

January 1 used to be the Feast of the Circumsion, but the Catholic Church changed it to something else. I understand that several churches in Europe have Jesus of Nazareth's foreskin in their reliquaries.

Daylia, if it's any help (or even if it isn't) I would point out that Venus rhymes with "penis"--which is all well and good--but that Jesus is not really a good rhyme because the preceding accented syllable is wrong. Yes, I suppose in a song or poem one could get by with that as a rhyme, but it wouldn't really be satisfactory. Your soul is saved now.
