Subject: RE: 10 Nov 1975 -- Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Nov 22 - 03:51 PM Today marks 47 years since the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior, 17 miles from Whitefish Bay in Northern Michigan. I saw the ore boats all the time when I was growing up - we could sometimes see them in the distance through our living room window, off beyond the Wind Point Lighthouse and reef. When I was in school in Milwaukee, I was very close to Jones Island, where the Edmund Fitzgerald and other ore boats tied up for the Winter. I've often wondered if I had seen the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum tells the story: |

"On November 10th it will be fifty years since that tragic night when 29 men were lost to Lake Superior." ""@colettedeux 1 day ago "As I am sure most here know, Gordon Lightfoot wrote this about an event on Lake Superior in 1975. He went on to donate the residuals to the families of the "wives and the sons and the daughters" of the men who died. All 29 aboard died that night. When the lyrics say, "the lake never gives up her dead", it is the literal truth. Lake Superior is so deep and the water so cold flesh doesn't rot and so the bodies stay where they are, at the bottom. The bell that is rung - now 30 times - each year, is from the Fitzgerald with a replacement bell placed on the bow. Thank you Home Free for including this tribute to the 29 brave men and families. It is musically and visually your best work so far. IMHO."" |
