I'm a newbie here, recently signed up looking for information about my dad, Jody Gibson, known here at Mudcat as "Cranky Yankee". He tried to get me to check out Mudcat for years. I'm glad I finally caught on. I am missing him terribly and was hoping some of you might have some stories about my dad - gigs you might have gone to or capers you might have gone on. I am hoping there might be some folks here who might have known him when we lived in England or California. I'd be happy for anything you can share. It has been a long time, but I remember very clearly the first time I met your father. It was in Providence Rhode Island, and after mentioning an interest in sea chanteys, someone in a coffee house where I occasionaly performed told me that I needed to talk to Jody Gibson. They then introduced me to you. Apparently, you must have arranged for him to come to the coffee house one night when I was playing. At that point my interest in the songs of the sea was largely academic, having never been under sail other than in a steel hulled APA (Troop Transport). Suddenly, while tuning my guitar, there was this tall fellow obstructing my light. It had been raining, and there, standing before me in a Pea Coat and tarpaulin hat, with the rain dripping down, stood your father. He had stern features, and with his pipe clenched in his teeth, hands in the pockets of his pea coat, he inquired bluntly "You lookin' fer me?" Once I recovered from the shock of this initial meeting, I announced that I would be taking a break and we had a great chat about the music over coffee. I told him of my interest and mentioned a number of books on the subject which I had referenced. One of them, Joanna Colcord's, drew the reaction "JOANNA COLCORD DOESN'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT SEA CHANTEYS!" She soon found her way back to the library shelves, from thereon sentenced to the file "irrelevant". Soon to join her was Doerflinger and another which I cannot recall. In short, your father became a mentor of sorts, and we met more than a few times to talk about music and share songs. He was a special man and he could deliver a song like few that I have known. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I so would have wanted to share with him my appreciation and to show him how far I had come in this journey of nautical music upon which he had sent me back in the early seventies. He made sure I had the right charts and instruments, cast off my linesand pushed me out into deeper water. He has a lot to do with why I sing these songs. Another scene I vaguely remember was when you were performing in this coffe house of which I spoke, singing and playing a most moving song with the dulcimer. I remember your young passenger,( you were with child at the time) apparently being taken with the music, started to kick, and the instrument flew off your lap into the arms of someone sitting in the first row.Am I exagerating, or did that actually happen? If you can, come see us at Portsmouth. I would love to see you again and dedicate a song or two to your father. I remember you having a wonderful presence. I rarely travel out of my little town never mind out of Rhode Island. If I made it to Portsmouth and you were playing, I definitely would check it out. I'm glad that you got so much out of your encounters with Jody. Your account made me LOL... thanks. I wish I remembered the incident you described above. Fact is I've forgotten much of my own life due to 23 years of neurological Lyme disease. There are big chunks missing -others are crystal clear. It's very strange. I do remember that the maiden voyage of the HMS rose from Nova Scotia (Lunenberg) was glorious. I remember we were singing the song "Wooden Ships" from the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album as we sailed past the beaches in Newport, RI. where people were lined up by the thousands to see the lovely sight of a square rigged, three masted frigate under full sail. Noone had see anything like that around these parts for a long time. The last time I saw the H.M.S. Rose she had been horribly altered for the movie, "Master and Commander". I had heard that the original plan was to blow the ship up for the film. I believe there were enough folks speaking out about that plan that the ship is now once again a museum someplace. I'm sure a google search would turn up her current whereabouts. I lived my 16th summer on Rosie. Dad was the botswain, I was the cook. That was until the poor crew organized an intervention in the kitchen where I was cooking up yet another box of macaroni and cheese. I'll never forget how grateful those guys looked as they were munching away on fried chicken provided by the second mate who had been a real ship's cook in the Navy. I may not have been good with the vittles but I sure could climb the rigging and unfurl the penants from up in the crows' nest. Hadn't thought about that in a while. I always knew you would be great whenever I listened to you back in the day. How old were you back then? That was 1970. I had just gotten out of the Navy and was trying to lose myself in my music and forget about Nam, just bummin'around the country with my guitar and banjo. Tried to work in a respectable job while in Providence for a short time, then headed south. The coffee-house I mentioned was run by a Minister and it was downtown adjacent to a restaurant/bar that apparently had ties to organized crime. I remember being on the stage one night when two guys in shiny suits and slicked back hair(this is UNDERCOVER?) came racing through the back door and out our front door. Shortly after, we heard shots fired and of course the arrival of the police. Someone remarked "Just another day in downtown Providence". But getting back to your singing, many thoughts were running through my mind as I listened to your most profoundly spiritual presentation. First, you are a credit to your father and most certainly a credit to Malvina Reynolds who must have had a considerable influence on your spiritual journey. I was thinking how she and your father must be above, smiling , she saying to him "You done good, Jody!" And I have to say, hearing your blues numbers, Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton are saying the same thing. I sang for awhile in D.C. with a woman who had a voice and style like yours, and at one point I just couldn't do it anymore because it hurt when she sang with me. The emotional intensity that would erupt actually brought about physical pain. I had a lot to process back then and instead of dealing with it I just kept pickin' and drinkin'and movin'. Your blues style is quite powerful and it comes through a voice that reflects the power of woman; the power of Eros; the power of Creation. Secondly, your "If I Were God" should be played on every station and in every church. I have a Master's in Theology, and I have never heard a statement so clearly put regarding the nature of God, which is not to be confused with what is popularly