Subject: Upton FF 2004 From: alanww Date: 05 Apr 04 - 02:21 PM I cannot make the Mudcat Eurogathering 2004 - May 1st-3rd, as I am committed to performing at Upton Folk Festival. Who else is going to Upton? I shall be singing with the Shellback Chorus (but not dancing with Tarka Morris Men as I did last year as unfortunately they cannot raise a team). I usually go to the White Lion for the singing in between Shellback stuff but this time I may go to a music session or two. Which are the best pubs for music sessions, preferably with mostly English music? "Abroad for pleasure ...!" Alan |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Emma B Date: 05 Apr 04 - 02:27 PM I will be stewarding again - when I'm not in the White Lion. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Leadfingers Date: 05 Apr 04 - 02:41 PM Last year there was some good stuff in the ? Kings Head ? By the river on your left looking at the river . Thats where I spent most of my time last year mate.Wont be there this year as I am in Liverpool doing a Banquet! But Maidenhead Folk Club are there again . |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Hawker Date: 05 Apr 04 - 03:39 PM KB, Me and the girlies were thinking of going, perhaps you can tell me all about it at Miskin Guru? Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: vectis Date: 05 Apr 04 - 06:36 PM Travelling Folk will be there again this year. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Col K Date: 05 Apr 04 - 06:58 PM I will be there as well. Advance warning for all, Upton Bridge is closed for heavy and wide vehicles, the limit is 3 tons and 2 metres wide ie CARS only, Caravans and Camper vans will have to find alternative route. I will post details nearer to the time |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Snuffy Date: 05 Apr 04 - 07:19 PM THE place for unaccompanied singing is the White Lion. (And the Rugby club after hours while the beer lasts!) Last year the Star had mixed/accompanied singing, as did the Muggery. The nearer the river you get, the more likely you are to have morris/Irish instrumental sessions. Emma, Lucy, Hils, Mary - see you all in the Lion at sometime over the weekend |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: GUEST Date: 06 Apr 04 - 08:06 AM Col K - thanx for the warning about the bridge. Bet that catches a few people out ! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Folkie Date: 06 Apr 04 - 08:14 AM English music sessions are usually in the King's Head or on the riverfront if the weather is kind. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: My guru always said Date: 06 Apr 04 - 05:01 PM See you in the White Lion Snuffy - but see you at Miskin first surely..... |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Snuffy Date: 06 Apr 04 - 06:54 PM Indeed, Hil. Just a few days now. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Phot Date: 07 Apr 04 - 06:44 PM I've never been to this one before, but if work isnt getting in the way too much, I may just give it a try. Wassail! Chris |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Leadfingers Date: 07 Apr 04 - 07:18 PM Its a nice one Chris/Phot - Shame I cant make it as I am in Liverpool earning pennies |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: JudeL Date: 08 Apr 04 - 08:52 AM John Henry & I will be there. We are both first aiding. Is the White Lion that pub with the long thin bar that very quickly got very smokey? |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: alanww Date: 13 Apr 04 - 08:43 PM JudeL: yes! Further (inconclusive) news on the Bridge! As Col K said there will be a restriction ... I heard a recent local radio programme suggest that there will be a width restriction of 2.25 metres (or 7 foot 4 inches) ... But then again, I drove past an access point to it today and it said that the restriction was for 6 feet (or 1.83 metres) ... Well, as my just-about-to-be-acquired motor home will be 6 foot 8 inches that leaves me in a bit of a quandry! Although there is nothing on the AA Traffic News website as yet, no doubt there will be very specific details nearer the time. Anyway, I will post any further local details I get, if I get them before Col K ... "Abroad for pleasure ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: GUEST,croc Date: 14 Apr 04 - 07:31 PM white lion is fun but gets very loud and smokey - is ther a quieter venue? |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Col K Date: 14 Apr 04 - 07:35 PM refresh |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Snuffy Date: 15 Apr 04 - 08:17 AM All the pubs in Upton seem to welcome singers/musicians. The Muggery often has a mixed sing/play, and Alhambra have been known to lead SARs at the Star. But the basic rule at Upton seems to be: if you can't find the sort of session you want - Start One! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: GUEST,alanww Date: 19 Apr 04 - 07:15 AM The latest on the bridge restriction: As I was passing along the A38 today, there were roadsigns saying "Diversion for 3T vehicles and for vehicles wider than 2.25 metres (7 feet 4 inches) ... So at least the roadsigns now say the same thing as the radio broadcasts! Looking forward to it - its only 11 days away! I think I might get there on the Thursday: presumably there will be a session somewhere for the advance guard of stewards? "... as I was a-walking!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: the lemonade lady Date: 19 Apr 04 - 12:42 PM EEk... not long now. My trailer is being touched up! The paint started to peel from the heavy rain at Warwick last year. It will be wonderful to out there again after the long winter. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again. Schantie is coming for the Friday night and some of Saturday. Hopefully we'll get a few songs in at the White Lion and in the folk Club. Hey Snuffy and AllanWW, wasn't the Malt shovel a good day yesterday? It was fun getting the 'dogs' out for the day! I got disoriented, I thought I was at a festival already. Sal |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: COINWOLF Date: 21 Apr 04 - 04:22 PM Repeat message regarding the Bridge at Upton This year there is a big problem with the Bridge at Upton. It cannot take heavy or large vehicles, so the Highways people have restricted the traffic over the bridge to cars only. It has a one way system with traffic lights, so even if you can get through the width restriction, there are likely to be queues. The best thing to do is to avoid coming off the junction on the A38 to Upton, and cross the river either at Worcester (If you are coming from the NORTH) or at Tewkesbury, at the Mythe Bridge(if you are coming from the South). Take at a look at the map first, bearing in mind the obvious route using the A38 and the Upton bridge is not an option). Cars with caravans are advised not to try to get over the bridge, as the width restriction is very tight, and there are concrete walls in place to stop wider/ higher vehicles. |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Schantieman Date: 29 Apr 04 - 05:36 AM I fear that I shall not be there after all. I REALLY need some sleep and I have to drive to the big smoke on Saturday anyway for a family do on Sunday. Rather be at Upton. Have fun all - and good singing! Steve |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Apr 04 - 02:35 PM Can't get there this year (sob, cry). Schantieman - when you say "the big smoke", did you notice the press reports that a house in Stanmore was struck by lightning in the thunderstorm on Tuesday, and caught fire? Kitty |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Zany Mouse Date: 29 Apr 04 - 06:24 PM It looks as if we aren't going now. Boo hoo. Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Apr 04 - 12:55 PM Oh Snuffy - nothing at all. I only wish we were going but Mick is recovering from a heavy cold. Can't you hear my sobs? Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: vectis Date: 03 May 04 - 03:45 PM Back tired and hoarse; no accidents this time. I had a great time and enjoyed some super sings. Met loads of 'catters. Looking forward to next year already. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: 8_Pints Date: 03 May 04 - 07:18 PM Thanks to Pauline and friends from the Wooden Horse, Rainford for their hospitality and convivial company. Shared their Bar-B-Q and many songs on Saturday evening. Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: COINWOLF Date: 05 May 04 - 03:23 PM A big thank you to everyone who helped with the Festival. The campsite stewards and task force in particular contributed a great deal to the success of the event. We would also like to thank in particular several unsung heroswho helped out with their 4 * 4's on the campsite .(The last time it rained like that we had three years of festivals with brilliant weather.) Also the festival helped the town at a time when businesses were starting to be badly affected by the width and height restrictions on the Upton Bridge. (There are plans of the repair scheme shown on the main Upton site). Hope you all got home safely. 2005 here we come. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Snuffy Date: 05 May 04 - 07:00 PM Excellent as usual |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: the lemonade lady Date: 07 May 04 - 07:40 AM Yet again a well organised festival. Well done to all concerned. Now if you can just make sure that the sun does shine next year, Coinwolf, I'd be smiling! "I wish I were a turtle dove......." Sal |
Subject: RE: Upton FF 2004 From: Hovering Bob Date: 07 May 04 - 05:54 PM Lovely festival, we had a great time, until Helen got a migraine. Finney ('Racing name 'Finane Wind') enjoyed herself, especially meeting the other greyhounds on the site (you could almost see her perk up as she met 'proper dogs') Maidenhead were there in force and the shared 'Folk Club' was one of the best sessions of its type that I've been to in years. Enjoyed several of the concerts and the general atmosphere was great. Well done to all concerned. |
