Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 30 Aug 11 - 02:41 AM I sat in on a jam at the Colorado Midwinter Bluegrass Festival last February, and there was a grizzled, skinny elderly gentleman in a Wyoming Cowboys baseball cap playing a pretty hot fiddle. Someone asked him if he knew a certain song, and he replied "I'm not sure how it goes, but I know how it went." That cracked everybody up, and the phrase stuck with me. Anyhow, I turned it into a song dedicated to all the old timers who blazed the old bluegrass trail, and I hope y'all like it. How It Went |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Oct 11 - 07:07 PM I uploaded How It Went to Soundclick and it has moved up to #13 on the Country/Bluegrass Chart. If some of you good folks out there could take a minute, just click here, scroll down to the song, give it a listen and rate it 5 stars (or 4 or 3 or...hey c'mon!)and lets see if we can push 'er up to number one! Hoping for some positive Mudcat power here! Love you all! LEJ |

Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 12:33 AM This is one I wrote a few years back, and one I do with my Blues-Rock band. I like to introduce it by saying "this is one Buddy Holly might have written if he'd survived long enough to become a cynic". Hey, it 50s-style rock, and all in good fun... Hey Baby |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Janie Date: 14 Nov 11 - 05:40 AM Nice one! Also, just want to comment on how well the slide shows are always done. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Allan C. Date: 14 Nov 11 - 05:45 AM I was just now thinking of when I first met you and how reticent you were with regard to playing and/or singing. All I can say is: Goodonya!! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 11:20 AM Yes, Allen. I've never really been shy, but feel a bit more confident on my solo stuff now. And thanks, Janie, the slide shows are fun to do, and make you think about the real meaning of the song. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 11:26 AM Here is a video of my song on the "Until the Dark Time Ends" CD. If you have heard the cut on the CD, you may notice this is a slightly different take on it. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Amos Date: 14 Nov 11 - 12:01 PM I like Hey, Baby a whole lot, Ernie; shades of Buddy Holly. You and Peace should work something up together! A |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: gnu Date: 14 Nov 11 - 02:34 PM "but feel a bit more confident on my solo stuff now" NO WONDER! As usual... |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Nov 11 - 02:56 PM Ernie, I love it. Man, you have a great ear for both arrangement and 'sound'. Thank you for posting these links. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 03:18 PM Don't worry, when I get signed by a major label and can hire musicians for the US Tour, you guys all get a seat on the bus. And all the PBR you can drink and Kentucky fried chicken you can eat, any time you want some. And Amos can play while we're rollin. I'm sure that kind of livin could take at least 5 years off of our average life expectancies, but talk about F-U-N! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 05:00 PM Wow. How old is "God rest Ye Merry gentlemen"? Just received notice of a possible copyright issue. Apparently some rights to this ancient song belong to Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society. In the words of Michael Stipe "buy the sky and sell the sky". |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Janie Date: 14 Nov 11 - 10:18 PM You're kidding?!! (Which was probably your first thought when you received the notice?) |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Nov 11 - 10:31 PM Tell them to get stuffed. Just say you did an arrangement of an older version, Ernie. Ain't NO copyright judge in the world gonna mess with that. I bet you're older than the copyright. Fuck 'em! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 10:39 PM Well, by God, I agree 3x9! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Nov 11 - 10:57 PM "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen (also known as God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen) is an English traditional Christmas carol. The melody is in Aeolian mode. It was published by William B. Sandys in 1833, although the author is unknown.[1]" Read you 5 X 5 good buddy. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Nov 11 - 11:04 PM In fact, I will do my best to get a take of GRYMG onto Youtube real soon, and the MFs can send me the notice, too. The Aeolian mode predates copyright by at least two thousand years. Let them explain THAT to a judge! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 14 Nov 11 - 11:23 PM when you do, post it here wouldja? |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: GUEST,999 Date: 15 Nov 11 - 10:12 AM Didn't mention: that's a neat arrangement of GRYMG. I have some medical stuff to deal with, and after that I'll be able to ger 'er done. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 26 Nov 11 - 03:10 PM Moonshiner The traditional song, this follows the Uncle Tupelo arrangement. |

Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 28 Nov 11 - 12:09 AM From the Preston Drive-in south of Louisville Kentucky, you could see a big rock outcropping on a ridge nearby. This was called Devil's Backbone, and it would catch the last rays of sun going down before the movie started. The name caught my interest at the age of 12, a connotation that bad things might happen up there, or had happened. Anyway, this song is about a love affair gone wrong. The Devil's Backbone |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 05 Dec 11 - 12:06 AM Dangerously close to rock and roll on this one... Long Time |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: gnu Date: 05 Dec 11 - 01:35 PM Love em. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Janie Date: 05 Dec 11 - 09:20 PM Ernie, maybe it is my 'puter, but I don't think so - I couldn't get the volume up enough to really hear the song well. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Janie Date: 05 Dec 11 - 09:29 PM ditto Devil's Backbone. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 06 Dec 11 - 01:29 AM It has to be turned up fairly loud on mine, but sounds pretty good through my speakers, Janie. I know the file plays well through my car stereo and home stereo. Let me know and I can send the file and you can knock it off to CD, or I could just send a CD. I really like the electric guitar on Long Time. With all of the acoustic instruments, I wasn't sure how a Fender Strat would sound but it blends well into the mix, and Jack Unruh, who also plays in my rock/blues band Terraplane, manages to get a very Danny Kirwan era Fleetwood Mac-ish tone on it, to my ear. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 06 Dec 11 - 03:42 PM A re-mix of Hey Baby Added new bass track, electric guitar. |

Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 21 Dec 11 - 04:44 PM Free You An original song. CAUTION: Rock music ahead! |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: gnu Date: 21 Dec 11 - 06:37 PM Gee...that's the first one I didn't really care for. Not because it is a "bad" song in ANY way but because the recording quality left me trying to figure out the lyrics and thereby left me without the ability to enjoy it or even "care for it". I guess, overall, I just didn't "hear" the song so I COULDN'T really care for it. I hope you sort that out on accounta I would really like to "hear" it. Hope that doesn't sound to... whatever. Just my opinion. You know I LOVE yer stuff. But, that one got 45 seconds, tops. If I can't make out the lyrics, I am gone. I really hope you give it another go. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 21 Dec 11 - 08:53 PM Well, dealing with amplified instruments is a new thing with me, and especially getting the vocal balanced so it doesn't dominate or get lost in the mix, gnu. I appreciate the feedback and will give it a fresh listen, and possibly remix it. |
Subject: RE: Lonesome EJ New Youtube Videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 22 Dec 11 - 01:33 PM I first saw Brendan Devereaux' tribute to his Grandparents, Liberty Hall, because of a link he posted here on Mudcat. His own version is really powerful, but I pictured a version with photos of the Easter Rebellion and Brendan was gracious enough to grant his permission. Here's my version of Liberty Hall. |
