"The main stream media hire professionally educated journalists."

Educated by whom? They all say the same things at the same time. Checking their watches and talking points, it seems.

On the other hand, after listening to O'Keefe himself, it's beginning to look like the Mainstrem Media is trying to channel the debate again.

They got to be pretty stupid to go into Landrieu's office in the first place. What would happen to them if they intercepted a call from the CIA or...?

The punks claim that they wanted to expose Landrieu's staff for not answering the phone in reponse to opponents of the Senator's position.

Numerous letters-to-the-editor in the New Orleans Times-Picayune report satisfaction with the staff's response. Not surprisingly, those among these letter-writers who reveled their opinion on the matter admitted to being supporters of the Senator. (Opponents, of course, would be unlikely to write in Landrieu's defense, regardless of their actual experience.)

O'Keefe's position assumes that staff members may have been promptly answering all calls from supporters, but were letting the phone ring on and on unanswered when the caller wanted to express disagreement.

How exactly were these staffers supposed to know the opinion of each caller without picking up first?

How stupid do these people think the rest of us are?

How stupid are THEY?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, Riginslinger, but if no laws were broken (and if they were, I would think that all of the people involved would be prosecuted), then it doesn't really matter what you think.

"Was it illegal to have the director's brother pay the money back over time?"

Frankly, I think it was. If not, it was certainly unethical. These people work off donations and grants from government entities. It's not the same thing as a family member taking money from his father's company. The public was damaged.

They didn't demonstrate a lack of competence in the people manning the ACORN offices at all. In fact, given what the people manning that particular office were doing, they demonstrated that they are doing a great job. They were trying to help someone they thought was trying to hide from an abusive pimp. This is a good thing.

Was it illegal to have the director's brother pay the money back over time?

They aren't fabricating anything. They've demonstrated that the people manning the ACORN offices are not competent; that's all.

Re: The director's brother: The management cooked up a deal where the money would be paid back over time and the decision was made not to prosecute. They're working with other people's money. They can't proceed that way.

The rest of the organization conspired to cover it up? Please provide some evidence for this allegation.

But they can't demonstrate how undeserving ACORN is of public support if they are fabricating what they say happened. I said before (many times) that the questions that we were hearing on the video were probably not the same ones that the ACORN workers were being asked, because we never saw those questions actually being asked. And I also said that we never saw what the "pimp" was wearing. If you falsify what you are accusing people of saying and doing, you are not highlighting any flaws with the people you are accusing. You are highlighting your own flaws. Flaws that have become even more apparent with this latest scam.

These scam artists are criminals, and nothing they do or say deserves to be taken seriously.

What ACORN did to break the law was done at the top. The brother of the boss embezzled funds and the rest of the organization conspired to cover it up.
What they did with the sting operation was simply to demonstrate how undeserving they are of public support.

Interesting article I found today about O'Keefe:

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7675

-snip-
"You may also not have known that while both independent reports, the other one by the Congressional Research Service [PDF], found no criminal wrong doing by ACORN, they did find that O'Keefe likely the broke the law in at least two states by secretly recording the videos which had voice-overs deceptively edited into them later, "in some cases substantially," according to Harshbarger's report, so that it was "difficult to determine the questions to which ACORN employees are responding."'

Until I read this article, I didn't know that O'Keefe had gone in to the ACORN offices dressed like a student in slacks and a button down shirt, not in that "pimp" outfit that you always see in the news videos on tv. He pretended to be the friend of a girl who was trying to get away from an abusive pimp when he went into the ACORN offices. The hooker and pimp costumes were filmed separately, but gave the impression that they went into the offices dressed that way.

Not so fast. O'Keefe has 32 Congressmen who can vouch for his ambitious patriotism. Can't you feel that this guy will never serve a day in federal prison? For now he will get a bit of pressure to start naming names. If everyone sticks to one story, he's free but fined.

Suppose everyone walks away from him. Micheal Moore might step in to save his ass with a million dollar defense. Its the kind of thing he might do.

O'Keefe is only following Palin's lead: They're only in it for the money.

Lets hope he and his four other buddies have a fine time in Federal prison- after all, its a Federal felony.

Will maybe O'Keefe was hoping to generate more interest in his life story by getting arrested. Has anyone thought that one through? I'm sure there are now several film makers that would like to run with a film version of this episode. Of course he may not have actually thought it through himself; he may actually go to jail.

So sad!

60 minutes would have more sense than to do what these crackpots did, because their lawyers would tell them they could go to prison for it if they did.

They had listening devices to record the reaction of Landrieau staffers.

If 60 Minutes of any orher "gottcha" news organisation had done this it would be considered justifiable because it is in the public interst to know what tricks our elected officials are pulling (such as turning off phones when the people are outraged at the elected party).

Correction: Even if they were only going to record the office's response to the phones not working.

By the way, it can't be argued in either of those scenarios that there was no intention to tamper. Even if they were only going to record the office's response to the phones working, they would have to disable the phone in order for it not to work. Disabling the phone is tampering with it.

They did intend to surveil the office, though, because the guy manning the getaway vehicle had listening devices in the vehicle with him.

Two possibilities, but wiretapping is not one of them...

Revealed(?): What O'Keefe was really up to

As you'll see, an AP reporter who turned up on Matthews's show this afternoon was apparently on the right track. According to a law enforcement source who talked to NBC, the point wasn't to wiretap Landrieu's phones. It was to figure out why so many people had trouble getting through to the office when they called to complain about the ObamaCare "Louisiana Purchase."

Instead, the official says, the men, led by conservative videomaker James O'Keefe, wanted to see how her local office staff would respond if the phones were inoperative. They were apparently motivated, the official says, by criticism that when Sen. Landrieu became a big player in the health care debate, people in Louisiana were having a hard time getting through on the phones to register their views.

That is, the official says, what led the four men to pull this stunt — to see how the local staffers would react if the phones went out. Would the staff just laugh it off, or would they express great concern that local folks couldn't get through?

I'm not sure what would have constituted "great concern." Staffers asking how long it'll be until the phones are fixed? Staffers bursting into tears at the thought that constituents might have to deal with a busy signal for a few hours? Presumably the idea was for O'Keefe to bait them by innocently asking if they'd ever had a phone outage before, to which the reply would ideally be, "Oh yeah, we took them off the hook during the ObamaCare uproar."

Be sure to read Ace's post noting the two subtly but crucially different possibilities here. If theory one is correct, that O'Keefe and company were trying to determine whether Landrieu's staff had disabled the phones at any point to avoid angry voters, then arguably they didn't "interfere" with anything. If theory two is correct, that O'Keefe and company intended to disable the phones themselves to see how the staff would react, well, that sure sounds like "interfering."

Let this be a lesson. It is very dangerous for someone in the "invincible" age group to embrace "tea bag" politics. Being willfully ignorant of reality and also young and reckless is a dangerous combination.
