Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Beer Date: 06 Mar 11 - 10:52 PM This is becoming a real pain. Kat, you started this thread and i love it. Have seen some great recommended flicks by it. Any chance of starting a "Thread two" on your topic? The waiting time for the thread to download for some must be coming a real pain. Me as well. Neil D. Just watched your recommended movie "Winter's Bone". Right on. Brought tears and memories of hard times. Totally hated it and love it as well. Thank you. ad. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Neil D Date: 05 Mar 11 - 02:06 AM Winter's Bone was amazing. We had a thread open about this indie masterpiece last year and I'm surprised it didn't get refreshed since it was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture. One of the finest examples ever of how to tell a gripping story on film on a low budget, of how to achieve suspense and intensity without CGI and blowing stuff up. The breakout performance of it's 20 year old star, Jenifer Lawrence, was simply stunning. Some pretty cool authentic mountain music as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 28 Feb 11 - 11:12 AM Watched 'Pelle the Conqueror' last night. Been meaning to for ages, but noticed Sofie Gråbøl ('The Killing') was in it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 28 Feb 11 - 07:17 AM Some films are better to be seen in black and white, it can add to the mood of the times that it was made in (depressed, broke or both!). Some of the Fred Astaire/Ginger Roger films in b&w look so classy and the Beatles Hard Days Night can only be in b&w. The change from black and white to technicolour worked really well in the Wizard of Oz but that was a fantasy film anyway. I don't think it works so well when it's attempted today not sure why that it is. Mel Brooks had a success with the Young Frankenstein the subject based on old Hammer type horror was going to make it more likely to be a success anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: kendall Date: 27 Feb 11 - 08:08 PM I saw SHALL WE DANCE on the coach from Boston yesterday, and although it is not my kind of film, in places it is very funny. I'd bet most women would love it. Richard Gere was the star. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Max Johnson Date: 26 Feb 11 - 12:28 PM I think the film I've most enjoyed on TV, ever, is part 1 of Edgar Reitz' 'Heimat' trilogy (Part 1 is serialised, and subtitled 'A Chronicle Of Germany'). It first appeared in the UK in London in 1984 as a 10 hour movie(!) It's a masterpiece. A movie that I saw again a short while ago is 'Pleasantville'. A good film, but check out Fiona Apple's version of 'Across the Universe' on the soundtrack. Favourite film and Soundtrack is 'Barry Lyndon'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: jacqui.c Date: 11 Feb 11 - 08:37 AM We went to see The King's Speech the other day. I think that this was one of the best movies that I have seen in many years. The story was spellbinding and the acting sublime. Kendall said that he wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. If this film doesn't sweep the Oscars there ain't no justice. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST,Blind DRunk in Blind River Date: 24 Jan 11 - 11:03 AM Yeah, well, we all got our tastes, eh? I would watch black and white movies if ya payed me to, I guess... But otherwise no way, eh? Get real! The real weerd thing is that the world useta BE in black and white and that is why all them old movies look that way. It hadda do with some kind of shift that happened or somethin' but people in them old times just hadda put up with everything bein' in black and white or shades of grey. The thing I can't figger is why there was racial trouble back then, eh? It don't really make no sense? Anyways, along about the 19-flippin'-50s sometime colour started comin' in in bits and patches...here and there...you hadda be in the right place to catch it, eh? I think there was even a few insidents in the 40's of color but they was rare. So by aobut 1960 there was colour almost everywhere and black and white movies natcherally ended by then. We now live in a world of total colour! Nature is weerd, eh? People preetend like they undetrstand this stuff, but they are foolin' thems3elves. Them paintings you see of Romans and Jesus in colour are not right. They been colorzied after the fact. - Shane |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Jan 11 - 12:01 PM Recently, I enjoyed True Grit, and The Fighter, both primarily because of some fine acting turns by Christian Bale in The Fighter and Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit. True Grit has to be the ultimate exercise in the Coen Brothers' penchant for articulate but inappropriate dialogue. Since Raising Arizona, where all of the characters speak in a sort of rustic amalgamation of Shakespeare and Mark Twain, I have looked forward to more. In the original True Grit, I really liked the formal way the characters spoke, a reflection of the sort of rather stilted diction that can be witnessed in contemporary newspapers of the old west. In the Coen Brothers' version, the argument between Steinfeld and the Stable owner is destined to be a classic scene. Jeff Bridges also has some great lines, but he grunts and growls so many of them that it gets a little frustrating trying to decipher. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: GUEST Date: 19 Jan 11 - 08:41 AM "Starship Troopers" Just watched it again for the first time since it's 1997 cinema release.... .. and this loud lurid exciting blood splattered comic book political satire still remains the greatest ever of the big overblown popcorn CGI space sci fi romps. Paul Verhoeven's most inspired big budget 'American' movie, and his wicked subversive European sense of humour gleefully exploits all the best and worst cliches from the post war abundance of hollywood military battle movies. The sequence paying homage to "Zulu" is a special bonus for any big kid of a 'certain' age... In 1997 this was the first truly 'convincing' high quality CGI FX movie and nearly 15 years older, it still looks fresh and spectacularly superior to current mundane conformist formulaic 'epic' movie productions. |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Bonzo3legs Date: 19 Jan 11 - 08:05 AM Superb acting from Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush in The King's Speech - all in all a wonderful film. The more films about royalty the better!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Jim Carroll Date: 19 Jan 11 - 07:53 AM "The King's Speech" Thanks for the recommendation - off to see it tomorrow. Wasn't going to bother (due to my contempt for royalty), but one that comes as highly recommended and award-nominated can't be too bad. Saw Kite Runner for the second time last week - still excellent, and left me wondering if 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' will ever be filmed. Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: katlaughing Date: 13 Jan 11 - 03:28 AM I thought Ondine was really beautiful, too. Just watched two Swedish films: As It Is In Heaven..very special and the music was wonderful. Exquisitely beautiful film, imo. And, the first one of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I had to fast forward through one very violent rape scene, but on a whole it very well done and fascinating. I've also been watching a Japanese series from netflix called Baian - the Assassin starring Ken Wantanebe as a daytime acupuncturist, night-time assassin. Very classic, well done. |

Subject: RE: BS: Seen any good movies lately? From: Charmion Date: 03 Jan 11 - 11:36 AM Edmund downloaded "Valhalla Rising" one evening while I was out, but couldn't sit through it. "True Grit" is, indeed, excellent. After the sterling performances by Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, I was most impressed by the use of the first strains of "Talk About Suffering" as a theme tune. Until his last couple of films, John Wayne always played the same character. Jeff Bridges, on the other hand, can actually act -- and so can Matt Damon, unlike Glen Campbell, who was cast as LaBoeuf in the 1969 version of "True Grit." According to Answers.com, the line "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" is uttered by Fred MacMurray in "The Rains of Ranchipur." |