accepted as human nature, a term which needs to be revised. You can really break down all of the barriers with that song. Well, Joyce, I can go on and on. We have to sit down for a talk sometime. The one time I visited her, one of those pirate movies had just come out, so there was pirate exhibit in the hold. It didn't seem entirely dignified. She does have her own blog, where it looks like there are some who have put her to good use, although it doesn't seem she gets out much (last post was from over a year ago). Thank you Azizi for the nice plug and the hyperlink. I don't know how to do that. Open Mike: Thanks for the tip on finding my Dad's threads. Thanks also for checking out my music. I did give credit to Si Kahn, Peggy Seeger, Malvina Reynolds and Donna Gibson for their songs. Unfortunately the box on Myspace cuts it short. If you check on the "lyrics" for more information, I give all credits. Ditto for any of the other songs I put up there that I didn't write myself. I am not thrilled about using myspace but I am fairly isolated these days due to chronic health issues (blah, blah, blah). I don't perform out of Rhode Island much and the internet at least allows me to share my music. Songs I did write: If I Were God, The Glorious Plan, What Makes Johnny So Mean?, A Lullaby in War Time, Not Another Mother's Son/Not Another Father's Daughter. My step-mother, Donna Gibson (a mighty fine songwriter and singer in her own write ;-)) wrote Just like a Man and Jimmy and the Preacher. Haddocker: The coffeehouse you are describing was "The Mouthpiece" and was run by two ministers, Stan _____ and Bill Brown, a fabulous blues player who I lost track of years ago. The Mouthpiece started out in a building at One Benefit St. in Providence, moved to South Main St. to a building that once stood where the Roger Williams Memorial Park is now, and then it moved to Snow St. where it resided among the X-rated Bookstores and other fringy elements. That's where it was when you played in 1970. I was 16-17 then. I'm glad that you had your music to accompany you and heal you on your journey. I know how it can be to have a song break you apart. After Jody passed away in 2005, my brother, Dave "the singing fisherman" Katzberg died in January of 2007. Dave and Jody played together frequently at the annual "Fiddlers and Fishermen" concert in Portsmouth, RI and at the weekly open mike at Billy Goodes' Tavern in Newport, RI. Dave was a Harley riding, deep sea fisherman, catching "bugs" in the Georges Banks. He was quite a songwriter and was possessed of a slightly twisted sense of humor. Dave died of leukemia and left the world at 44 before he could record his songs: Jesus was a Zombie, Mark of the Devil, I Was In A Bar Last Night (to the tune of starry, starry night) and These Are The Reasons Ted Kennedy Drinks (to the tune of My Favorite Things)- just to name a few of his favorites. He knew more verses to the "Hitler only had one ball" song than anybody in the world. There will never be another like him. My sister, Kate Katzberg is alive and well and can be found at www.myspace.com/katekatzberg She has a couple of her original compositions up there. Kate has been playing with a new band "The Naybobs" featuring Steve Jobe on viola, guitar and hurdy gurdy,Bob Asperinio on bass and mandolin and Winnie Lambrecht on hand held percussion. Kate plays guitar and sings. Their repertoire is quite eclectic with everything from 16th century ballads to Buck Owens to Kate's originals.I do believe that my sister is the second funniest person I have ever seen on stage - next to Lucille Ball. She used to be part of a duo called "Katzberg and Snyder" that reigned as numero uno favorite folky band around Rhode Island in the 80's, early nineties before Kate and Steve Snyder broke up their 18 year musical partnership. Steve went on to work for WGBH Boston Public Radio helping to produce "The World" and "Sound and the Spirit". Kate and I also have a half sister named Laurie. Laurie and her father, Fremont could whistle and sing very nicely but were never professional entertainers. Jody has grandchildren: My daughter, Emma is a dancer - teaching and competing in various styles of swing dance. Got her start with Ceilidh and Ballet - She can sing but won't. She also knows her stuff about vitamins and herbs and all things healthy. My son, Tom is a letter carrier by day and a disc jockey by night. We just gave him Dave's guitar to learn on. Who knows where that will lead? Kate's daughter Amelia is already a promising performer possessing her mother's dry wit and a rather nice flair with the fiddle. Son Noah is an athletic ball of energy that nobody can quite fill up. Now you are up to speed with what Jody used to refer to as his "offspring". springing off now, Joyce |

Once I've found the URL {by using Google or some other search engine}, I highlight it {run the mouse over it until it turns blue} 2. I then click on "Copy" {which is found in the Edit feature, right next to "File" on the top left hand side of the screen] 3. Then I click on "Make A Blue Clicky" that is found underneath this box on the right hand side] 4. Instructions will appear. I follow the instructions, which will tell me to paste the URL in the box that appears..."Paste" is found the same "Edit" feature as "Copy". 5. If you want to show the website's address, then hit "submit", and the hyperlink will appear. If you want to go with a word such as "here" or the title of the website you are linking to, or some other words or phrases, write that and then click "submit". 6. I usually check to see if it's working before going to the next step. 7. When you are ready to "Copy" the URL that appears at the end of the instruction steps, make sure that you copy the entire thing and don't miss the signs at the beginning and the end that look like greater and lesser mathmatical signs < and >. I make a lot of mistakes with those HTML commands because I forget to check the those whateverthey're called that look like greater than and less than math symbols. But it's no big deal if mistakes are made. True, people may read your posts ten years or more from now, and say "Aha! There's another mistake. That lady never proof reads her posts (I do but I still can't see some errors). But as the hip hoppers say "It's all good". She continues to perform occasionally in RI, and a month or so ago I started a thread to let people know she would be in Portsmouth, NH. Her next gig will be here: http://www.pawtucketartsfestival.org/events/September/11/2011/slater-mill-labor-and-ethnic-heritage-fectival-and-stone-soup-folk Bill Harley will be there, too: coincidence because someone recently copied some of his lyrics into the thread about bats. Joyce is very active in Peace and Social Justice causes, and the chronic health problems she wrote about continue to affect her. I go to her concerts as often as I can and am in contact with her. Joyce told me about Mudcat, and I just stumbled across this thread while looking for something else. |
