I'd have thought that anything by Shepherd Neame (with the possible exception of Canterbury Jack!) would be good.

Porter would get my vote, and it's suitable for the season, although it may have minority appeal.

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug!

And back to the subject matter of the thread.

No dropouts et? Anymore subscribers?

Landlord will this week be bringing me the list of what he can get from Sheps in the way of proper beer to put on the counter in a big box - will a big box be enough?   It depens on numbers... Preferences? I don't much like MasterBrew, nor indeed Shitfire (which is too strong for a session beer too)

Landlady has offered to do us a casserole or stew or something too (I expect with bread dippies), so again numbers are important.

You know you will be stir-crazy after Xmas!

Oh, yes, Romany man, Treacle and Obvious are welcome, the landlord will put his staffie bitch upstairs.

I'm worried about Trev... he asked me to cut up a carrot and put it in the fridge so he could eat some when he fancied a cigarette. He's not had a "virtual fag"... or has he.... whilst he hasn't touched the carrot, he sits chewing the end of a match... no, not the head. Song is being written. I will suggest the mandola idea. Thanks RB.... loved the sheep beauty contests on the Knockholt thread!

Sue I am sure part of Trevors healing process will be music, fags i am sure he will overcome with your help, perhaps he could emulate Cohen and become a monk, then write lots of songs.
Whatever he chooses we wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Are you allowed to pick up the guitar and put it on his lap while he sits on the sofa?

Or maye he can use the mandola instead - it's a lot smaller and lighter?

WOOT for Trevor!!! WOOT for Sue looking after him!

Really? He cannot pick up a guitar for a month? What can we do to help him through the boredom?

How about surfing You Tube for blues and folk?   Maybe write another parody or two? No pressure Trev.

I am sure no one will make a Cue at a Heart Attack Sue. There,is Jesting and messing about Like Ferrets and dogs and banter but this is different.

My Grandfather had a MILD Heart Attack back in 1988 and it killed him out right . Its good news. Trevors is very lucky. Look after him.

Trev coming home in surprisingly rude health tomorrow. He now has a healthy glow rather than the somewhat pale complexion. I have a feeling that this has been brewing for years (possibly since childhood). Glad he's coming home. He'll be with me full time for at least a month. No fags, no driving, and he can't pick up a guitar. Cue for some unkind person.....

Sorry to hear that Mrs Leopard, give the old bugger my fondest best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Mr Hat sir, dont even THINK of walking. That road aint for walkers unless they have suicidal tendencies. Its bad enough driving on it.
Buses are rather more frequent than Herr Bridge seems to realise, but not frequent enough to be a viable option. Last I heard it was a 2hourly service - last one back about 10:30pm. Every other day it runs to a Sunday timetable. Folks out there need the religeon, you know.
I am positive that some poor fool (try DeadHorse) would be willing to pick you up from St Roods Station, (or Catam / Row Chester) but check nearer the day, as my social secretary is apt to wisk me off to sundry other events at very little notice.

Pubic transport to Lower Coke is not. I think there might be a bus once a fortnight from Catam (the home of the catamites) bus station, and Catam bus station is not too far from Catam train station. But I suspect it does not on Sundays, nor take you home again. The bus might be a number 136. Dead Horse might know.

It is not walkable. It is over another 7 miles from Upnor.

I told you to buy a 2nd hand mando. Brian Rodgers from Walderslade will be able to fix it.

I may just has well have asked the "Ferrets" for direction ?

I have purchased a brand spanking new Boston flatback Mandolin and had now,t but trouble with it. The E string keeps breaking. Its broke in the shop when the chap tuned it and he restrung it and it was fine.

By the time I got to Crayford it was outa tune because I had been learning two fingered chords all night on new strings so a friend tuned it for me and woo and behold it broke again. so I did not play Mandolin at Crayford at all.
I fear I may have to take the plate off and file down the string loop hooks? Or shall I wait for a Mandolin Knockholt workshop or give it to the ferrets to sort out? Second hand ?brand new Problems Problems Problems,

I will be there if I can get there. How far from nearest Station?
                                    What is the nearest station?
and can I walk it from the nearest Station to the Pub in question?

I do not mind a walk I can have a little smoke on the way and enjoy the countryside like I did from Strood to Upnor and its nice to have a pint having walked a thirst because you can drown it in one and by the time the landlady?lord comes back with your change you can ask for another and then take in the faces of disbelief at the same time.

