Subject: thread for mudcatters on myspace? From: rhyzla Date: 10 Mar 06 - 06:14 PM Does anyone think it might be a good idea to launch a thread listing members of mudcat who have pages in myspace - performers or otherwise? If so, mine is here Barry

Subject: RE: thread for mudcatters on myspace? From: John Robinson (aka Cittern) Date: 10 Mar 06 - 07:24 PM Posted elsewhere on mudcat as well, but here it is again: www.myspace.com/julieellison Includes two free downloads (one from the CD "At Last" and one previously unreleased live track). For those with a teenage spirit, check out www.myspace.com/thehipshakes and their debut single, wot I co-produced and recorded. Cool! As we teenagers say. |

Subject: RE: thread for mudcatters on myspace? From: hesperis Date: 14 Mar 06 - 06:41 PM If you're going to sign up for myspace, they have a separate sign-up process for music members than for general blog members. The process to convert to a music membership from general membership is a hassle and deletes all your info except friends. (The link the staff gave me to convert with didn't work, someone else (not myspace staff) gave me a correct link though.) So far it does look useful as a promotion tool for music. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Jan 08 - 01:20 PM Thanks to Jed for SO much work! I had no idea there were so many actively performing Mudcatters ~ let along so many who have MySpace pages. I assume that most if not all of y'all offer some performances in audio form, and probably video too in many cases. Makes me kinda ashamed of myself not to be part of the trend. I'm well aware of how much I like to pontificate, on musical subjects as well as other BS, and it would behoove me if I were to offer some evidence that my opinion is worth something. Even though I'm only the most amateur kind of part-time performer, I'm pretty confident that I'd make a decent impression ~ assuming a certain level of taste on the part of the listener ;^) Well, maybe sometime, maybe even fairly soon. Now, I've barely begun to check out these very many links, so perhaps the question I'm about to ask has aleady been answered, at least implicitly ~ but: Will we always know the "Mudcat name" of each listed MySpacer? Only some of us (like Jed) use our real names both at Mudcat and as performers; many use fake names here on the forum and real names on the bandstand, and also some of us who post under one name (real or fake) perform under an unrelated name, as in the case of a band name. For example, I know from another reference elsewhere that "WoodPussy & Whistle Pig" features Max, our founder ~ and Jed obviously knew that as well, or he wouldn't have included them above. But for someone without that prior knowledge, is the info readily available? |

Poem cum song 5 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse: STATE TO STATE (TUNE: C F G F C F G F C F G F C F G F F G F C F G F C F G F C C F F F) From Sydney Town, In uni. break, I drove out west To earnings make Onion picking, On the fields Of Echuca, That year's yields. After day's work, From Y.H.A., A group of us Would not delay To walk on down To the dirt rim Of the Murray, For a cool swim. On one such day, I do declare, Some three of us Had a big dare To swim across, From state to state, The wide Murray - I took the bait. Yes, foolishly, I took the bait - A choice that I Would come to hate, For I almost Did drown that date, Making the swim From state to state. (C) David Franks 2003 |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 14 Aug 10 - 04:32 PM I just placed a recording of this on my MySpace profile - http://myspace.com/walkaboutsverse Poem 162 of 230: TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001 (TUNE: E F# F# E D E F# F# F# G G A B A G G D G A A B B A A F# G A B B A A-G G D D F# F# F#-G F# E E E E E E F# E D D) Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements. The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage. Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens. Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights. Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry. And, with moulding-works out that way, It's somewhere for a longer stay..? Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 11 Nov 10 - 02:13 PM I've reworked and reposted my folk-carol "Christmas Sung Simply"; the lyrics and the recording may be found via this Myspace link, and you may notice that I've done the first-half "then" in tenor voice, and the second-half "now" in counter-tenor voice (along with a tenor-recorder intro. and keyboard accompaniment). |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 11 Nov 10 - 06:19 PM Countertenor Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 11 Nov 10 - 06:47 PM Nice link, Stu - Scholl's sweet, but I'll always be a Deller man, although Bowman runs a close second! Then there was the brilliant Zeger Vandersteene who stopped singing counter-tenor for reasons of masculine integrity (or so I'm told). Anyway here's Scholl giving a damn near perfect rendering of Purcell's Here the Deities Approve. The fiddles aren't too bad either... