Not BS, because I'm posting as a grounded concertina player. Why? Because some effing Weimaraner has decided to sink its teeth into my right arm. And I can't get Plod to have the dog taken away or put down, because they won't take my word as 100% positive ID and without that they won't take the case to court.

So the owner is laughing his bollocks off, he's got off scot free and the dog is still there (better hide your kids).

Meanwhile I'm stuck at home with my bandaged arm in a sling, I can't sleep at night, I'm popping antibiotics until they're squirting out of my arse (which I'm having to try and wipe left-handed), contemplating the bloody arrogance of dog-owners, and I can't even play my concertina.

Something is wrong with this picture.

Dogs are nasty, noisy, unhygeinic and dangerous, what is the point of them?

According to Wikipedia the Weimaraner is the 21st most intelligent breed of dog, so god save us from all the even-more-stupid ones.

In the early days of the space program they used to send dogs up in rockets. Shame they stopped really.

Did I mention that I hate dogs?

i am with leadfingers on this, it is the same with children i think.
there are some parents that let their kids get away with anything, don't care where they are or who they are with.
it can be the same with dog owners, was the owner with the dog when it bit you g-force?

i would hate the owner if i were you.
i feel sorry for you,i know from experiance how hard it is to have to wipe your' arse with the wrong hand!!

our dogs are under very strict control while we are with them, but have been a couple of times aggressive when we have left them, which we have taken total responsabality(?) for.
the fault has been entirely ours at festivals when we have forgotten to shorten the chains they are on, which normally isn't a problem, we have now sorted that out now, since we do not want it to happen again.

now we have a caravan, they no longer escape from the car, ..who knew that a dog could squeeze his head through a gap that is smaller than his head???(2-3 inches).

the dog owner should have been brought in front of a court at least for loss of earnings and truama from the attack.

i hope your' arm gets better soon, please don't write off all dogs and owners, most of us as with parents try to do a good job.

take care

OK, OK, I'm sure dogs can be lovely, especially if you are their owner.

Really I'm just letting off steam as a way of getting 'closure'. The police may have closed their file, but that doesn't help me, or my wife who is now terrified to go out in the street. Perhaps we'll just have to drive everywhere (stuff the planet, dogs have their rights).

The dog was out on its own, in the street, no owner or muzzle or anything.

That's just not on (for other people and the dog), and what gets the rest of us dog owners a bad name. Why these idiots are allowed to keep animals is beyond me.

Weimaraners are usually pretty good. They are a hunt-point-retrieve dog and should be soft-mouthed. My Benjamin is a border-cross and I do not take him to festivals precisely because he is rather territorial - and likes to chase things, even though he is getting older. Sheep could be quite a problem! On the other hand he is useful for deterring burglars.

Why not bring civil proceedings for damages? There you only have to prove your case "on the balance of probabilities" not "beyond reasonable doubt".

If you check your buildings and/or contents insurance you may find you have cover that may enable you to get your insurance company to pay for suing the dog-owner.

I quite like dogs, but they have been a problem to us in that we have an autistic son, and, like many autistic people he is scared of dogs, possibly because of their unpredictable behaviour.

Most dog owners realise this when they see us approaching and will hold their dogs close while we pass, but you get the occasional one who thinks that the dogs on a lead bit doesn't apply to them.

I agree it's the owners rather than the dogs. Man and dog have been in a symbiotic relationship for centuries but maybe we need to rethink the whole pets thing. Many dogs are just a lifestyle accessory to go in the Range Rover.

Yes,I agree.Your local Police (I don't know where you are ?) must be total rubbish if they don't even know the law regarding dogs roaming the streets....perhaps one of them is the owner,or a relative,or something? ...it all sounds very fishy to me! Anyway, I would sue the owner AND the Police, and if I saw an unsupervised dog running around outside my house, biting people,I would persuade it to desist with my nice new "Draper" garden spade.
Oh yes,and my partner,Wild Flying Dove, has two dogs,a Poodle and a Hovercraft ( or it sounds like that),and they're both delightful ! (so is she!!). Get well soon-----meanwhile,I will track down some left-handed toilet -tissue for you.

