Subject: RE: ADD:Parting Song: 'along the road of time'(Webber) From: GUEST,Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Mar 24 - 08:52 PM Dave Webber did indeed write “Parting Song” (with lyrics as shown by Jeri in August 2001 - NOT those posted immediately above). I first heard it on the Beggar’s Velvet album entitled Lady of Autumn (another fabulous song) which first came out as an LP in 1990, and later in CD format: one of the best albums I have ever bought! Beggar’s Velvet included Dave Webber, Anni Fentiman, and Charlie and Cathie Yarwood. I did once get to sing it, somewhat unexpectedly, at a funeral: it had been printed into the order of service, but I wasn’t asked until we were on our way into the crematorium! I was about to ask the organist for a start note when he started to play it: I thanked him afterwards and asked him how he knew it: “Oh, I just looked it up on YouTube beforehand” he said! |
Subject: RE: ADD:Parting Song: 'along the road of time'(Webber) From: GUEST,Julia L Date: 19 Mar 24 - 09:57 PM Looks like the lyrics at least are the work of J.B.Goodenough Parting Song (Journey's End) J.B. Goodenough The fire is out, the moon is down, the parting glass is dry and done, And I must go and leave this town, before the rising of the sun. And long’s the road and long’s the mile Before I rest my soul again With girls who weep and girls who smile And all the words and ways of men For some there are who cannot bide, but wander to the journey's end, Nor take a girl to be a bride nor have a man to be a friend. And when I'm done with wandering, I'll sit beside the road and weep, For all the songs I did not sing, and promises I did not keep. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Parting Song: 'along the road of time' From: GUEST,Phil Heming Date: 19 Mar 24 - 09:58 AM In a tribute to Jonh Purdy, at the start of his book, he wrote these words
Just lay me down in country ground for to find eternal peace. And there's just one thing before I go with you I'd like to share, That peace for me will only be when song is in the air" I asked Dave for permission to use this as the final verse of this song, to which he agreed. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Road of Time (Dave Webber) From: Elmore Date: 27 Mar 13 - 05:03 PM Hearing Dave and Annie (and the audience) do this live is thrilling. It brings a tear to the eye of this jaded old folkie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Along the Road of Time (Dave Webber) From: GUEST Date: 27 Mar 13 - 04:50 PM So grateful someone wrote down the lyrics & saved me having to stop/strat my lady of Autumn CD. Such a beautiful song. In company with my partner I want to sing it at my retirement bash next month. |

Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: Jeri Date: 21 Aug 01 - 06:11 PM Hope you added than information, Joe. Thank you. BTW, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman also sing in the chorus on the Johnny Collins recording, and Dave produced it. |
Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Aug 01 - 04:33 PM It's also available on the 1993 CD called Together - Solo, by Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. I had trouble understanding some of the lyrics, so I'm glad you transcribed it, Jeri. Here's what's said in the CD booklet: Dave was having a very long and honest conversation with a very close friend in the small hours of the morning when the realisation dawned that time was running out. It was the last conversation of its kind that they were to have, and Dave wrote this song in memory of a true friend and to serve as a parting song for any circumstance.Dedicated to the memory of John Purdy of Torquay (1927-1993)-Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: Jeri Date: 21 Aug 01 - 02:50 PM BAM!!! Got it! The clue provided by Sorcha was that the name of the song wasn't what I'd thought. It's called "The Parting Song," and I'll either find the lyrics in the forum or post 'em. It's on Johnny Collins's "Now & Then," which I was inexplicably able to find. |

Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: MMario Date: 21 Aug 01 - 02:34 PM never heard of it - but sounds like one I will want to learn. |
Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: Jeri Date: 21 Aug 01 - 02:26 PM I may have the name wrong, but I don't think so. I've been looking around and can't find any evidence that Dave Webber recorded it. I wonder who has? Johnny Collins maybe?
What I can remember of the chorus: |
Subject: RE: Along the Road of Time by Dave Webber From: Sorcha Date: 21 Aug 01 - 01:58 PM Jeri, we may have a small problem. According to what I found, Jimmie Driftwood wrote Along the Road of Time; the only thing Webber did that is remotely similar is All Along the Rossendale. I didn't find lyrics for either of them.......... |
Subject: Lyr Req: Along the Road of Time From: Jeri Date: 21 Aug 01 - 01:34 PM I was just called by a friend of mine who'd been e-mailed by a friend of his who was looking for the words to this song. I said "no problem." (Famous last words.) Now I can't find it in the DT or past discussions, and the recording I have it on has apparently has slipped through a wormhole or been carried off by faeries or something. Does anyone out there have the words? Please? |
