Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 11 Sep 09 - 10:32 AM Thanks to Pete Coe for an outstanding performance last night. Now we have two weeks of Scottish guests with MICHAEL MARRA a week on Thursday and next Thursday..... Sept 17th * £6.00 * PETE SHEPHEARD, TAM SPIERS & ARTHUR WATSON Three fine performers of Scots traditional song, all with a deep understanding of the genre and all with excellent voices. Accompaniments on melodeon, fiddle and whistle |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 18 Sep 09 - 08:51 AM If you want to hear traditional songs sung in a compelling, passionate way then SHEPHEARD, SPIERS & WATSON are the people for you. Their performance at the Royal Oak last night was a reallt memorable occasion. Next Thursday it is another Scottish visitor though he will be bringing us a very different music and a different approach:- Sept 24th * £6.00 * MICHAEL MARRA Scotland's top songwriter is also a very fine singer and accompanies himself beautifully on piano and guitar. Check out our MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/royaloakfolklewes to hear the following tracks by coming guests:- Michael Marra - "Hermless" - (September 24th) Beverley Smith & Carl Jones - "Carter's Blues" - (October 1st) Jeff Wesley - "Young and Growing" - (October 8th) Dave Ruch - "Cabbage Head" - (October 22nd) Len Graham - "Green Grows The Laurel" - (October 29th) Bob Lewis - "A Sweet Country Life" (November 12th) Dick Gaughan - "The Freedom Come-All-Ye" - (November 19th) Rattle On The Stovepipe - "Eight More Miles To Louisville" (November 26th) Maggie Boyle [with Pete Morton & Chris Parkinson] - "The Little Thatched Cabin" - (December 10th) Chris Parkinson [with Pete Morton & Maggie Boyle] - "Scotch Measure/Mount Hills" - (December 10th) |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 19 Sep 09 - 11:43 AM We are delighted that The Guide section of today's The Guardian mentions that MICHAEL MARRA is at the Royal Oak on Thursday. However..... (No I am not going to say it. Have a look through this thread and see if you can find five previous complaints of this nature.....) Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Sep 09 - 06:32 PM A reminder about Michael Marra at the Royal Oak on Thursday evening..... but there is also our last Sunday of the month session in the bar at the pub - 3.30 until 5.30 - songs and tunes are equally welcome. And don't forget that the pub serves good cheap Sunday roasts beforehand and it is a good place for a chat whilst you are eating.... |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 24 Sep 09 - 08:33 AM It sounds as if the Guardian is reluctant to break with a grand old tradition. Apols for abs this evening - Mother's 90th. birthday outing, hospital visit permitting. M. Marra will be outstanding, as ever. Valmai |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 26 Sep 09 - 08:54 AM I could be the one to tell you how outstanding Michael Marra was on Thursday, but I am the organiser, so it would sound better coming from a member of the audience..... here's an unsolicited email that I received yesterday:- What a glorious evening, Vic! We have so many good evenings at the club, but there are some which simply stand head and shoulders above the rest, and this was one of them. Mick Marra is just so special, there are so many mixed layers of humour and dark sub-text and glorious use of language; but it's also his presentation and performance which put the cherry on the top, because no matter how often I listen to CDs, it's not the same as a live performance. I thought I was finally de-sensitised to "Happed in Mist" - until tonight... And could anybody have expected anything which could *add* to such a night? And yet we got it! Again I say: *BOOK* Ben, Laura and Tab: book them now, before they get ludicrously expensive and start touring the world! It's a trio made in heaven. Her voice is the perfect foil to what Ben and Tab have been doing, so very well, as a duo; it lifts and brightens and highlights, and they respond by raising their game too (as if they needed to!). It reminded me of when Jon Boden and John Spiers came in and did that memorable floor spot ... I don't need to tell you! What a night! -- Molly Well, yes we certainly will be booking Laura Hockenhull, Ben Paley & Tab Hunter but in the meantime there is something really lovely next Thursday..... Oct 1st * £6.00 * BEVERLY SMITH & CARL