If you can't prevent your dog jumping all over other dogs, strangers and/or their picnic or tent or whatever, then they should keep them on a lead at all times. Bloody fecks me off when you hear 'oh he doesn't bite ha ha ha ha'. The owners are more annoying if anything, for the fact that you are supposed to find is as entertaining as they evidently do.

our dogs are fine with sheep, horses and cattle, it is just when people come too close to the caravan, but we have taken to covering up the van windows with tarpulin, leaving the radio on so they can't hear outside, and we chain them to the wheel of the van.we have learnt alot since we got the third one, who we rescued from an alleyway in nottingham just teid and left. this is why he is so protective, he is so thick that he barks at his own refletion in windows and the mirror in the house!!

we have often come back to complaints of noise but we know that they settle down after 3/4 mins and when we come back they are fast asleep.

back on point, we have even gone so far as to buy a chain for someone whos dog kept escaping to make sure that everyone was safe. loose dogs are a danger to pedestrians and drivers alike. i haven't had to make the choice yet as to whether i hit the dog or risk an accident, fingers crossed i will never have to.

what also makes me mad is at festivals the people who don't pick up after their dog!!

rant over for now

take care all

The only bad experience I've had with a dog was when my girlfriend's pug decided to pee in my guitar case. Fortunately, the guitar was not in it!

Btw, don't go bad-mouthing cats -- if you're living on a farm or in the country, you'll find they do a lot of good in the way of pest control. I'd much rather have a cat or two than to go leaving poison or traps about.

Cats are brilliant! They just are... See here:

"My Cat Jeoffry" by Christopher Smart

from _Jubilate Agno_ (Rejoice in the Lamb).

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.

For he is the servant of the Living God, duly and daily serving him.

For at the first glance on the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.

For is this done by wreathing his body seven times around with elegant quickness.

For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.

For he rolls upon prank to work it in.

For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.

For this he performs in ten degrees.

For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.

For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.

For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.

For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.

For fifthly he washes himself.

For sixthly he rolls upon wash.

For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.

For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.

For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.

For tenthly he goes in quest of food.

For having considered God and himself he will consider his neighbor.

For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.

For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.

For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.

For when his day's work is done his business more properly begins.

For he keeps the Lord's watch in the night against the adversary.

For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.

For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.

For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.

For he is of the tribe of Tiger.

For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.

For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.

For he will not do destruction if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.

For he purrs in thankfulness when God tells him he's a good Cat.

For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.

For every house is incomplete without him, and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.

For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats and the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.

For every family had one cat at least in the bag.

For the English Cats are the best in Europe.

For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.

For the dexterity of the defense is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.

For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.

For he is tenacious of his point.

For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.

For he knows that God is his Saviour.

For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.

For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.

For he is of the Lord's poor, and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually -- Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.

For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.

For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.

For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.

For he is docile and can learn certain things.

For he can sit up with gravity, which is patience upon approbation.

For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.

For he can jump over a stick, which is patience upon proof positive.

For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.

For he can jump from an eminence into his master's bosom.

For he can catch the cork and toss it again.

For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.

For the former is afraid of detection.

For the latter refuses the charge.

For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.

For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.

For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.

For he killed the Icneumon rat, very pernicious by land.

For his ears are so acute that they sting again.

For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.

For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.

For I perceived God's light about him both wax and fire.

For the electrical fire is the spiritual substance which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.

For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.

For though he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.

For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.

For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.

For he can swim for life.

For he can creep."

I'm with you I hate dogs and cats, not all just some.I got a bite by a dog when I was on my bicycle and the owner of the dog just walked on by and asked me if I was all right after watching me being bit by his dog, it had bit my foot and he stood and watched his dog attacking me on my bike. He never said that he was sorry or told his dog off, he just grabbed it and put the lead on and then walked away.

I'll go with Richard on this one - I used to be an injury claims handler and would occasionally have to deal with dog bite cases. The burden of proof is not as great here but getting your money if the owner doesn't have any kind of insurance that might cover the loss might be a problem. However, it might make them think a bit about their responsibility for the dog if it looks as if they are going to be hit in the pocket.

Sounds as if the police round your way think they have more important things to do. Wonder what will happen if this dog bites and badly injures a child next time.

To say that all dogs are bad because some dogs are bad is a bit like saying that folk music is bad because some folk musicians are bad.

I have had quite a few dogs, including English and Staffordshire bull terriers and a bull mastiff, and none of them ever attacked a person, a cat or another dog. This is because I vetted the parents and the breeders before buying them, and then I trained them properly.

