Subject: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 05 - 07:43 PM Hey, gol danged, you heard me right... I.6 gallon flushes??? Like with 1.6 gallons ya gotta flush the thing half a dozen or more times to get it flushed??? Well, accordin' to the Wes Ginny Slide Rule the new water savin' toilets use twice as much water to get the job done?!?!?!... Yeah, me and the P-Vine went toidy shoppin' today and after seein' what's out there I decided to go by the old hotel I own and poke 'round thru it and found a nice old toidy with a tank that holds 'bout 3 and 1/2 gallons... I'll go back, snag it, clean it up, put new innards in it and keep gettin' up... And save water in the process... And the best part about this is there's another dozen old toilets in the hotel... Yeah, I was thinkin' I was on top of the world today when I drove my beat up old Toyota to by more than beat up ol' hotel, went in, carefully stepped over the dead pigeon in the hall, and went from nasty room to another surveyin' nasty ol' toilets... If this is success, then bring on some failuer, will ya... But, hey, that ol' toidy sho nuff has a big tank... Sad commentary when it's "big tanks" that get's a guy's blood pumpin'... Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Deckman Date: 11 Oct 05 - 10:14 PM This thread title caught my eye. Many years ago, I was asked to survey one of the Seattle "turn of the century" mansions. I dutifully did so, counted the bathrooms, bedrooms, perused the basement for signs of rot, etc. This was/is a four story mansion but in 1895. I spent a full day going through crack and crevice looking for problems that needed attention. I finally reached the fourth story w a a a y up high. Lo and behold, I found a tiny bathroom in the corner of a "maid's room." Yep, the toilet was imported from England and it was stamped in that beautiful blue dye ... "Thomas Crapper!" I offered to trade my day's work for just the toilet but the homeowner was too smart for that! Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Metchosin Date: 11 Oct 05 - 11:06 PM We just got a new Caroma dual flush from Australia. ( 1.6 / 0.8 US Gal) We haven't hooked it up yet, as the new powder room is not yet complete, so right now it sits by my computer and I admire it as a art piece. I'll let you know how it works. I believe, unlike most NA toilets, its not a siphon, its a wash down. I'm betting it works just fine. Then again there may be a lot of dirty toilets in Australia. Either that or North Americans are just more full of sh*t than their Aus counterparts. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: JohnInKansas Date: 11 Oct 05 - 11:56 PM Bobert - I'll certainly agree that when the US outlawed the old 'uns the immediate replacements were "crap." I had the misfortune of not having a place to salvage, and had to install a couple of them. I will say though that the last 3 I've personally installed were of the "low volume type," and all 3 work better than any of the old ones I'd had before. You've just got to quit dealing with "low volume sellers" who still have old ones on the floor if you want the latest in "low volume crap..(.er.)s"..# John |
Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Oct 05 - 12:34 AM Of course this was a Bobert thread! I made a bet with myself to that effect before I opened it! Good luck with the new/old commode. If you find the big tank uses too much water, you can always put a couple of bricks in it. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: open mike Date: 12 Oct 05 - 01:24 AM i ownder if the dual flush mentioned above is like the ones that they have in Sweden. there are two choices on many of them a little bit of water, if that's all you need, and another button if you think it will take more...this saves a lot of water in the long run! or you could save by using this motto: if it's yellow it is mellow, if it's brown flush it d o w n |
Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Joybell Date: 12 Oct 05 - 05:43 PM Aussie toilets do use a better design than American ones. I was looking for Californian wildflower pictures the other day, though, when I found a wonderful poppy-urinal. It was in the shape of a Californian poppy - bright orange. I want one! Don't care if I can't use it and True-love prefers the lemon tree. I want one! |
Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Bobert Date: 12 Oct 05 - 06:48 PM Well, sure, there are lots of high buck toidies out there that will actually flush with 1.6 or less gallons of water but like who wants to spend that kinda money... The old one I'm going to recycle from the old hotel is gonna come in at less than $20.00 fir everything I need to rebuild it's innards... Bobert |

Can you go give it a good flush 'round 10:00 tonight??? I'll put my ear to a wine glass on the floor to see if I can pick up just a little of the rumblin' sound... Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Bill D Date: 12 Oct 05 - 07:44 PM when the first 1.6 gadgets came out, they were miserable! No notion of engineering and just did not work! I gather they do have carefully figgered out new ones that 'can' do the job, but as Bobert says, thay can be expensive. I talked to a plumber who says old toilets salvaged from houses bring premium prices these days when folks refuse to use those chancey new ones@ |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: JennyO Date: 13 Oct 05 - 11:49 AM Well now I've seen everything! I saw a show on TV not long ago where they were demonstrating a toilet that would flush 24 golf balls, so I went looking for it with Google. Not only did I find that one, but toilets that raise the lid when they sense you coming into the room, and toilets with an aquarium in a see-through cistern - in this video. If you click on 'watch' where it tells you to choose a video, you can bypass the commercial. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Joybell Date: 13 Oct 05 - 06:49 PM I haven't alerted Hildebrand to this thread. It would just start him off. As Stilly River Sage points out he had a serious problem with American toilets. (Your toilet was fine, by the way! SRS.) How to put this delicately? When sitting down the level of the water is prone to link up with elderly (that's the key word) bits of male anatomy. It wasn't a problem when he was youthful. He spent his first 30 years in America and a trip back 10 years ago didn't cause any concern. I'm thinking about a sort of harness affair if we ever visit again. Any ideas? Cheers, Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: New Toilets Ain't Worth Crap... From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Sep 08 - 11:49 AM Tom solved the problem of the multi-gallon flush when he built our post-and-beam kit house (with his then-wife) in 1977 -- we have a composting toilet. Not for everybody, but, hey, it never freezes in the winter when other pipes are solid. (We heat primarily with wood, too.) And, since Barry Finn's wife Justine gave me a children's toilet training book with a computer chip that plays a flushing noise, people who are not Soddy-Potty-trained can listen to a nice flushing sound for closure.
