Subject: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 05 Feb 04 - 06:40 AM Mudcat 2004 Alternative British Folk Awards - Nominations! 2004 sees the second year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. Last year, a completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below. Your nominations are sought for this year's folk spectacular.
Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
Last year a number of SPECIAL AWARDS were also included in the ceremony (see below). Your suggestions and nominations for any special categories will be considered by the committee. The "Two In A Bar Award" for the best nonexistent Session/Singaround
please PM me with nominations etc. by 1st March 2004 so that voting can commence in good time for the awards to be published on the now-traditional date of 1st April.
Go to it, folks! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: GUEST Date: 05 Feb 04 - 04:02 PM The trouble with "non commercial" is that there is no national exposure. To be fair nominations would have to be from "commercial" performers who have been around an above average selection of venues. Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 12 Feb 04 - 05:10 AM I've been wondering how to address the problem that people don't know too much about sessions etc. out of their area. When nominations close in 1 March, I'd like to post some brief notes about each person/session etc. nominated. Anyone who wants ... PM me with some details would you? Esp. if you have nominated someone. BTW ... far as I know, Llantrisant is in Britain!!! ;-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: treewind Date: 12 Feb 04 - 08:10 AM Dave - PUB/CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR: Simon Ritchie Good call! BEST PUB SESSION: The Old Rose And Crown, Thaxted Can you tell me more about this one e.g. when? Worst Jumper worn by a folkie award Bernie Kedge of the now-almost-defunct Mayflower Club in Cambridge has to be a contender for that. Session nominations will mostly necessarily be local to the nominators. One exception: The Radway at Sidmouth. Only once a year but goes on all week subject to the pub closing at night. The Fox at Pirton (near Hitchin, 2nd Wednesdays) is a good one, real cracker last night. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 12 Feb 04 - 09:11 AM Anahata Is the Mayflower still going? Wow ... I used to go there in the '60s! I don't suppose Eric is still playing the banjo is he? - I've got an old recording of him playing a few tunes with some others at a party around 1970. :-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Les in Chorlton Date: 12 Feb 04 - 09:54 AM How about an award for the most mobile folk club? Any suggestions? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: George Papavgeris Date: 12 Feb 04 - 10:14 AM Windward in St Albans wins hands down, with 6 addresses in 2 months: King Harry St Stephens Church Hall - main St Stephens Church Hall - small White Hart Comfort Hotel Duke of Marlborough And often the change of venue took place 2 days before the club night... Must be Breezy's aftershave... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Dave of Mawkin Date: 12 Feb 04 - 11:18 AM Well its not a folk club, but it is a session, the travelling friday session in essex does 4 different pubs a month. Anahata, Im glad someone else also loves Simon Ritchie, the man is a genius, a performer to the very sense of the word. I didnt really know who the other awards should go to, so I chose my band mates and friends of mine! Regarding the Thaxted Session, its every 5th Monday (i think) of the month, which usually means theres only 3 (i think) a year. I see you and Mary are playing down The Essex Singers Club, ask Keith Carpenter, as he regularly goes. You cant miss keith, his got big fuzzy hair, a big grin and looks northern, smokes like a chimney but only drinks one day a year. hope this is useful.Im not clued up on folk that much as im only 17, and have college to think about and my reputation! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: treewind Date: 12 Feb 04 - 11:38 AM Yes thanks, that's useful and your reputation is already demolished just for talking to me. I'll give Keith a bell about travelling Friday sessions. As if there wasn't enough choice already on Fridays... There's a travelling Thursday session in Suffolk (fixed rota of pubs for 1,2,3,4th, varies on 5th) I didn't know other places had something like that. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 16 Feb 04 - 08:55 AM Two weeks left to put your nominations forward, folks... I'll put mine in later!!! There'll be an award for folk dance as well as for drama (after all, the Govt seems to be saying that Mummers are actually Morris Dancers these days!) ... ;-) |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Skipper Jack Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:28 PM How about this then - the folk club with the shortest life span? I opened a folk club at a pub in Neath, South Wales. Went back the following week to find the place all boarded up. They didn't bother to tell us that the pub was closing! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: breezy Date: 16 Feb 04 - 06:26 PM The Moorland Folk Club near Wotter, Plymuffway Very friendly, hard working ,quality guest nights, great singing audience. Didnt we play there last Sunday George? btw you forgot to mention the Legion but never mind, As I visit more clubs and sessions than anyone else in the country probably I should make the final desicion descision you know , give out the prizes. You cant vote for your own so I cant mention the song club in St Albans that has Les Sullivan this Friday if only we knew where and Steve Last on Sunday at the Legion jusrememberd sattheDuke of marlbro this bodintons gud |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 17 Feb 04 - 12:34 PM I'd like to suggest an award for a regular dance event, and make a nomination. Citation below. A year or so ago, Alan and Theo of "The Unicorn" fame started a monthly barndance in Hitchin town hall. The got good bands and excellent callers and made use of local performers (morris, sword dancers, mummers etc.) for the interval. It was a bit quiet to start with, but they have persevered and now it is quite a healthy and lively event with a regular following as well as a good few non-regulars every month. So ... Unicorn Ceilidhs, Hichin. Since I've said that, what about a secion for local folk magazines. I'll nominate Unicorn (Beds, Herts, Bucks) anyway. :-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Mary Humphreys Date: 17 Feb 04 - 01:11 PM IanC - I second your nominations for Folk Dance and Folk Magazine. Mary |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: cloudstreet Date: 17 Feb 04 - 02:14 PM The Bedford at Sidmouth for best Pub session (during the festival of course, and it's really a hotel - do they count?). Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: elizabeth Date: 26 Feb 04 - 06:06 AM I agree it's tricky to vote when we are not familiar with each other's local clubs. I'd say it was up to the guests we have (eg the profressionals) to vote on that, but of could they are too tactful to do so. Any one of the many well-loved clubs could win if it succeeded in getting all its members to vote. I much prefer the idea of the silly alternative. Here are my votes: For a silly name coupled with being non-existant, I nominate the I nominate the Ashby-del-la-Zouche folk club as the longest-running non-existent club. The club itself folded perhaps 12 years ago, I forget the actual figure, but the Asby-de-la-Zouche away meeting is still held on the first Friday at Sidmouth each year, It is the only time the club ever meets. Kim Howells had nothing to do with it, mind, but isn't it silly?. I'd also like to second Les B's nomination for BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD.................GUIDE CATS FOR THE BLIND The CD is basically Les Barker little gems, sung or read by famous people. See Les Barker's http://www.mrsackroyd.com/ and follow the link to buy it from http://www.bcab.org.uk (bcab=British Computer Association for the Blind) love Elizabeth |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: greg stephens Date: 26 Feb 04 - 06:15 AM How about a category of Best Folk Research. I nominate Malcolm Douglas, for revising and re-issuing the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs(now published as "Classic Enlish Folk Songs"). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 26 Feb 04 - 07:04 AM Our Malcolm is indeed (if you pardon the pun) an unsung hero in his knowledge of the origins of songs etc, but greg if the title is right he's straight from the Grauniad School of Typeography |
