For me it'll be main stage all Friday night.

Saturday will be main stage all afternoon followed by Tim Edey Nand, Katie Doherty, Andrew Dinan Band (if he's who I think he is) and Eddi Reader.

Sunday is the hardest day. Afternoon will be Chris & Mark then Ian Bruce then Alie & Steve then Jo's gig. Sunday evening will be second stage all evening I think.

Decisions, decisions. I always plan these things way ahead and they NEVER work out that way.

I wonder if it was deliberate to seperate the men from the women on Friday night at Pickering. Waterboys (M), Luka Bloom (M), Johnny Dickinson (M), Steve Phillips etc (M) against Cara Dillon (F), Tiny Tin Lady (F), Chris @ Maire (50/50), Paula Ryan (F).

By the way, no booking fee here either!

The company seem to be a successful one stallion as their events are held annually so, I'm guessing, that they've done their homework. The good thing is that they're folkies!

TheLeveller an GTI have a look at the Gig List (with some other things still in negotiation) you'll see why we will probably stay local and go to the mighty Kirkby Fleetham Village Feast .........now if Saltburn (we have a promise from JT for next year)or Pickering offered my good lady a gig at either.........

GTI, Yes, Ryedale Folk Weekend (23rd-26th May) is at the Folk Museum which is an absoulutely beautiful setting and very safe for Children as it is totally enclosed.

It is £25 for the weekend and you get:

Maeve Mackinnon (Have you heard her, she sings beautifully!)
Flossie
Dave Goulder
Richard Grainger and Chris Parkinson
Adrian O
Wendy Arrowsmith
Brother Crow
Phil Drane (NZ)
Les Cameron and Barbara Helen
Jane Williamson
Four Quarters
Zeds Ded
+ others still being confirmed.

In addition many workshops (including dry stone walling, which you have to admit is different!), singarounds and sessions.

I know most of the acts (one very well indedd!) and while they might not be the biggest names nationally that is simply because we in North Yorks are selfishly keeping them secret!

See Ryedale Thread for more details.

Paul

Thanks Paul. Yeah, will definately try to get along. I see that Mrs Banjiman has a pretty busy summer with gigs. Good stuff! Beats working for a living :-) You were saying that you'd do Pickering or Saltburn if they'd offer her a gig. She's already playing that weekend though isn't she?

GREYCAP - Just picked up on yout posting. When you say "too expensive", are you referring to the Pickering Festival? If you are, I find that incredible. If you were to go along to see either of Friday's or Saturday's headliners at a theatre you'd be paying around 20 - 25 quid alone. Are you suggesting that 40 quid for 38 other acts (of sheer quality) is a rip-off? That's without mentioning everthing else that's going on. You can (physically) watch 20 concerts over the course of the weekend if you wish. That works out at 3.25 per gig. Now, I suggest that's pretty good value! If you weren't referring to Pickering then I take it all back! :-)

I guess that depends on whether you like folk music or not!

I like folk music and £40 in this day and age is cheap. However my missus would argue that she could spend the £40 in a much better way :-)

It is very reasonable and there is a lot of quality there, I am astonished that someone had the balls to gatecrash Pickering on to the folk festival map, it is hardly "from little acorns etc". My most enjoyable session this year was at KFFC Winter Warmer W/E in the singaround, stuff of legends and maybe a reprise in November, well done Banji.

Guest?
For one Pickering is a long way off the beaten track and well away from any concentrations of people, for two there are a lot of well established festivals in the vicinity, Saltburn being one and a limited amount of cash/audience to go around them all. And finally there does not appear to be a gradual building into viable event but a "go for the jugular" and book top artists. It shows that they have great faith in their marketing skills and the drawing capacity of their performers. I think it is a brave thing to do and I wish them well.

A Rock Fest Les? I don't see that at all. Friday's Rock offering is a total of one act out of eight, The Waterboys, and they're playing an acoustic gig. . Saturday has ummmmm none (assuming that Chris Difford doesn't get the rest of Squeeze to go along)! Sunday has ummmmm none! It looks to me like a very good folk festival that has, admittedly, gone for the jugular but where's the harm in that?

