Subject: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 12 Oct 08 - 03:44 PM Am I the first to thread this topic? Today is our Canadian Thanksgiving! Blessings to all, and if you have much on your plate, be thankful - and remember those with less. Today is gorgeous, sunny, very warm and the trees and sumachs are brilliant colours of red, orange, yellow and burgundy. What a perfect weekend to be with family and friends! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: topical tom Date: 12 Oct 08 - 04:52 PM Thanks heaps for the wishes and greeting, black walnut. The day is indeed gorgeous. We are so fortunate if we are in reasonably good health and have family and/or friends to share the blessings with.We must think of the less fortunate at this time. How wonderful to live in such a country with all its little problems. We could be much worse off! |

From: sian, west wales Date: 13 Oct 08 - 05:36 AM Once again, we celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving in west Wales - yesterday, as we don't have a public holiday for it. All came hungry, all left full, some are showing up throughout today with plastic boxes to help with the leftovers. Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Canucks. sian, west wales formerly of Niagara Penninsula |

Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 13 Oct 08 - 12:04 PM Best wishes. How I wish the United States would move Halloween and Thanksgiving into early fall when the weather is nicer and travel is safer. Once I entertained a band from Scotland on Thanksgiving Day. (a Thursday in late November.) They were staying in a downtown hotel, and didn't realize it was a holiday. They gazed amazed at empty streets and skyscrapers with no one in them and wondered if the aliens had finally come and taken everyone away. I told them that Christmas might be bigger in commercial terms, but for most American adults, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday of the year. There were nods of agreement all around the table. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 13 Oct 08 - 12:10 PM In Canada Thanksgiving is a lower keyed holliday than in the USA but still a time to enjoy family and friends and a hearty meal. Best wishes to all! |

Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: CarolC Date: 13 Oct 08 - 09:33 PM We're having our Thanksgiving dinner tonight (Jigg's Dinner), and we spent a while out on the front porch last night being thankful. This holiday coincides with our wedding anniversary this year, so that makes it doubly nice. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Beer Date: 13 Oct 08 - 10:18 PM Happy anniversary Carol. Jigg's dinner eh! Well we had a traditional turkey one with our son and his girlfriend. It was a great feast as my wife is a wonderful cook. But Jigg's dinner I would have thrown the turkey out the window for a scoff like that. Good for you Carol and all your love ones. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Peace Date: 13 Oct 08 - 11:08 PM "It was a great feast as my wife is a wonderful cook." THAT's the truth. Happy Anniversary Carol and Jack. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Beer Date: 13 Oct 08 - 11:15 PM Hay Peace!! Put in your favorite meal now and it will take place in 9 months. I'm serious on this. Carol! Feel like sharing how many years with jack? Adrien |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: CarolC Date: 13 Oct 08 - 11:30 PM My thanks for the anniversary wishes. The Jigg's dinner was great. We used cabbage from our garden (our carrots and rutabagas aren't ready yet, and we don't have any potatoes planted yet), and it tasted way better than store cabbage. We cooked it in a pressure cooker this time, and that made it even better. This was our sixth anniversary. Ours was the first wedding between two people who met here in the Mudcat, on October 12, 2002. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Beer Date: 13 Oct 08 - 11:46 PM Carol that is great. Love to both of you. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 08 - 12:08 AM I'm told that today is Indigenous People's Day here in the U.S. Maybe it would be good to combine this holiday with Thanksgiving, since Columbus isn't as popular as he used to be. But I guess I'm old, because I'll always associate this date with:
Clumbus sailed the ocean blue.... Happy Indigenous People's Day!!!! Waiut! Wait! Wait! - I thought Columbus Day was October 12.... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Peace Date: 14 Oct 08 - 12:22 AM Adrien, Tourtiere, peas and mashed potatoes with HP Sauce on the side. I will behave for the whole festival. Tell your missus. With the pastry that gal makes this will be a meal to rival that that my aunt used to make. A thousand thanks. Bruce |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: gnu Date: 14 Oct 08 - 04:40 AM Yo CC and JtS.... happy belated anniversary!!! Peas puddin, too? n' Figgy Duff? I haven't had a jigs dinner in nearly a week... well, I used a smoked ham, which is nearly as good for the blood pressure. >:-) First one since spring and it was some shockin good. I went to SiL's for supper with the family yesterday. I am thankful it's over. I am sure my guts will return to normal today. She gave Mum and I each some turkey to take home. And, I got all the leftover turnip... a good sized bowl of it... I figured if I fry the Lard Tunderin Jaysus out of er til almost burnt and add a whack of spuds and carrots, I might just be able to neutralize most of the margerine she mashed into it. Hope all my fellow Canuck's had a Thankful day. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: CarolC Date: 14 Oct 08 - 05:51 AM Thanks! ;-) mmmm bubble and squeak mmmmm We don't use any meat in the Jigg's dinner because I don't eat meat. So we put some burnt sesame oil in instead, and JtS says it tastes as good that way as it does with the smoked ham (but different). We haven't done the peas pudding or the figgy duff yet. We've talked about it a few times. Maybe next time. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Bee Date: 14 Oct 08 - 07:37 AM Late to this thread, so I hope everyone's holiday was as satisfying as mine, with friends, family, and food of the finest. Turkey dinner, cranberry sauce, cranberry apple pie. Sent my beloved back to his away job with plenty of turkey sammiches, and a portable supper or two. Now, get out and vote, all you Canadians! |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: GUEST,Rosie The Wonder Dog Date: 14 Oct 08 - 09:21 AM Mooh was and is without his regular computer, but gives thanks for the tech guy and the promised return today. Thanks for health and friends, for employment and safety, and the love of family, not to mention good dogs. Mooh painted the porch window frames, stored the window mount air conditioner which didn't get much use this year, went to the family cottage and cleaned out the eaves, put on the storm windows, hiked, relaxed, played some banjo, kept me amused playing fetch, and let me roll in dead stuff on the beach. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go. Thanks to the revolving door of young musical minds, I keep watch over things around here while Mooh works. A dog's work is never done. Go Leafs Go! Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 14 Oct 08 - 09:39 AM Merely one week ago I witnessed Rosie and Cosmo being blessed outdoors at St. George's Anglican in Goderich, alongside cats, hamsters, even a horse. They looked all clean and tidy then, but in less than a week Mooh's letting his "little" ones roll in dead stuff and start bitching at each other. My oh my. Missed you at dinner time Sunday, Mooh! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 14 Oct 08 - 09:50 AM Canadian Thanksgiving Trivia...... "LET'S TALK TURKEY: * The first Thanksgiving Day in Canada after the confederation was celebrated on April 15, 1872, to mark The Prince of Wales' recovery from a serious illness. since 1931, it has been held on the second Monday of October. * If gobbling down turkey were an Olympic sport, Canada wouldn't make the podium. Each year we consume 4.2 kilograms per person, while Israelis eat 11.5 kilograms per person, more than anyone else. Turkey eaters in the U.S. and Europe also eat more than us. * TA turkey's head turns deep blue when it's excited or scared, and, ironically, this bird has a great sense of taste. * When a turkey is scared it makes a "turk, turk, turk" sound. * Male turkeys, called toms, gobble, while females - hens- make a clicking sound. * Mature turkeys have about 3,5000 feathers." (from Canadian Living Magazine, October 2008) |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Mooh Date: 14 Oct 08 - 10:54 AM b.w. ~ Same here. Seems like I step out to get my laptop from the tech guy and the dogs highjack Tami's computer, then get to scrapping with each other. Geez... Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: gnu Date: 14 Oct 08 - 02:27 PM Do they still have the turkey chase at the farms in Ontario? I lived there for 6 years, from the ages of 3 til 9. They used to charge about $5 (? can't recall) to let kids from 8 to 12 years old get in the field and try to catch a turkey for keeps. I assume that was stopped after the lawsuits. (?) I got one every time. On accounta Dad told me to go after the smallest one. I was a large lad and a 10 to 15 pounder was easy. Then 50 pound restaurant turkeys could kick a man's ass. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 14 Oct 08 - 05:58 PM Never heard of this!! Maybe I've lived in the big city too long. But going after the small ones....the poor wee things.... ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Peace Date: 14 Oct 08 - 06:09 PM We have turkey shoots in Alberta, and they are fun. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 14 Oct 08 - 08:23 PM Turkey SHOOTS?! I'm going to go back to my tofu now.... ~d |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Mooh Date: 14 Oct 08 - 08:46 PM I won a turkey shoot once with a 60lb compound bow and a target arrow. The guys with rifles couldn't hit anything...maybe it was the booze. They wouldn't give me the turkey I shot, it was a styrofoam decoy, but instead I got a Butterball. Weird rural passtimes, but loads of fun. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Bee Date: 14 Oct 08 - 08:51 PM Couple a ways down the shore here has probably the oldest turkeys in Canada. They raised a dozen meat birds, for the winter, ended up with a dozen extra mouths to feed. Apparently free range turkeys can be charming individuals with unique personalities and it's very difficult to kill something you feel affection for - unless you are really, really hungry.. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Peace Date: 14 Oct 08 - 08:53 PM NO, NO! Ya take an area and mark it on a 100 sq foot grid. Assign numbers to the grids and sell raffle tickets. Where the turkey poops is the number of the winner. S/he wins 50% of the pot and the rest goes to a home for aged turkeys. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: Bee Date: 14 Oct 08 - 10:06 PM I must pass that on, Peace. Friends of mine coulda done that with their ten year old chicken, but a weasel got her last summer. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: gnu Date: 15 Oct 08 - 07:18 AM Yes, bw, it was cruel, but that was back in the 60s. |
Subject: RE: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! From: black walnut Date: 15 Oct 08 - 08:45 AM Ah yes, the cruel 60s. The decade of heartbreak...I remember. Wild turkeys are especially personable. When my children were little had a great country friend named Clara - a female wild turkey - who loved them to hug and pet her. She was a darlin', that one. ~b.w. |
