Subject: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 23 Mar 04 - 07:28 AM I half-heard a bloke speaking on the radio this morning about a photographer who gets her(??) subjects to bring in 6 items that represent their life. So I thought about it today & decided the following are my life. A teddy bear (I make them & collect them) A book (I've been a reader all my life) A poster for my folk club (always have a few in my bag) A song printed out from Mudcat or another source (& always printed in 12 or 14 font Arial so I can read it!!) Sushi (I take it to clubs & sessions & often have it for dinner) A waistcoat (I'm never seen without one, ditto a hat but that would make 7 items) what's your list? sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Allan C. Date: 23 Mar 04 - 08:58 AM To truly represent my life I'd need to bring in six other people. It is the people I've met that have made all the difference in my life. However, I'll try to play by the rules and list some things instead. In no particular order… The Mudcat Adventure Guitar (a memento of one of the best times I've ever had and symbolic of the many people here whom I have grown to love so much) A painting that Alice (in Montana) made of the family farm in West Virginia A ceramic hand my mother made (It has a green thumb. She was quite a gardener.) A set of woodcarving chisels my father used and then gave to me to use I wish I had some objects other than photos to represent my two daughters; but I don't and so photos will have to suffice. Two coins I still have from a trip to Ireland (mementos of the very best time I ever had) |

Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Bobert Date: 23 Mar 04 - 09:32 AM Well, I'd have a hand (1) comin' in from the left side with pen (2) writing in a "I love you_________... See you tonight..." on a scrap of paper (3). Above the scrap of paper would be a rose (4) lying at a bottom right to upper left for composition with the hand's direction intersecting. Under the rose a cloth napkin (5) that extends off the top right portions of the scetch. with some contrasting folds with just a portion of one of it's corners overlapping the scrap of paper. The finish off the still life a crumpled scrap of paper (6) somewhere in the upper left area for balance and symbolism. Now you know why I drove my professors nuts when I was in art school... Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 24 Mar 04 - 07:45 AM what a great lot of lives! and thanks to Mrs Duck for the pics. As a hat wearer I can certainly admire that wonderful hat. My favourite hat is a boater I've had for about 25 years. It's getting very decrepit, but is irreplacable cos no-one seems to wear boaters today. It didn't cost a fortune (I've never had one to spend!) but it of better quality straw than any other hats around. Allan C: forget the rules - people can be significant items in life - who are they? |
Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Allan C. Date: 24 Mar 04 - 09:39 AM In her post Sandra encouraged me to set the rules aside and to list the people I would put in the picture. Now that I have completed the list, I am wondering if this might deserve its own thread. It was much more difficult to do than the list of things. I didn't include members of my family in the list because it is obvious that they would be a part of such a representation. Such a picture would include: - a former teacher who recognized and encouraged my originality of thought. - a woman from whom I learned the importance of having true friendship as the basis for a romantic relationship. - a former patient of about my same age who awoke from a nap to discover she was paralyzed from the waist down and in a matter of hours, from the neck down as a result of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. From her I learned how quickly so much that we take for granted could be taken away from us. - a former boss from whom I learned it was far more productive to discover the solution to a problem than to dwell upon who caused it. - a farmer from whom I learned the true definition of selfless generosity. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 25 Mar 04 - 07:10 AM thanks to everyone & especially thanks to Allan C for his inspiring list. Subject: RE: BS: Your 6 items for a still-life From: Metchosin Date: 27 Mar 04 - 01:52 PM I don't have a still life, therefore I'm having trouble coming up with 6 things that might be considered constant. Apart from music, which I can't figure out how to symbolize, I can come up with only four other things, in order of appearance. A dog, a pair of boots, a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Junkies are always junkies and I started carrying my monkeys early. |