Romany Man, perhaps you could start a ferret farm and get some EU funding....private training ferrets to remove minks. and of course under H&S laws ferrets need a lot of space at least 100 sq yds per ferret.

Lower Stoke may be worth a look - big detached house in half an acre about £250k - maybe less with recession on.

Snerk! I gather DH is commenting upon RB's digs as well as its position.

I did live way out in BFE (bum fuk egypt aka Fluvanna County Virginia) once upon a time and absolutely loved it. Being stranded for days due to blizards, ice storms, floods, power outages, COWS!. Was lovely. We had two fireplaces and a woodstove so made it nice and cozy save for the 3 bored children and one spawn of satan (now ex) spouse.

I figured we could not afford a little house out in the boondocks in the UK. Thought they were considered prime real estate. I would be willing to risk life and limb (everyone else's included) and Chris' sanity and learn to drive in UK for a house out in the country. Then we would not need to be within walking distance of pub. Chris could drink and I will drive. Actually I was quite a good driver in US, if bit of a speed demon. I just hate how narrow the roads are here.

Where was I???? Ummm How did I get here? Sorry, neuron derailment. I would also love Watts Avenue, but sure we cannot afford it.

oh expired equine is so negative, probably comes from political bias and leanings toward disposing of those with a different way of life, needs, social standing, (see travelling laws and stopping rights) sadly kent is slowly being concreted over, up here on the edges, 10 mins to dartford tunnel, only a small area is now left to green space, seeda plans show concrete all along the thames and medway corridor to dover from london, however there are some lovely places, sadly only those with buckets of cash can afford them, i have been trying for six years to get a place for me trailer and horses all to no avail, should i get loadsa money i would have no prob giving the right man the custoary back hander and be in straight away, my advice is keep looking, we all have different views on where is nice and we could be happy, me id be happy in the field at knockholt, mud and all.

You could always find some place WAY out in the sticks where no sane person would venture to go,
right next door to two pubs that are magnets for the socially and mentally deprived.
Then you could invite all your favourite folkies round once in a while to view the Asbo's waiting
on street corners/derelict bus shelters/car parks etc.
You could make the offer seem more attractive by providing sleeping space on floor and supplying
the obligatory minced meat & pasta stew for overnighters.
Wait, this all sounds so familiar.
Where have I heard all this before..........
It'll come to me in time :-)

The only pub matching the requirement is the Good Intent. Alas it is in Troytown. The nearest human life is out of town from the King's School, or behind the Watts Almshouses - an area of outstanding natural property values. But I think there may be some small squares in that area with unrestored houses that might fit your bill (probably no trees).

Try Ridley Road, The Close, Watts Ave, Roebuck Rd, King Edward Rd, Ahbert Rd, Albany Rd, Baker St. I thnk most of the houses will be too big. The cloisters, love lane, etc are nice but very dear.

Don't take Dead Horse seriously, there is no nice part of Strood. There are also no folk sessions in Strood.

How about Lower Rainham? I think there are still some sessions there.

Uurrgghhh! £400,000?    We have seen some in Rochester and Strood that are affordable.

Mr. Bridge... you are hired!

How about stumbling home distance from pub with at least twice a month folk sessions? That is first and foremost requisite. Largish lounge same for kitchen/diner (enough room to entertain at least 4 extra people). Minimum 2 bedrooms with bath on same floor as bedroom. Loft or cellar we can finish for the train set (for Chris) and craft studio (for me). In fact we don't mind doing up out of date bath, kitchen, general decor so long as not too expensive. Tiny bit of garden with at least one mature tree and parking for one car and small caravan. BTW we love church bells.

Uhhmmm! What is your fee?

Anyway thanks for the encouragement DH. I am sure when the time comes we will find something safe, lovely and affordable. We will keep checking things out in the mean time and gleaning everyone's knowledge, though I think we have already had all of RB's.

It depends on your budget. If you can afford £400,000 upwards Shorne has its charm.

Rochester, best cobmination of charm peace and price, probably WELL out on Maidstone Road Rochester (NOT Maidstone Road Chatham)

You could try Lower Higham, right out beyond the Chequers pub towards the Thames.

Or Lower Coke, lots of bangs per buck - but check the address with me first.

Have you spent much time in Oban - last time I was there it was full of scousers kicking over dustbins for fun (and education)?

Do you need to be urban for transport?

Further down the North Kent line are some good bargains - beyond Faversham.

Or maybe Wouldham etc? I think Burham is dearer.