Why do we have to have strict demarcations on the type of artist? I wouldn't exactly call The Leveller, kd lang, Joan Armatrading or Martha Wainwright folk artists, but they're still appearing at Cambridge. You either like them or you don't.

Perhaps it should be called The Pickering Largely Folk With A Bit of Cross-Over Thrown In Festival.

I don't care if it's folk or rock. Call it what you want. It's still a brilliant lineup. Why do so many people have a strict interpretation of what is and isn't folk music?

I think that they're probably worried that 'their' folk music will be swallowed up by the obvious success of my kind of folk music. I read on here that apparently, Billy Bragg can't sing. Neither can 95% of singers that I've heard in singarounds up and down the country over the last 40 years (and when I say 95%, I'm being generous). The fact that 95% of them can't sing doesn't detract from the fact that their audience loves it. This is most peoples idea of folk music. It's (invariably) my idea of hell!

Why does (Guest the input) have to be aggressive & confrontational all the time? ( and seeing as he has decended on us suddenly & has such a lot to say why does'nt he stand up & be counted & join)?

I didn't rubbish anyone else's choice of music, the line up is just not my taste.
If anybody is interested in my idea of a good festival line up.(probably not) Then the ones that spring to mind this year are
Shepley:- Peggy Seegar, The Watersons, Bellowhead, Bella Hardy Crucible, Whapweasal, Demon Barbers, Askew Sisters, Spiers & Boden, John T & Barry C, etc (can't go dancing at Moulton, sorry Bry)
Saddleworth:-Chris W & Julie M, Nancy Kerr & James Fagin, MawkinCausley, A J Clarke, Bill Whalley & Dave Fletcher, Mary Humphries & Anahata, Flossie etc. ( I am going)
Warwick:- Bellowhead, Oysterband (i'd give them a miss), Breabach, Jez Lowe & the Bad Pennies, Mrs Ackroyd Band, Bob Fox, Rachel Unthank, The Wilsons, Roy Bailey & Tony Benn. (can't go)
Fylde:- Show of Hands( Sun). John Tams & Barry Coope (BBC Radio 2 Best Folk Duo - Fri). Tim Van Eyken Trio(Sat.). The Omega3. Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies. Nancy Kerr & James Fagan. Debby McLatchy (USA). Uiscedwr. Bernard Wrigley(Thurs). Mad Agnes(USA). Bruce Mathiske(AUS). Keith Donnelly. Askew Sisters(BBC Folk Awards Finalists). Daimh (Scot). Strawhead. Flossie(Fra). 4Square. Isambarde. Tom Topping Band. Ruth Notman Trio(BBC Folk Awards Finalist). Alan Bell Band. Brian Preston Duo. Bryony. Gary & Vera Aspey. Cross o Thands. Vicky Swann & Jonny Dyer. (i'll be there)
Shrewsbury looks good oh & Saltburn too. (both a bit too close datewise to my weeks hol in Whitby).
Like I said before we all like different things.
Cheers
Les

Confrontational and aggressive Les? I think you'll find it's simply telling it like it is and having a different opinion. I haven't 'rubbished' anything you've said. I simply differed. I'm afraid that life isn't all cosy and fluffy. There are many, many people on here that belong to the clique. Many of you seem to know each other, you (nearly) all have the same taste and opinions of exactly what folk music is. You have virtually no time for anything post-1975 and hate it when anybody comes along with their own interpretration of folk music, folk festivals and which direction THEY would like the whole folk scene to head in.

As for your choice of festivals;

Shepley - Yes
Saddleworth - No
Warwick - Yes
Fylde - Yes
Shrewsbury - Yes
Saltburn - No

My choices are;

Pickering, Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Rochester, Towersey. All of which I would go to at the drop of a hat.

Happy daze!

Like I said we all have different tastes. But please don't go around pidgeon holing people & lumping them together. I have plenty of time for post 1975 music (why 1975?) & I don't care what other people listen to & I don't feel the folk scene should head in any particular direction, it will evolve & change, as is it's nature.
Incidently life has never been "cosy & fluffy".
