Off topic in a thread about a man who has committed suicide? How so?

McGrath, as usual, keeps mistaking his opinions for facts.

Suicide is only "always negative" if that is what your belief system tells you. Apparently, McGrath believes that, so he claims we all should accept his beliefs as facts too.

What a crock.

The guy was a lunatic, and he had a good, decent, brilliant writing streak which lasted as long as a lot of writers' do. Everything he wrote wasn't brilliant, a lot of what got published (his novels in particular) was pure drivel, except for his groupie initiates into his personality cult.

Anyone who claims that everything ever written by a person is sheer brilliance doesn't know jack about writing. Or at least can't distinguish between quality and inferior writing.

Sure, HST was fun to read. Had some good insights. Did well when he wrote about sports and politics. Beyond that, not much to impress. His drug addled writing in desperate need of an editor who didn't fear for his life working with him, is some of his worst.

I thought that song didn't really have the punch you expect with Loudon Wainright.

It is nice to see that Loudon Wainwright III inhabits these pages from time to time. I still recall fondly a folkfestival in a college gymnasium in Ithaca NY where I first saw LWIII. Great show.

Very appropriate too. In a previous thread from the last century (year 2000) Who's Hunter Thompson, I wrote:

The singing equivalent of Hunter Thompson I always think of as being Loudon Wainwright the Third - even more than Neil Young. I always remember his concert at Sidmouth a couple of years ago, when half the Town Council sitting on deckchairs in the front row walked out scandalised. He hadn't even set out to shock them, I think. Some people are more fragile than others.

I see I was looking for "Saints and Sots" then too. Has no one out there got it? I think it'd be a good one to sing for Hunter S Thompson.

Is the McGrath of Harlow 22 Feb 05 - 05:33 PM the same McGrath of Harlow who posted 29 Jul 00 - 09:42 PM? I doubt it, but how do we know for sure? It gets so confusing trying to keep up with all these McGraths of Harlow.

Good point GUEST,

Self promotion ain't flattering to anyone and in a Kiltted Kelt it is humilating to all the Klan.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Let us hope - the poor soul - has not found himself "trapped" in an "after life."

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Anyone heard that HST may have come down with a painful and/or terminal disease?

A young friend of mine insists that he read this somewhere ~ but I think that this kid, for whatever reason, needs to believe that Thompson had a "good reason" for killing himself, and may well be grasping at straws.

I think of Hunter S. Thompson as one of the few warriors of our time. He was brutally honest about his own life and the lives of others. He dared to explore a frontier that most of us would never dare to enter. He was courageous and crazy at the same time. He lived life on the edge and opened his perception of the world to us.

He lived longer than most people that abuse their bodies so thoroughly. The fact that he could maintain any credibility or sanity is a wonder. How did he manage to live in a world so full of terror and loathing. I wanted to comfort him. I still do.

Rest in peace, Hunter. Some people are just too fragile for life.

Don Meixner,

Start with "Hell's Angel's", then "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail". Then either "F&L in Los Vegas" or "The Great Shark Hunt".

Ed
