That's an old tale/joke of a farmer holding his pig up to the tree branches so it could eat the appes hanging there. Somebody told him he waqs wasting his time. He ought to pick 'em and put 'em on the ground. The farmer's answer? "What's time to a pig????"

I've used the same line when some deride me for spending days, weeks even months & years here at Mudcat.

What a great idea. Thank you and back at you and the rest of my mudcat and kitten friends. For anyone who is interested, Pearland, Texas is 10 miles from downtown Houston. For anyone not interested it's in the same place. This year you guys have helped me find songs I thought were lost forever. I got an e mail 2-3 weeks ago from Brian in Wales (UK) about a song from the late 40's early 50's titled "Bald Head" I've been searching for. Another was "It ain't easy bein' white" Gene in El Paso, Tx. found that one for me, and on and on. What a grand gesture to honor your friends with a merry Christmas. Hi Shambles, I'd completely forgotten about the Sambles bank and light vessel, just shows how fickle memory is. I would think your derivation is probably correct, but don't know. I heard the news about the automation of the last light house, North Foreland is close to my home town of course. Light houses in New Zealand have been automated for some years now.

Shambles, I believe here in the US we just recently lost our last manned lighthouse to a fully automated system. In some places permission has been given for individules or groups to maintain & man lights for navagational aids but they are not officially part of the Lighthouse system. Would make a nice thread topic. Barry

Hail from York, now that is interesting.

I take it that you mean the street in York with the over-hanging houses and shop fronts called The Shambles. In a way that is probably correct, but in a round about way.

The Shambles is the name of our band. Where we rehearsed on the Isle of Portland, we could hear the audible warning from what used to be called The Shambles Lightship and is now unmanned. There are now (last week saw the last one automated) no manned lighthouses in the UK.

This buoy is guarding a dangerous sandbank called The Shambles, that has claimed many lives.

I think I am right in saying that the street in York is called The Shambles due to the fact that there were at one time a lot of butchers shops there. The meat was displayed on a sloping shelf, known as a 'shamel'.

It is not too difficult to see that a sloping sandbank might also be called a 'shamel' and later become The Shambles?

Speaking of MeaTSKIN cOUNTY--Did a major drawback on my (left fore)finger yesterday with a utility knife--its wrapped in large comical looking tube of gauze and I'm glad for the many years of guitar/typing practicethat strnehened the other three digits--anyone with info on Django Reinhardt guitar technique please send it. (I'm kidding, sort of--it was the side, not the tip that I sliced fortunately and a full recivery is predicted eventually)

I was going to start with Meatskin County, but there was one big drawback with that idea.

But I know how you feel about rejection and as we all know El Cerrito is pretty much the centre of the universe, so I thought I would start there. (Halfway through I was beginning to wish I hadn't started at all). Yours was the first introduction and it was done pretty much in the order that the introductions came in, so there is no need for Wisconsin to feel that any value judgements were being made. I take your point about our friend Takeo, but he must have introduced himself (as others must have done) in other threads, (including the Mudcat UK one that started it) my greetings are extended to all.

To those who don't know what all this rubbish is about, this was a thank you to all who responded to the 'Mudcat (The World) where are you?' threads.

Part 11 HERE, has still plenty of room for anyone who would like to let us know where, who you are and to tell us what weather conditions are prevailing. I for one would like to see it as an ongoing thing, for new people are joining us all the time, seasons change and I'm just plain nosy.

Again may I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