Both my wife and my son have, however, been quite badly bitten by other people's dogs, including one that belonged to a policeman.

I wouldn't say that there is no such thing as a bad dog, but there are plenty of bad owners.

G-force, your local council should have a dog warden - he or she would probably be the best person to contact. Around us they take their responsibilities very seriously.

Hi, I'm back on line after my 5th hospital visit in 4 days.

Thanks for the advice and good wishes from all those who have sided with me rather than with the owner/dog combination.

To clarify, the dog wasn't a 'stray' in the usual sense of the word, it was just standing in the street outside the gateway of the owner's house. But the street was deserted (8.30 on Sunday morning) (I know, it's my fault for being awake) and it just went for me in a flash then ran back round the back.

The good news is that it attacked a man's arm rather than a child's throat. Even better, it didn't cut an artery (what would I have done, I was about 200 yards from home), and it now seems that the nerves and probably the tendons are undamaged so I should be OK in about 2 - 3 weeks. My next paid concertina gig is 1st August, so it's touch and go.

The police did get involved, at some length, but probably won't prosecute. I don't yet know what they said to the owner, but will be sure to find out.

G-force, I am so glad to hear that no nerves and probably no tendons are damaged. Meanwhile, you have my heartfelt sympathy. 4 hospital visits in 5 days!

Have you told the docs that you are a musician and will probably need physical therapy after all this?

But you don't just need healing, you need revenge. I suggest you distribute a few copies of a flyer which has a picture of a Weimaraner on it. Then write:

                   PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE

On [date] a dog such as this was loose on this street and attacked an _____ year-old folk musician. The dog was not provoked in any way. Note the ugly liver color of the coat and the creepy pale eyes.

[G-force, add ten years to your age for better impact.]

We must not be too hasty in blaming the dog. It may have been crazed by hunger and thirst because its owner was too stoned, hung over or mesmerized by pornography to care for it properly.

Nonetheless, be alert for such a dog and take steps necessary to protect yourself, the elderly, and the children.

=======
That should help. Then, accept it that you deserve special treats and coddling. First, think about what you would like. A ride in the country with your favorite CD's playing? An entire batch of homemade cookies, all for you?

Perhaps you would like to sit under an oak tree and listen to traditional music played by your friends. Let them bring you a glass of wine and some sweetmeats.

Whatever it is, start calling in your markers and start the return to life with music.

I don't know where you live but here in New York you can bring a small claims action for 10 dollars and I think it is up to 3000 dollars. If the authorities don't want to do anything I would make a statement though a civil action. I love all dogs but as a dog owner I don't let mine bite people nor do I keep a dog that is.

as for me not biting people, it has been known but my doggy is less fussy to what goes in his mouth LOL.

there are too many owners who just let their dogs out and don't check that they can't escape, there are also those who let them out on the street and don't want them back until night, one of ours is a result of this, even though is it a love story, it is out of order.

I know in Buffalo when my kid was working at the SPCA they had to put down many of the pitbulls and Rotweillers, some of the gang members had them and thought it was cool to train a dog to be aggressive ... made them think they were "bad" or something. I felt sorry for the dogs. Some dogs are just troubled and there is nothing you can do. others are made that way by assholes

Take a camera with you and if you see the beast stepping one foot off its property take the picture and report to police. Keep a log of incidents and contact with authorities.

I hate it when people don't control their pets, letting them even jump on you even when friendly. How in the world do they tolerate that? I am past being polite, even in a friend's house. I deal directly with the dog and I tell it to stop in no uncertain terms.

I think the first time a dog bites a human off its property, or a civil servant (as opposed to guest) on its property, that dog should be put to sleep. And pit bulls should have to have like triple fences, 20 feet high. Zero tolerance for pit bulls and their stupid oh but he is my son owners. mg

"Dogs are nasty, noisy, unhygeinic and dangerous, Dogs are nasty, noisy, unhygeinic and dangerous, what is the point of them?"

I could say exactly the same about some humans who've crossed my path, G Force......say isn't that the name of a "what is the point of them?" rap group..now talk about a waste of space!

I once sent a dog that gratuitously bit me to doggie heaven, about five seconds after he bit me. I strangled the bastard. That said, my German Shepherd--named Tamar--saved my life once (and saved me from serious injury another time). Ther are good dogs out there. Have you considered killing the fucking thing?
