Subject: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 20 Nov 07 - 01:46 PM We have to go back to the early 1970s for this one. This was a time when the Alaska pipeline from Valdez to Prudhoe Bay was coming on line. I am not sure but I think that it was Exon who aired a television commercial showing one of their super-tankers in Alaskan waters. The Clancy Brothers were singing this commercial song entitled "Bringing Home The Oil". The words may have been written by Exon but the tune was clearly "The Gallant Forty TWA". If anybody remembers this I would like to get the words to that commercial. SOL |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 20 Nov 07 - 03:18 PM Thank you Jim. According to this website it was Gulf and not Exon that ran the commercial and the ship was the tanker Universe Ireland. We have the chorus here but we still need all the stanzas since the song was 2 minutes long. The title of the song is "BRINGING HOME THE OIL" Here is the chorus, (Tune: same as "The Gallant Forty TWA") Bringing home the oil, me boys Bringing home the oil Sailin' all around the world Bringing home the oil A workin on a giant ship It's very hard we toil Sailin in to Bantry Bay Bringin home the oil Can anyone please supply the verses. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: Cool Beans Date: 21 Nov 07 - 12:54 PM The Clancys sang anotehr Gulf commercial, too, for Gulf's detergent gasoline. "We're the rocker arm assembly; we don't like dirt...but Gulf detergent gasoline keeps us running smooth and clean" (It's a car part.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 21 Nov 07 - 03:05 PM I have a slow dial up connection to the internet and can not access You Tube. Can someone please post the lyrics on this thread or e-mail the song in MP3 form (from the video) to me at solz@att.net ? TIA SOL |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brother From: GUEST,aduckmasters Date: 22 Nov 07 - 10:44 AM I distinctly remember this commercial from having recorded some Apollo moon shots on cassette tape (microphone in front of the TV speaker) in the early 1970s when I was a teen...I had not heard the audio of this song since that time period until I discovered it again on YouTube...every time I think of that song, it reminds me of the moon shot telecasts |
Subject: Lyr Add: BRINGING HOME THE OIL (Clancy Brothers) From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Nov 07 - 05:12 PM Wikipedia has a set of lyrics in its article on Gulf Oil. I copied them and made a few corrections based on how I hear it. I'm very doubtful about the phrase "as graceful". BRINGING HOME THE OIL The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem 1. I'm an able-bodied sailor and I've often crossed the line, On whalin' ships and sailin' ships and ships of every kind; But now I've got the very best job I've had for many a day. I'm workin' on a tanker bringin' oil to Bantry Bay. CHORUS: Hey! Bringin' home the oil, me boys, bringin' home the oil! Sailin' all around the world, bringin' home the oil! A-workin' on a giant ship, it's very hard we toil, Sailin' into Bantry Bay, bringin' home the oil! 2. She is the biggest ship, me lads, that ever sailed the sea. As graceful (?) as a swan she goes; we sail her at our ease. From Araby around Cape Hope we proudly make our way, To keep all Europe movin' from our base in Bantry Bay. CHORUS 3. They're building other tankers now to speed more oil to you, The Universe Kuwait, me lads, Japan and Portugal, too. Also the Universe Ireland, I'm very proud to say, Is among the giant ships that's bringin' oil to Bantry Bay. CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brother From: T in Oklahoma (Okiemockbird) Date: 08 Jun 08 - 12:17 AM The video is not as I remember it. The commercial I remember ended with a high overhead shot of a tanker in port. Also, the video I remember seeing wasn't as slipshod as in the You-tube clip. There were no fishing poles to be seen. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 08 Jun 08 - 01:02 PM The person who posted the video on Youtube clearly stated that this was NOT the original but his best try at recreating what he remembered from many years ago. SOL |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil Commercial Song by Clancy Brothers From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 08 Jun 08 - 06:11 PM I had the foresight to write down the words (in 1969, I think), and they're identical to what's posted above, except for "seas" to rhyme with "ease." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil commercial song (Clancy Brothers) From: GUEST,Mike Date: 16 Sep 08 - 06:14 PM Here is another you tube (no video, but the music is much, much, clearer :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQZLde4tL8g&feature=related By the way, I too remember seeing this commercial so many years ago. However, being only about 10 in 1969, and not knowing much Irish music, I thought it was based on something like "Bringing in the Sheaves" or "Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech", lol. Just love the song, and hearing it now kind of brings tears to me eyes. Also, enven though the images in the video aren't from the commercial, seeing images of how huge ships like ULCC's roll in the seas truly relates the power of the oceans! Mike |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil commercial song (Clancy Brothers) From: Stringsinger Date: 17 Sep 08 - 01:18 PM I knew the Clancys and Tommy personally. I think they might be embarrassed today. They were sucked in by Exxon. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil commercial song (Clancy Brothers) From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 09 - 01:45 AM The song "We're the rocker arm assembly," was for Mobil; not Gulf. The animated valves sang in an irish brogue. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oil commercial song (Clancy Brothers) From: autoharper Date: 03 Aug 09 - 06:17 AM Commercials are among the best paying jobs for professional musicians. Jack Elliot did a commercial for Wells Fargo that is still running 25 years later, and probably still paying residual royalties. I sincerely doubt that anyone involved was "suckered". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bringing Home the Oil (Clancy Brothers) From: sciencegeek Date: 25 Jun 24 - 09:55 AM Bit 'o history here: the earliest songs of oil were from the whaling trade lol that went on about the toils of the trade onboard ship during long voyages followed by the happy town when the ships returned. The development of oil drilling along with dwindling whale populations served to put an end to most of the whaling trade, though fast steamers and the explosive harpoon gun were used for the Southern ocean whaling trade that involved chasing down the fast whales that were processed on large factory ships... look up Harry Robertson's Whale Chasing Men album ... where the oil was used to make margarine and meat into meal. Offshore drilling rigs were set up around the world as well, and tragic events were chronicled in both song and film. Sailing barge captain, Bob Roberts, had a delightful recitation, the Oily Rig, on his album, Songs from the Sailing Barges. As much fun as any of Ruth Moore's work IMHO |
Subject: RE: ADD: Bringing Home the Oil (Clancy Brothers) From: GUEST,Joe Tomrud Date: 02 Jul 24 - 08:47 AM Sailin' into Bantry Bay, bringin' home the oil! indeed... In 1979 a tanker called The Betelgeuse (sp) blew up at the Whiddy Island oil storage depot in Bantry Bay, in County Cork, killing fifty people. No songs about that, I suppose ... |
