Subject: RE: Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround From: GUEST,Guest Joan F Date: 26 Jan 25 - 12:57 AM Please change my title to "Aye Waukin' O". I read that the difference between "aye" & "ay" is that "aye" is pronounced "I" & "ay" is pronounced "A" & that "aye" in the song's context is what means "always" in "always awake". |
Subject: RE: Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround From: GerryM Date: 26 Jan 25 - 07:10 AM Joan, thanks. Ewan MacColl recorded the song as Ay Waukin, O. Martyn Wyndham-Read called it Ay Waukin O. Lorna Campbell had it as Aye Waukin O. For Ian Giles, it was Aye Waulkin O. Ewan McLennan; Aye Waulkin, O. Eddie Reader, Aye Waulkin-O. Sam Lee, Aye Walking Oh. It was a close thing, but I decided to go with Ewan MacColl. |
Subject: RE: Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround From: GUEST,Guest Joan F Date: 27 Jan 25 - 09:20 PM But I sang it "Aye", pronounced "I". Ewan wasn't there to sing it his way, whatever that is. |
Subject: RE: Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround From: GerryM Date: 27 Jan 25 - 09:34 PM Joan, MacColl also pronounced it to rhyme with "eye". https://youtu.be/lhAp8_9vqHo?si=xnRvrKZPjqiZq1na |
Subject: Ay Wauking O From: Felipa Date: 28 Jan 25 - 07:01 AM |
Subject: Ay Waukin, O. From: Felipa Date: 28 Jan 25 - 07:13 AM "Ay Waukin, O" is credited to Robert Burns so it seems common sense to me to write the title as it was originally published rather than according to the various interpretors of the song. The online sources I see re Burns use the spelling Ay, and I have always seen it pronounced "aye" Another well-known Burns song is written as "Ae Fond Kiss" (is Ae pronounced as simply a long A?) Burns mixed various Scots dialects and standard English as suited the sound of his lines, and perhaps according to sources of his lines which were often adapted from folk sources. By the way, Ay Waukin, O may have been inspired by a Gaelic song "Cadal Cha Dèan Mi", I won't sleep, which is sung to a fairly similar air. |

Subject: RE: Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround From: GUEST,Guest Joan F Date: 02 Feb 25 - 09:38 AM I gave the story of "Aye Waukin O" as told to us by either the Tannahill Weavers or maybe Ossian as the title meaning "Yeah, always awake" & Trish Santer, who is Scottish, told me I had to spell the 1st word as "aye" or it wouldn't mean "always", just "yeah". I looked it up & basically the lookup agreed with her. I wish you'd honor my title. |