JONES Old- Timey tunes and songs accompanied by banjo, guitar, mandolin and fiddle by two top American performers on tour. They were great on their last two visits. ...and don't forget the song & tune session this Sunday afternoon. |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 26 Sep 09 - 09:46 AM Another communication, this time from Ben Paley tells me how great Michael Marra was. |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 02 Oct 09 - 10:24 AM A great night at the Royal Oak last night with the outstanding American duo of Beverly Smith and Carl Jones. Our guests over the current six week period have been four Scotsmen, three Americans, an Irishman - so we thought that we would have something novel next Thursday - An Englishman! Oct 8th * £5.00 * JEFF WESLEY Making a very welcome return from Northamptonshire, Jeff Wesley will be singing traditional English songs with that note of authority and authenticity stamped on every note. |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 09 Oct 09 - 11:50 AM The wonderfully mellow voice of Jeff Wesley was a delight last night - and of course, if you book singers of his quality, you are going to attract lots of other fine singers as floors singers; which we did - too many in fact to find space for them all. However, there should be room for every performer next week:- October 15th * Free Admission * OPEN NIGHT On our last Open Night in July, we gave everyone two songs each – and we still didn't fit every performer in. We hope to do so this time. |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 15 Oct 09 - 04:14 AM We hope to be able to fit everybody in for tonight's Open Night but there have been a large number of emails and phone calls requesting spots - including a number of newcomers. |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 19 Oct 09 - 10:10 AM A really enjoyable evening last Thursday with an Open Night, made even more enjoyable for me by the fact that, starting at 8pm, I was able to introduce the last pair of performers, Ian Chisholm and Mike Ainscough at 5 to 11. Next Thursday, we present the first ever performance in the UK of Dave Ruch:- Oct 22nd * £6.00 * DAVE RUCH Another top American visitor, this time from northern New York State. Fine local songs and multi-instrumental tune playing. First British tour. Then next Sunday afternoon there's the regular monthly song and tune session in the bar of the Royal Oak from 3.30 to 5.30. With Vic & Tina booked elsewhere, this month's session will be led by Derek Seed |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Oct 09 - 12:24 PM A superb performance last night in his first ever English booking by Dave Ruch. Go and see him somewhere that he is appearing on this short British tour. SUNDAY AFTERNOON (25/10/09) The monthly Sunday afternoon session will take place in the bar from 3.30 to 5.30. With Vic & Tina engaged elsewhere ( at a concert to raise money for the school that they help to support in The Gambia) the session will be run by Derek Seed. Then next Thursday evening:- October 29th * £6.00 * LEN GRAHAM The singer with one of the outstanding Irish voices will be making a very rare English appearance. Don't miss it! |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 02 Nov 09 - 01:07 PM It would be difficult to describe just how beautiful the singing of LEN GRAHAM was last Thursday. Here was a great singer at the very top of his form. Also it was delightful to have ALASDAIR ROBERTS turning up unannounced to do a superb floor spot. This Thursday the club will be closed - as will all the major roads of Lewes - as it is Bonfire. On the following Thursday evening, the 12th, we are delighted to be able to present one of the finest voices associated with English song when BOB LEWIS is our guest:- Nov 12th * £5.00 * BOB LEWIS The finest of the Sussex traditional singers and a genial man with the very fine repertoire of songs. The evening will also include a showing of Jonathan Roper's film about Bob entitled "The Crocodile, the Cobbler and Bob" |

Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 21 Nov 09 - 02:30 PM DICK GAUGHAN gave a totally superb performance to a capacity crowd on Thursday. We were inundated also with floor singers. I chose, with the exception of one song, female performers and their performances were of the highest quality - particular mention for the concertina playing of Creena Mulchrone and the concertina playing of Mandy Murray. Photographs of the current season at the Royal Oak can be seen by anyone who goes to the Facebook photo album at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2256622&l=975eedcafb&id=554859886 There's another real treat in store next Thursday - November 26th * £6.00 * RATTLE ON THE STOVEPIPE Dave Arthur, Pete Cooper and Dan Stewart comprise one of the most popular trios on the scene. Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 05 Dec 09 - 10:08 AM "Guardian" not quite accurate - Shock! Horror! Today's The Guide in The Guardian has errors in their Rock & Pop section in their mention of the appearance by Pete Morton, Maggie Holland & Chris Parkinson at the Royal Oak in Lewes on Thursday 10th December (or for that matter in Colchester on Monday) as follows:- 1> It is Maggie Boyle and not Maggie Holland who will be appearing. 2> The trio are not an indie act from Nottingham but a trio of very talented top folk performers who will be presenting their lovely show "The Magical Christmas Tree" 3> The Royal Oak is not in the High Street in Lewes but in Station Street. 4> The phone number they quote is not the ones that we supplied. Neither is it the pub phone which we sometimes put in our publicity. It should be 01273 478124. Four major mistakes in twenty words. Not bad even by The Grauniad's standards! If you would like an accurate description of what the evening should be like have a look at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic/news.htm#dec10 If you would like to listen to individual tracks of the three artists concerned go to http://www.myspace.com/royaloakfolklewes |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 06 Jan 10 - 06:51 AM Woke up to heavy snow in Lewes and it is still snowing heavily and even the main roads through the town are closed (11am Wednesday) so we have made the decision to cancel tomorrow night's meeting of the Royal Oak club with Rosie Davis, Bob Winquist & Joe Locker. We will be offering them a replacement booking - probably in April - when they have had a chance to select a date. As I sat down to post this message, I saw an email from Chris Davis from the Wednesday night Arundel folk club. it says:- Hi everyone, Just a quick message in haste to all of you on the Willows' e-mail newsletter list to let you know that, due to the severe weather warnings and treacherous conditions, we've taken the decision to CANCEL tonight's Willows gig with Pied Merlin! :( We're absolutely gutted about this, as have never cancelled a Willows evening before, even when my Dad had a heart attack on a Wednesday afternoon!! But, given the conditions, we don't feel we have any choice. :( Although I haven't spoken to them in concrete terms, we are hoping to reschedule Pied Merlin's gig to later in the year, and will of course let all of you guys know if and when we're able to do this. :) Apologies for any disappointment caused, but hopefully you all understand, and I just hope that the weather will have cleared in time for next Wednesday! Take care, and best wishes, Chris Davis The Willows Folk Club Arundel, West Sussex Please pass this message on to anyone that you think is liable to want to go to either club this week |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 15 Jan 10 - 10:41 AM Back in business last night with a very enjoyable Open Night - it seemed an age since we have had a club night what with Christmas, New Year and then a bad weather cancellation. Next Thursday will be our first guest night of the year with the hugely talented BING LYLE (then the week after it's our big party night for the birthday of Sara Grey) |
Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Jan 10 - 08:58 AM Thanks to BING LYLE for an outstanding performance on Thursday that was really well received by the audience. Now here is something really special..... Next Thursday will be SARA GREY's 70th birthday and we will be having a special birthday party night for her at the Royal Oak in Lewes. She will be performing with her son Kieron and there will be a lot of other special guests turning up to join in the celebrations. It is very appropriate that this birthday should be celebrated at our club because we gave Sara her first English folk club booking at our club - a mere 40 years ago. Please be there! If you really can't make it, please send a card, a letter, a message to be read out to her on the night. Have a look at http://www.myspace.com/royaloakfolklewes where you can hear a track of Sara playing and singing and a Youtube video Sara & Kieron. Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Jan 10 - 09:07 AM Oh! and thank you to THE GUARDIAN for mentioning Thursday's gig with Sara Grey & Kieron Means in their "Guide" section today. It's a pity that they got most of the details wrong..... but if you have read this thread before, you will know that that is too much to expect. I don't post here every time they get it wrong; that would be a terribly repetitive bore, but I do email them every time they get it wrong to thank them for the entry and pointing out the errors. I really should take up something more productive, like banging my head against a brick wall. |

Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 06 Apr 10 - 07:13 AM Two really great nights on our last two meetings - JIM MacFARLAND was on outstanding form for the evening on March 25th and he attracted a sizeable crowd to hear and appreciate his wonderful way with traditional songs. Then on 1st April, our ALL FOOLS OPEN NIGHT drew another good crowd and many performers. By cutting down the interval to a very few minutes and calling for snappy introductions for performers and songs, we just about managed to get everyone in for theit two items each before ten past eleven. This coming Thursday sees another really excellent night in prospect with another return visit by the Askew sisters:- April 8th * £6.00 * HAZEL & EMILY ASKEW Traditional songs and music with melodeon and fiddle played with attack, verve and imagination Our websites are at:- http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic/ and http://www.myspace.com/royaloakfolklewes At the Myspace site, you can hear the following tracks by coming guests:- Emily & Hazel Askew - "Fare The Well, My Dearest Dear (April 8th) Rosie Davis [with Joe Locker & Bob Winquist] - "My Blue Heart" - (April 15th) Chris Coe & John Adams - "Peeler Creek Waltz/Dog In Difficulty" - (April 22nd) Roger Watson [with Musa M'Boob] "Gulliver" - (April 29th) Jeff Warner - "Come Take A Trip In My Airship" - (May 20th)Mat Green & Andy Turner - "Quicksteps" - (March 4th) Debby McClatchy - "Charlie Poole's Ramble" - (May 27th) Peta Webb & Ken Hall - "Yodel It Over Again" - (June 10th) Chris Foster - "Lord Bateman" - (June 17th) Bayou Seco - "Lazy Heart" - (July 1st) Spider John Koerner - "The Danville Girl" - (September 2nd) (After each gig the tracks will drop off to be replaced with another by an upcoming guest.) Subject: RE: Royal Oak, Lewes - Thursdays From: Vic Smith Date: 18 Apr 10 - 11:19 AM A report by Ray Whiteway-Roberts to be published in both the FOATMAD and BBMA journals:- The Royal Oak Folk Club, Lewes 15-04-2010 Tonight the club hosted an amazing trio in the form of the lovely Liverpudlian, Rosie Davis, from the American part of America, Joe Locker & From the northern part of America, Canadian Bob Winquist. This act was billed as a vibrant and stunning performance of Bluegrass, Old Timey and flat foot dancing, and of course, it was. It was great to see Rosie again as we have both had our downs of late but are now on the way up. God, her voice just cut the harmonies with Joe's quieter sounds. Just took us all back to the days when? It was good to get the chance to have a heart to heart chat to Joe too during the interval. Thanks Joe for your concerns. Bobs fiddle was just magic on whatever number was played. I only hope some of the video footage I took uploads to my computer. They don't always. My arms are still tired as I don't have a pole or tripod and hold the camera at arms length for the duration of the number that's being played. I'm just grateful it wasn't a folk dirge song I was filming lasting thirty verses or more. My only criticism is where were all the Bluegrass and Old Time lovers? My eternal thanks go to Vic & Tina Smith who book the Old Time musicians from this and the other side of the pond and the joy I receive from seeing these great performers in action is immeasurable. There'll come a time when I won't be able to get out to see these events and all I'll have is my memories, pictures and films, but what treasures they'll be. I'll be able to say to myself and my grand children "Yes, I was there when?" I implore you to get out and experience as much as you can while you can and support our home grown as well as overseas artists. What a great night, thanx Rosie, Bob & Joe. |
