Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: Jack Blandiver Date: 18 Feb 09 - 02:24 PM Seems JK was on Harry Hill's TV Burp at the weekend too - in the studio with Harry Hill & a plastic pig. We missed it, but I think you can watch it again on-line.... |

Thanks for that. I've got a friend on to it now. I enjoyed the 1½ episodes I managed to watch anyway - and the previous series - so I might even end up buying it at some point too. |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: Les in Chorlton Date: 16 Feb 09 - 03:53 AM It was an Anglo, but he can probably make it sound like a banjo if he wanted to. I have a book of tunes of his. Perhaps \I could put a few your way Phil. You at the Beech on Wednesday? Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: Phil Edwards Date: 15 Feb 09 - 06:31 PM that would be an ANGLO concertina Would it? I could have sworn it was making the same notes on the suck & the blow, but maybe JK was cleverly pressing different keys to produce this effect. Fiendish! |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: SteveMansfield Date: 15 Feb 09 - 01:35 PM I missed Ronald Hutton on this, was he on for long? Much to say? I'm not on broadband so iPlayer is no use to me to find out myself, is it worth asking a friend to rip a whole episode for me? He was on for a couple of minutes, about the same amount of time as JK. So that's four or five minutes out of the 55 minute programme, all of which IMNSHO is worth watching even the non-Hutton or Kirkpatrick bits ... so whether that's worth it or not is rather up to you! |

Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: Phil Edwards Date: 15 Feb 09 - 11:36 AM Harry Hill and John Kirkpatrick - great television! I didn't see the original, so that clip took me completely by surprise - I was nudging anyone in reach and saying "that's John Kirkpatrick - that actually is John Kirkpatrick!" Repeat, at higher volume and with added pointing at the screen, when John K appeared in the studio - "that's John Kirkpatrick! there, look! playing a proper English concertina and everything!" I was sorry his appearance was so brief, although it was probably just as well for domestic harmony in the Radish household. My son's response was, "So, is that the apotheosis of your kind of music?" - said with the sarcasm and condescension that only a 13-year-old can muster. I don't care. (What does he know, he listens to Snow Patrol.) I am not actually, when all's said and done, if you get right down to it, an enormous fan of John K personally. But still - there he was, a proper time-served folkie of high renown, singing with a concertina on Saturday teatime TV (TV Burp of all things). Good stuff. |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 15 Feb 09 - 09:14 AM I thought JK looked a bit bemused by it all! I presume he did a bit of merch after the gig ("Come and buy my latest Edison cylinder waxing") Another Harvest Home with folkies performing is the one in the film of "Far From the Madding Crowd", featuring The Great Swarbrick. Resembled the folk scene of 30-40 years ago as the yokels were all drinking brandy, thanks to naughty Sergeant Troy. The scene where the hung over men (including the vicar) crawl out of the barn is priceless - reminded me of a few parties in the Notting Hill area. |

Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 14 Feb 09 - 02:47 PM Just saw a clip from this on 'Harry Hill's TV Burp'. Harry Hill was, as usual, sending the whole thing up (and bloody funny it was too), then cut to Kirkpatrick himself on the show doing the same song just before Harry assaulted him with a pink plastic pig in the manner of Rod Hull and Emu on the Parkinson show. You probably had to be there. |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: GUEST,Meggly Date: 13 Feb 09 - 04:48 AM If people are really keen to see it outside the UK they've already released the DVD; I'm sure you could get it on Amazon if you've a player that supports whatever format it is we have over here. I'd also like to point out that this is the second such series. The same three experts plus two others took part in the recreation of a Jacobean farm about five years ago. It was called 'Tales from the Green Valley'. No John Kirkpatrick, obviously, but they did get a chap in to sing songs and play instruments of the time. This is available on DVD also. |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night-Victorian farm From: SteveMansfield Date: 13 Feb 09 - 03:07 AM And JK was on the same programme again last night (Thurs 12/02) playing anglo and one-row for the Harvest Home celebration, and also teaching some Victorian drinking games by the looks of things! In the same programme they had Ronald Hutton on, talking about harvest traditions: and, completely off-topic but really interesting, some cutting-edge** Victorian farm automation machinery that harvested the wheat but looked like a Difference Engine on wheels ... Repeated on Saturday or up on the iPlayer for a week, but UK only I'm afraid. **pun not intended, sorry |

Subject: RE: victorian farm From: Big Al Whittle Date: 31 Jan 09 - 06:03 PM Yes i saw him. I've seen him in more wild and abandoned moods than he was in his recreation of a Victorian wild and abandoned mood. |

Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: Helen Date: 30 Jan 09 - 01:57 PM Any chance they have video on their website. Unfortunately I don't get BBC2 here in the Antipodes. One of the people in the regular session I used to go to had a book of fiddle tunes with a range of JK's tunes. I love them all! He has the ability, like Turlough O'Carolan, 17th century Irish harper, to create what appears to be a deceptively simple tune but which is something special and unique. I can't think of many people with that gift. Helen |

Subject: Review: John Kirkpatrick on bbc2(briefly) From: Flash Company Date: 30 Jan 09 - 05:47 AM I was watching a BBC2 're-creation' programme called 'Victorian Farm' last night. It is an attempt to copy the life of a Victorian farm over a year staged at the Acton-Scott Farm Museuum in Shropshire and, as of last night had arrived at Spring with lambs and piglets born, crops growing, adnd May-day to celebrate. Come the May-day sequence, up pops a guy with a concertina singing a May song, and I said to S 'That's John Kirkpatrick', about thirty seconds before the voice-over said 'John Kirkpatrick, who is a local folk-lore specialist' or words to similar effect. He got about 5 minutes exposure to a TV audience. I think the programme is repeated early Saturday evening. FC |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: Will Fly Date: 30 Jan 09 - 05:03 AM LOL! She can't be all bad, then. |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 30 Jan 09 - 04:27 AM I'm sending one to Shropshire as we speak. I'm afraid she's just like that. I once bought a new mixing desk. 'What make is it?' she asks. 'It's a Seck' says I, to which, quick as a flash; 'Oh good. I love Secks.' |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: Will Fly Date: 30 Jan 09 - 04:14 AM Tom, Tom (shakes head sadly) - haven't you educated her yet? What hope is there for us mere mortals if you can't brainwash your nearest and dearest? Are you getting a hat with horns, by the way? |
Subject: RE: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 30 Jan 09 - 04:11 AM Haven't been about to get that tune out of my head all night. When I said 'look! it's JK!' the Mrs said - 'what? From Jamiroquai?' |
Subject: John Kirkpatrick on BBC2 last night From: SteveMansfield Date: 30 Jan 09 - 02:47 AM So there we were watching 'The Victorian Farm' on BBC2 last night; it's a 'living history' programme, a group of people running a farm using Victorian technology, one of the better of that type of programme. Who should appear at the May Day celebration but John Kirkpatrick. Some decent music on anglo and one-row, and a bit of chat about the history of the May Day events. Worth watching on the iPlayer, or I think it's repeated on Sunday, if you want to jump straight to JK's bit go for about 50 minutes in (thereby missing all the stuff about boiling pig's heads that made me so glad I'm a vegetarian!) |
