As far as I know, Obama has not claimed to have had direct contact with beings from another planet. The fact that such beings find him unworthy of contact automatically makes him unworthy of being President.

On the other hand, if he did claim to have had direct contact with beings from another planet he'd be a whacked out nut case and, therefore, unworthy of being President.

It amazes me that some people are still going on about Barack Obama's racial identity. "He's not b;lack [sic]; he's not white; have another go".??!!

Obama's not Black?! Says who?? Surely not Barack Obama.

I consider Kendall's comment that "he's [Baracka Obama]half white" to be interesting phrasing since for a long time in the United States an individual was either considered to be all White, or not White at all. Racially mixed people with Black/White ancestry were called "half Black" but never "half White". Perhaps that custom is changing.

But the only reason why Obama and other Black Americans who have one Black birth parent and one White birth parent aren't considered White is because of the United States' racist one drop of "black blood" rule.

Actually, in a sane world Barack Obama would be considered to be Black and he would also be considered to be White. Not that his racial identity or anyone else's racial identity would matter in a sane world.

However, the fact of the matter is that according to the way the USA socially defines racial identity at this time Barack Obama is Black. And Barack Obama's election as the Democratic party's nominee for President is a historical occurance for African Americans and for all other Americans.

And when, God willing, Senator Barack Obama is elected President of the USA, he won't be the Black President or the White President or the half-white President. When he wins this election, Barack Obama won't be or the half-black President or the racially mixed President. BHe will be the President of the United States of America.

Barack Obama will be the President of all of the people in the United States equally regardless of our race, ethnicity, gender, sexually orientation, income, age, and/or our religion or our lack of religion.

Some people may not be ready for a new day, but a change is still gonna come.

Azizi

I'd prefer to just talk of candidates, not red, yellow or green ot aNy other colour ones.

I was just making a small amendment.

It's different in the US, I gather, but here in the UK, we used to use the phrase 'mixed race' for someone with mixed parentage.

Actually, we're all 'mixed race', and cousins of each other.

These are guerilla tactics in this questionable thread.

Still a humourous, therapist-cum-philosopher-cum-Spurs supporter-cum-left/hander-cum-book collector - cum- occasional Guardian reader - cum - supporter of the BBC would say that, wouldn't I?

Should we have threads to smear posters? Course not.

I think Obama's election to the WHite House is going to make an important, fundamental change in the future track of this country and, indirectly, of the world.

It will be interesting times, that much is for sure.

The convergence of upcoming technical advances and a re-balancing of the economy with a stronger basic bloc and less emphasis on hyperactivity and derivatives, instead of basic productivity, will gradually restore strength tot he economy and between these two vectors and his sense of perspective, I think some positive things will appear.

If he's never been to a Tim Horton's, how can he expect to get the Canadian vote? He did not capture a single Canadian delegate (or even a super delegate) during the primaries.

McCain's subliminal association with frozen french fries could help him at the Canadian ballot boxes during election time.

"religion should not be left out of the public arena"

to leave any individual or group out of the public arena is undemocratic and descriminatory.

Democracy is inclusive by it's very nature.

I'm not religious but I believe every point of view has the right to be represented.

I condemn any attempt to exclude any group or individual from the democratic process.

Stringsinger and Riginslinger, it is interesting how such purportedly progressive and modern viewpoints as yours turn out on closer examination to be merely reactonary and politically backward.

Clutching at straws ... bitter twisted and sad.

Thankfully you represent a fading era.

A mystery is developing, arising from on obscured and contentious factual assertions. Looks like a job for heric

This appears to be a reference to a speech by Obama June, 2006 at a conference sponsored by progressive evangelicals. He apparently said (again paraphrased):

"Obama's three points were presented as 'some truths' or 'ground rules' fostering civility and effective political compromise in the public arena of a democracy.

1. Leaders must understand and appreciate the critically important role that the separation of church and state 'has played in preserving not only our democracy, but the robustness of our religious practice.'

2. When the religiously motivated attempt to influence public policy they must be prepared to argue from universal, rational values and insights that are open to debate. Obama's point is quite clear and very specific – 'I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all.'

3. Harmonious interactions between religiously motivated public political activity and the multiple realities of democratic pluralism require what Obama calls a 'sense of proportion.' He argues that not every public citing of God is a breach in the divide between church and state. His advice is a cautionary word to those who react with indignant outrage at the use of school property by voluntary student prayer groups or the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance phrase 'under God.' The coercive impact of such events and phrases Obama suggests need to be seen in context and proportion.

There also seem to be some who are trying to muddle the clear differences between Obama and McCain on the separation of church and state.

McCain said (9-2007) "the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation". When immigrants come here "they know they are in a nation founded on Christian principles".