Regrettably the nicer places to live cost more.

Nice and warm - West country. I think Totnes is still a time warp living in the 70s.

Mid-Wales (if you like rain)?

Deal?

I think Mr Curmudgeon Bridge is describing the entire country in miniature.
There are good places and there are bad places, all within a few streets of each other.
I live in a nice part of Strood, but the bad part is just a couple of streets away.
Keep visiting and you will soon find awhich is which.
Sorry to hear about your Rectal Adhesion. Quite rare in yanks, but all too common in the Scots I hear. Well known as "tight arses".
As for the SADS, it has become an English trait,(see Mr Bridge) and you will soon find yourself fitting in anywhere.
Anywhere that cricket, football or international tennis is played at any rate.

The official site near Gravesend has been full for decades. I knew a horse gentler who lived opposite for a while and in fact a chap had a mare with twin foals and she needed more grass and I offered him my garden in Higham but the fencing was not practical to arrange.

That'll be because it's full of prison officers and ex-prison officers, being next door to the nick, and you may find their politics - well - a fraction retributive.

It's also about a stone's throw from (a)the M2 (within droning hearing) and (b) a truly amazing Chatham urban estate

Parts of Rochester are very pricey (mostly the parts with the nice buildings of which there are quite a lot) but you need to like cathedral bells! Regrettably it has a conservative club.

The parts anywhere near Aaron Stone's nightclub and casino are dangerous after dark and frequently feature on the programs about the police dealing with doobed-up drunks. In fact, if you have one of the nice vertical houses on the High Street, secure your front door at night like Fort Knox, and someone from the night club will still have pissed in your letterbox in the morning.

Chatham is the pits (but there are some nice buildings ont he outskirts) and St Mary's Island glows in the dark and the roses grown there have walk (I'm not joking) on parts in "Alien". Some of thehouses on Madstone Road are nice - but on a main-ish road and pricey.

Strood is best described in Paul Carr (folksinger54)'s song

"My living nightmare I'm in Strood again"

It is without redemption apart from the largely unused temple of the Knight's Templar - alas in the middle of an industrial estate. But it is cheap.

On the peninsular, avoid Chattenden and Hoo like the plague. High Halstow alas got "developed". The pb, the Dead (sorry, Red) Dog now tries to be a (bad) restaurant but the building is nice. Cliffe Woods is mostly 30s to 80s developments. Without charm.

Old Cliffe would be nice - but for a huge council estate so now it is the land where men are men and sheep are nervous. The sheep may be brighter than some of the inbreds. It has a biker pub, the Evening Star.

Cooling has a nice church, a nice (alas converted) rectory, and of course Jools Holland. Otherwise agricultural underclass.

Spendiff has charm and prices, and you need to drive round in ever-diminishing cirles from Cooling to get there.

Upper Dogsbottom (oops, Stoke), where Dilligaff lives, and Kev the gopher (sorry, Clogs) visits, could be nice if one of the parents of the people who live there had taught their children how to speak. It has a proper village pub (White Horse) at least until the landlord can sell it for housing and retire. There is one very nice farmhouse.

Middle Stoke is bleaahh.

Lower Coke could have been nice until the council filled it with sink estates in the 60s. I like it as a mixed village. Prices are low low low but check addresses with me!

All Hallows has a nice church, and a pub that I fear is beyond redemption - and more council and similar housing.

All Hallows on Sea is mostly trailer park and similar - and a chalet holiday camp. Lots of people with tattoos and large outboard motors - on a flat sea with 4 100 horse mercs you can be in Amsterdam intwo hours. Nuff said?

That leaves Grain. St James's Church is nice, and the Hogarth Arms would be, apart from the denizens. It has more explosives per square foor (gas hortonspheres and oil tanks) per square foot than any other part of the UK, is only a small overshoot from a Navy firing range, and was developed to house workers from the now defunct BP oil refinery there - ie those who could not afford a car to go home in or were too stupid to learn to drive.

Actually DH... The plan is to move to Rochester or near vicinity when Chris retires. 7 years to go. Well, that is if I can get a comparable job to the one I currently hold.

In the meantime, we will visit as often as possible and not just because of the highly entertaining reports of Mr. Bridge's experiences. (Did he really get into bar brawl?)

Looking out from Rochester over the Medway, reminds me of the James River in parts of Virginia. Kent on the whole reminds me of central and south east Virginia. It feels like home in more ways than just geology. Can't explain it. Love the folk too, the folkie folk.