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zwEO4r3CSE |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 12 Nov 10 - 04:11 AM WAV - in what way is that a counter-tenor? |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 12 Nov 10 - 01:47 PM Assuming you noticed the change as I start the "now" half of the track, S, I've used falsetto to produce what I think is the equivalent of a contralto - which is what I use in my hymn repertoire (again, via above link). Whereas Scholl seems to be producing a mezzo-soprano, yes..? |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 12 Nov 10 - 03:32 PM I listened to it with some interest: Section 1 - recorder bore little musical relationship with what followed. Section 2 - 'tenor' had a rattly quality Section 3 - 'counter-tenor was out of tune, but had lost the rattly quality. Wasn't counter-tenor or falsetto. This may help to explain it Scholl is a counter-tenor, not a mezzo soprano Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 12 Nov 10 - 05:02 PM I'll come back to that video, thanks, Stu, but my understanding was basically the same as this: "A countertenor is a male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of a contralto, mezzo-soprano, or (less frequently) a soprano, usually through use of falsetto, or far more rarely the normal or modal voice" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countertenor). In Section 2, by tightening muscles in my throat, I'm singing in falsetto to produce a contralto. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 12 Nov 10 - 06:50 PM By tightening muscles in your throat you did get rid of the rattle. Falsetto it's not. Listen and compare. Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 13 Nov 10 - 03:52 AM Stu's spot on there, WAV - there is no difference in register between your two voices, only one of tone &, to a certain extent diction, but even so it's hardly obvious until you point it out. There's certainly no falsetto (for an example of which see HERE). If I might be frank here (speaking as one of the only ones here who has not only voiced any appreciation for your singing at all, but openly welcome your participation in singarounds) it seems your vocal intonation comes completely unstuck when you use accompaniment. Unaccompanied such things are rather less evident, and, to a certain extent, less important, but once you've got that keyboard in there it's only effect is to highlight your wayward intonation. Given both the modal quality of your chants and your fondness for E. trads, my advice would be to try singing against a drone - but practise first by singing scales, modes & intervals. Once you've got your 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and 8ves sorted you should find things a lot easier. Also, purely as a excercise, try singing whilst playing the recorder - something many flautists do as part of their sound (such as Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull (who nicked his entire flute act from Rahsaan Roland Kirk who pioneered such techniques). I'm not suggesting you make this part of your performance, but it might help improve your intonations generally, and get your voice in tune with your flute when you use it for preludes. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 13 Nov 10 - 03:55 AM Bum. Never mind. But seeing this is a Myspace music thread, check out the Crwth Raga currently playing on my Myspace Page... |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 13 Nov 10 - 04:31 AM Lovely piece Sean. Is it on the crwth alone? There seems to be a separate underlying drone. Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 13 Nov 10 - 05:43 AM Cheers, Stu. I've got this wee sythesiser thing - a Korg Kaossilator, which replaces the keyboard with a mode-friendly dynamic X-Y pad - for live loops beats & drones. The crwth & kaossilator were recorded in real time, and I added the bass ostinato afterwards. Here's a visual demonstration on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MynD0nTYWfc |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 13 Nov 10 - 06:55 AM Thanks for that - interesting and musical. I think you're right that WAV would benefit from a drone type accompaniment with his chants. Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 13 Nov 10 - 07:42 AM I'll bear that feedback/criticism in mind but also the confusion within, such as this: "recorder bore little musical relationship with what followed." (Stu)...but following the tune (as an intro.) on the recorder is the very same tune (doubling the melody, as an accompaniment) on the keyboards; so, unless they've been mass produced way out of tune, it's immpossible for that to be so. And, S., last I heard (from yourself) you couldn't read or write music, but you now post as if you do...have you learn't to do so the last few months? And, as I've said before, given my decision to accompany by doubling the melody (here), I shall, as you both suggest, keep working on intonation (and keep the tunes in my repertoire committed to memory) by playing a line/singing a line/playing a line, with both recorder and keys - rather than going through scales. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: s&r Date: 13 Nov 10 - 12:35 PM David - it's difficult to guess at the time signature because of the breathing pause at the end of each line, but the tempo of the recorder is about 1 1/2 times the tempo of what follows. This stops any musical continuity. The notes on your recorder are reasonably accurate, but your vocal intonation is not there yet, so the tune sounds different. It might be worth while studying breath control ie short breath intake followed by controlled release. Players of wind instruments usually pinch a bit from the length of an adjacent note to snatch a breath, as do singers when necessary. I have had pupils in the past who have had difficulty with pitching, where they sing a bit harder instead of higher. Your persistence ought to pay off and I wish you well with it. Just by the way I saw nothing about music reading in Sean's post: I do know he has an understanding of many aspects of music theory and performance that is rarely found. Stu |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 13 Nov 10 - 01:02 PM I agree, Stu, that, ideally, the time I take per line should be the same for singing and playing my flute, and I can check on Audacity - which I haven't done for a couple of years. Having admitted that, my recorder intros at singarounds don't seem to have discouraged group singing. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: Jack Blandiver Date: 13 Nov 10 - 04:30 PM For the record, WAV - I have a thorough grounding in musical theory from Pythagoras to Harry Partch (and even a music O-level!). In practical terms I'm working with musical theory the whole time - be it musical improvisation, musique concrete, the singing (and researching) of traditional song and the vexing business of keeping my various fiddles & zithers in tune - which involves Concert Pitch, Eastern (Military) Pitch, and in the case of my Ango-Norman harp (hear it on Names of the Hare HERE) building up an Ionian (major) mode from a given tonic by using 4ths, 5ths and 8ves. Such things are second nature to me; hell, I can even hear the difference between a perfect 3rd and a tempered 3rd (Harry Partch split the 8ve into 43 divisions to realise this - start HERE). That said, anyone with even the most casual acquaintance with music (theoretical & otherwise) would wince at your voice / keyboard efforts; I still have nightmares about your crucifying of Wondrous Cross, though Xmas Sung Simply runs it a close second. I've no problem with the E.Trads and unaccompanied chants though. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 27 Aug 11 - 11:21 AM Do people still use Myspace? I tried to update the Fleetwood Folk Club page last night - all the designs and links were all to hell, and all my previous 'hard work' (hem, hem) lost forever. I made the changes though, but I've no idea if it'll work or not. Used to like Myspace too... now it's dreadful. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: Suegorgeous Date: 27 Aug 11 - 03:20 PM I don't... mine still sits there, in a mess and utter chaos, and from time to time I peep at it and run away in horror and fear... One of my urgent autumn tasks is to sort out a decent new page on Bandcamp, Reverbnation, Facebook..... anywhere but Myspace... :) |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 27 Aug 11 - 04:09 PM Try Soundcloud: more music & less sycophancy! |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 27 Aug 11 - 05:37 PM ...or one of the other wealthy American companies, Google, is now trialling a new social-networking site..? With just a level 1 computer certificate and Windows 7 Starter, I sorted out the new myspace system in a couple of hours (above link), but certainly found it more complex and demanding than the old. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 27 Aug 11 - 05:52 PM WAV - I couldn't even sort it with a forklift certificate and a rained-off linguistics degree. Besides, they'll only find some way to mess it up again so why bother? Soundcloud is nice; Facebook is gentle, but real life is best... |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 28 Aug 11 - 05:01 AM Didn't know you were a fellow forklifter, S! That Fleetwood Myspace page was good in my opinion. "Why bother?"...well, if we do want as many folks as possible to check our work, we have to go beyond "real life" I suppose. There's a good one funded by the English Arts Council, although it's mainly for poetry - e.g., http://www.writeoutloud.net/profiles/davidfrankswalkaboutsverse |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Dec 11 - 05:34 AM In case you have'nt noticed, there is one good development on MySpace: the new radio (including folk radio) function; e.g., from here - http://www.myspace.com/walkaboutsverse - click on "All" then "Radio" or "Folk" radio. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 27 Dec 11 - 01:57 PM ...and now folks can link directly to it, e.g. - http://www.myspace.com/walkaboutsverse/radio ...anyone tempted back..? |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: Tootler Date: 27 Dec 11 - 04:34 PM Not really. It looks like you are still restricted on the number of uploads you can have and there is still the same messy interface. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: Tootler Date: 27 Dec 11 - 05:02 PM As Suibhne said, Soundlcloud is much better. It still restricts you but by time and two hours allows quite a lot of tracks. You can get more by paying but I imagine you can get round that by creating multiple accounts with different email addresses. Reverbnation seems to be growing in popularity, so I might investigate that. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: GUEST,999 Date: 27 Dec 11 - 06:02 PM MySpace f##ked up big time. I no longer trust them and that's that. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music on Myspace From: Suegorgeous Date: 28 Dec 11 - 02:17 PM But I hear that on Soundcloud there's little or no profile option? which is why I've gone with Reverbnation and Facebook - and if you set up Reverbnation first (pretty easy), you can link your FB profile to it, so that any changes you later make to RN will update automatically on FB. |