Source: Pew Center

Obama's views are rather different, as indicated already in this thread.

Anybody thinking of not supporting Obama should research further what McCain believes on this issue.

** WARNING **   AMERICAN DOMINIONIST-FASCIST CONTENT ***

Here's a posting I received here in America's Heartland... as you will see, the dull-wits known as the American Right are getting organized. You might also note that it is rabies season in these parts. I send this without edits of any kind.   I would like to publicly thank the idiot who had forwarded the message to me:

If our nation elects Obama as president - we had better buckle our seat belts - the ride is going to be rough! This will be a time when we, as Christians, need to be/become vocal or else we will get what we deserve. Bill Brown, is a highly respected retired member of the Billy Graham team. So, I take his assessment of Obama very seriously and for that reason accept his challenge to pass this on. I share his concern about the 'rock star' image Obama has and watch with growing concern at the celebrity status the media has foisted upon him. Here is hope this email informs you in a wise way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are witnessing a political phenomenon with Barack Obama of rare magnitude. His speeches have inspired millions and yet most of his followers have no idea of what he stands for except platitudes of 'Change' or that he says he will be a 'Uniteder'. The power of speech from a charismatic person truly can be a powerful thing. Certainly Billy Graham had charisma and both his manner of speech and particularly the content changed millions. On the extreme other hand, the charisma of Adolph Hitler inspired millions and the results were catastrophic. Barack Obama certainly is no Hitler or a Billy Graham, but for many Americans out there feeling just like a surfer who might be ecstatic and euphoric while riding a tidal wave, the real story is what happens when it hits shore . Just Some of What Defines Barack Obama:
· He voted against banning partial birth abortion.
· He voted no on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.
· Supports affirmative action in Colleges and Government.
· In 2001 he questioned harsh penalties for drug dealing.
· Says he will deal with street level drug dealing as minimum wage affair.
· Admitted marijuana and cocaine use in high school and in college.
· His religious convictions are very murky.
· He is willing to meet with Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Kim Jung Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
· Has said that one of his first goals after being elected would be to have a conference with all Muslim nations.
· Opposed the Patriot Act.
· First bill he signed that was passed was campaign finance reform.
· Voted No on prohibiting law suits against gun manufacturers.
· Supports universal health-care.
· Voted yes on providing habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees.
· Supports granting driver's license to illegal immigrants.
· Supports extending welfare to illegal immigrants.
· Voted yes on comprehensive immigration reform.
· Voted yes on allowing illegal aliens to participate in Social Security.
· Wants to make the minimum wage a 'living wage'.
· Voted with Democratic Party 96 percent of 251 votes.
· Is a big believer in the separation of church and state.
· Opposed to any efforts to Privatize Social Security and instead supports increasing the amount of tax paid.
· He voted No on repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax.
· He voted No on repealing the 'Death' Tax.
· He wants to raise the Capital Gains Tax.
· Has repeatedly said the surge in Iraq has not succeeded....
· He is ranked as the most liberal Senator in the Senate today and that takes some doing. If your political choices are consistent with Barack Obama's and you think that his positions will bring America together or make it a better place, then you will probably enjoy the ride and not forward this Email. If you are like most Americans that after examining what he stands for, are truly not in line with his record, it would be prudent to get off the wave or better yet, never get on, before it comes on shore and undermines the very foundations of this great Country. We have limited time to save America or the Supreme Court as we know it. Inaction is action. If you agree this is important, pass it on. The mainstream media will not do it for you! Bill Brown MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS

Re: supporting neither Obama nor McCain. "There are other candidates". For somebody in denial, yes.

Anybody who does not back what McCain stands for has only one choice: Obama. Otherwise he or she is likely to see President McCain. If that's fine with you, great. But in that case let's have no whining about what President McCain does--and that he will act on his belief that the US was founded as a Christian nation, and appoint Supreme Court justices who also believe this.   And he will continue the Iraq war til "victory". Etc.

It's probably reasonable to assume that a voter who finds himself/herself voting for a third party candidate will discover there is a counter vote out there for some other third party candidate, so it doesn't follow that if you are not voting for one of the major party candidates, you are casting a vote for McCain.

Myself, for instance, I'm registered "Green." If I vote for the Green Party candidate, somebody else will vote for the Libertarian candidate. We can both take comfort in the fact that neither one of us did anything to advance the insanity that the two major parties are trying so desperately to impose on the American people.

In a close election, as many recently have been, a minor candidate can easily make the difference. Perhaps people have forgotten the 2000 election.

The only way to prevent a similar event is to vote for the major party candidate who reflects your positions more than the other major party candidate.   It ain't rocket science--except to those in denial.
