"Green Grow the Rashes" is a great tune also... also by Burns.

I LOVE BURNS! Now Westlin Winds is just Fantastic! And I Quite agree with you on "Mary Ellen Carter", It is just the thing... After hearing THE most gifted player do MEC, I taught myself the 'wrong' melody the next evening and it is SO hard to change a song that you learn wrong. Also, MEC needs to be sung with GUSTO. When I hear it at song circles, done in whispy insecure mode (we all get there from time to time) It just falls flat. IMO

Well, when I hear "sweet and magical" I have to think of the Incredible String Band. How about "Tree" (the version on the first album rather than the one on Liquid Acrobat), "Painting Box" on 5000 Spirits, "Witch's Hat" on Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, "Lordly Nightshade" on Wee Tam and the Big Huge, "Bridge Song" on U, "Red Hair" on Liquid Acrobat, "Sunday Song" and "Seagull" on Earthspan (love that Heron and McKechnie combo!), "This Moment" on I Looked Up . . . really, it's an embarrassment of riches we're dealing with here, and I guess this post means I've just come out of the ISB fanatic closet. . . but right this very moment I am totally entranced with Dylan's "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." Not sweet, perhaps, but magical. Mmmmm.

'The song of the Wandering Angus' - preferably sung by Martin Wyndham-Read (mind you most songs sung by him sound great).

All the best

Steve

I must say,... I think people around here have the most delicious sence of musical taste! I have never heard ISB, though I've heard of them frequently enough. Guess its time to make another trip to the music store!

Oh! what beautiful songs you have!

Mbo - thank you for mentioning 'The Rose'. That's what first came to my mind. Well I don't know most of the other songs mentioned, but still...

Is 'The Rose' too simple for english speaking people? Does it sound too sweetish to them? Did they simply hear it too often? Please mind that these are real questions I don't know the answer, I am not trying to provoke anybody. There is a german version and Joan Baez once did it. But as most translations of songs it suffered and it does sound sweetish in german (bad thing for every good song). In english it seems ok to me AND I LOVE THAT SONG. In english.

Or are Matt and I simply too young?

:-)))

Joerg

Too young? If you only knew how jealous we are of your youth, and how much we hope that you will see to it that you can stick with that little folk spark. The torch was lit long before any of us even thought about existing, and when younger people step from the folds to carry "the people's torch" of folk art,... it is da*n exiting! Your love of music is a gift that you can share!!! And, if you really enjoy it, you will find all the help you need...to do it! GOOD LUCK!

Thomas, I agree about The Mary Ellen Carter needing to be sung with gusto--but I have to say, it's not that easy a song to sing. It covers a pretty wide range, and I also don't think Stan sang it in the best key for most people's voices--I know when I sing it a capella, I move it down some, and when I sing along with the tape I'm really pushing it during the chorus.

I love the Incredible String Band! Years ago, I used to sing "First Girl I Loved" in my regular set. Now, I'm afraid that I;m somewhat long in the tooth for it to be convincing. But, my wife, Amy, tells me that hearing me sing that song was what caused her to fall in love with me and decide to marry. And for that I'm always grateful.

If a new boy may make a suggestion 'Mary Hamilton' always brings a lump to my throat.

Of course a new boy can make a suggestion! Welcome, Michael, and speak up as much as you like. Hope you enjoy the Mudcat and the Digitrad and find them both as enormously useful as I have. And I'm with you on "Mary Hamilton." Margaret

Hope there's room for one more suggestion. "Travellers' Prayer" by John Renbourn. Absolute magic.

The song Lifeline was written by Eric Bogle and should you wish to obtain a copy of it, it is to be found on an early recording "Singing the spirit home"
