Subject: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Peter T. Date: 29 Aug 00 - 05:56 PM Public Service Announcement: This week's New Yorker has a brief piece on the forthcoming Coen Brother's film, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and the documentary of the music from the film performed at a concert in the Ryman in Nashville. A picture accompanies this article. Included in this picture are (1) Gillian Welch; (2) John Hartford; (3) The Peasall Sisters; (4) Ralph Stanley; and (5) Emmylou. This is the great picture of Emmylou you have all been waiting for, guys (well, the fully clothed picture, anyway). Trust me. New Yorker, issue of Sept 4, pages 68-69. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: katlaughing Date: 29 Aug 00 - 06:35 PM Is this what it has come to then, Peter? This idle idolatry of an unreachable nightingale?**BG** I liked her better when her hair was long! Just enjoyed a really good Austin City Limits last Saturday night on PBS. She hosted a song circle with Buddy(?) Martin, Dave Mathews and a couple of others whose names I can't remember. katlaughinggentlytho' |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Aug 00 - 07:38 PM I saw that one awhile back kat......really wonderful and a very different Dave Mathews. Ah. but sweet Emmy.........She brought something different to Country and added so much. In many ways a true folksinger as she is well versed and an excellent performer of the mountain songs as well as early country. Not everyone likes that voice, but for me, there is none like it and her many associations over the years have given her a versatility almost unmatched. I never tire of hearing or seeing her. Gotta' go get a copy of the New Yorker..........Cletus can use the rest of it for whatever..........gawd, I don't even want to think about him reading it. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Aug 00 - 03:57 AM Be still, my heart! That woman could cause me to get downright stupid. To have a woman who can sing so pretty and be so pretty, well, it's more than a man can handle. I checked the New Yorker website, and they don't give any excerpts or pictures from current or past issues. Say, Peter, are you willing to scan me a -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: GUEST,Michael in Swansea Date: 30 Aug 00 - 06:16 AM God, I love that woman. I've only seen her live once, that was at the Hammersmith Odeon on the Quarter Moon tour. Memories sigh! Michael |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Jim Krause Date: 30 Aug 00 - 01:15 PM Never seen her live, but OH YEAH! |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Charlie2 Date: 30 Aug 00 - 01:36 PM Emmy Lou is a hottie. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Aug 00 - 01:41 PM See what this woman does to men who are otherwise decent, proper, non-chauvinistic, politically-correct folkies? She makes us all goofy. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: tar_heel Date: 30 Aug 00 - 01:49 PM the love of my life....emmylou harris....she made an appearance in wiston-salem back in 1982,at a local dive....i was working in the western mountains of the state ,that day........drove in a down pour of cold rain for 2 1/2hours just to go see and hear her sing....took my camera....got some of the most wonderful pictures of her performing there!yes..these were the days when her hair was still long and black,,,,,,,,,that typlical folk singer look...but not typlical.....a real honest to goodness folk singer and country entertainer.she was nice enough to stop and chat with me on her way out after the concert.ahhhh yes, sweet emmylou harris.have a big 8 x 10 photo from those pictures i took,in my good memories album!!dang!has it really been over 18 years ago??? |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Peter T. Date: 30 Aug 00 - 02:45 PM I'd like to, Joe, but my scanner is unplugged at the moment because I am in mid-office shift. If I remember I will send you one when things are sorted out. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Jim Krause Date: 30 Aug 00 - 03:18 PM I fell in love with her when I heard an early album of hers with the track on it called Roses In the Snow. What was the title of the old LP? |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: SDShad Date: 30 Aug 00 - 03:40 PM What Joe says is true, it's true. Dear Emmylou just has that effect on us. Even a hard-bitten, miles-on-the-road type like Steve Earle gets all mushy and chivalric when Emmylou comes up. I've been hopelessly, head-over-heels in love with the girl ever since the first time I listened to her vocals on Gram Parsons' "Grievous Angel" in 1985. It's a one-sided affair, it's true, but I think my wife suspects. :-) So, uhm, did somebody say they were gonna scan the New Yorker photo????? Chris |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Sean Belt Date: 30 Aug 00 - 03:58 PM Soddy, I'm pretty sure the album title was also Roses in the Snow. It's the first traditional/old-time country/bluegrass sort of album I ever really liked. It led me down the path to the wayward state I'm in today, musically speaking. *BG* - Sean |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: bob schwarer Date: 30 Aug 00 - 04:50 PM Emmylou!!! Oh,yeah. First time I saw her was inthe early 70's on a country music award show. They were showcasing supposed up and coming talent. Don't remember any of the rest, but they had 120 pounds of Emmylou stuffed into a 90 pound pair of jeans. Just knew she would go far. So her live twice after that. Great shows. Bob S.

Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Kim C Date: 30 Aug 00 - 05:25 PM My husband brought umpteen gazillion Emmylou recordings AND Bonnie Raitt recordings to our marriage. I have got to see both of them live (not at the same time, though!), and I sold home accessories to Emmylou's mother when I worked at a furniture store several years ago. (Emmy came in with her!) So I told Mister, if my hair goes gray, it's just goin gray, like Emmylou. Well, he said that's okay by him. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 30 Aug 00 - 05:35 PM TarHeel....that was exactly the right flavor. She IS all those things. Wonderful woman. I too got hooked on Roses in the Snow which was a fantastic album. I like the way she goes back and explores the roots of several genres. And for my money, "Prayer in Open D" is one of the best songs ever written. Not too many songs that put the blame on our lives in the right place...ourselves. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Fortunato Date: 30 Aug 00 - 05:40 PM While I was doing an audition at a club in Georgetown many years ago, Emmylou was rehearsing in another room. If you think she's gorgeous now, you should have seen her then, my boys. I couldn't even say hello, I think I smiled and I know I nodded, but I damn sure couldn't say anything. And then she sang. Surpassing beauty. If she'd played her cards right she could have had me. regrets, Chance

Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Aug 00 - 06:06 PM Better yet, she could have had me. She still can, for that matter... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: mountain tyme Date: 31 Aug 00 - 02:21 AM I sure did try hard not to respond to this silly thread cause I'm not the type to flame but [IMO] you have all been duped! Been there. Nuff sed! Sorry about the bubble Joe! :) |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Aug 00 - 04:05 AM What is your implication here, Mountain Tyme? That Emmylou won't give me the time of day? I went to the library today and looked for the New Yorker. The September 4 issue hasn't reached California yet. Still, the previous issue had two great stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer. If you haven't read singer, you're missing something. Hmmm. I wonder if Emmylou likes Jewish authors... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Peter T. Date: 31 Aug 00 - 10:02 AM (Worth another trip, Joe, believe me). As with virtually everything else, I am in total agreement with Cp. "The shadows filling up this land, are the ones I built with my own hand". Perfect line. As I have been working on open D, I went straight for this one. (can't do the 13th fret stuff alas). This song has the same quality as "Boulder to Birmingham" (a truly great song) -- she has the very rare ability to take old religious phrases and make them new, salting them with striking fresh images ("and the rock of ages I have known, is a weariness down in the bone"; "the last time I felt like this, I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire, and I stood on the mountain in the night and I watched it burn). It is impressive because it is so hard to do without it going really bad. Dylan (to connect threads) did it; Leonard Cohen overdid it, but made it work occasionally. This is a very elite league. It requires absolutely impeccable taste (in the artistic sense). I wonder where she got that style from -- not from Parsons, as far as I can tell. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: SDShad Date: 31 Aug 00 - 12:52 PM Now, tyme, if'n you'd have said "deluded," I'd surely cop to that. But ref. above: Emmy has that effect on men. She makes us goony. But "duped?" Surely you're not suggesting that our Em has been toying with us all these years? Say it ain't so! Oh, and for those (like me) who are waitin' to see the picture of Emmylou from the New Yorker, www.emmylou.net has a marvelous gallery of concert photos from over the years, as well as lots of bio stuff, Gram stuff, etc. *sigh* Shad |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Peter T. Date: 31 Aug 00 - 04:03 PM wow. thanks, shad. October 10. Toronto. The Music Hall. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: GUEST,Scotguy Date: 02 Sep 00 - 07:19 PM She dropped into Sandy Bell's pub in Edinburgh, Scotland last Friday, shot the breeze with some of us locals and sang along in the session. And drank a pint of cider! |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Mooh Date: 02 Sep 00 - 08:17 PM Heard somewhere that EH plays a guitar built by an Ontario (Canada) guy by the name of Reid (sp?). Anyone know about this? I think I may have met this guy and played his guitar at a festival a few years ago. If that's as close as I ever get to Emmylou, it's still a privilege. Sigh, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Sep 00 - 09:14 PM Hmmm. I wonder if that's Rick's friend Glen Reid, an Ontario folksinger who does some interesting stuff. I'll send Rick a link and ask if he knows. -Joe, still waiting for Peter T. to scan and post the photo- |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Mooh Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:09 PM Joe, That's the name I heard. Figure it's true? Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: WyoWoman Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:35 PM You guys are all so cute. Bless yer little cotton socks ... ww |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:42 PM Aw, Wyo, I wouldn't expect you to understand... |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: WyoWoman Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:52 PM No, no. I totally do. I meant it. It's cute to see a bunch of guys so unabashed in their admiration and crush on someone who appears to be a really nice woman, in addition to her musical talents and physical beauty. If she was some big-bazoomed bimbo, I wouldn't think it was cute, I'd think it was icky. But then you all are far too classy to get all mushy over some big-bazoomed bimbo, aren't ya? Aren't ya? WEll, yes, except for Catspaw, of course ... I had exactly the same hairdo in 1975. Does that count? (Of course, every other young woman in the U.S. and much of the rest of the world did as well, but hey ... ) ww |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 12:02 AM Hi guys......This came up one time before when we were discussing Gibsons or something and Rick brought up Glen Reid then. She is of course mentioned on his website as is Rick, but I have rarely seen Emmylou anywhere without a J Gibson as her guitars. Last time I saw her live, she swapped guitars several times and all four used were Gibson J's. I'm sure Rick will have info and although I'm sure she probably loves Glen Reid Instruments, she also has a LONG association with Gibson as you can see from the NAMM 2000 Show(scroll to the bottom for the "Gibson Girl"). Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Mooh Date: 03 Sep 00 - 07:19 AM I think I'd like to be reincarnated as one particular Glen Reid guitar, just to sit on that lap... An aside: I remember Glen Reid now. Met him at the Collingwood Celtic Festival, sat on my tailgate and played his guitar. I had been guitar shopping and was considering his, though I bought from someone else eventually. I'd like to try his mandolin(s). The world gets smaller. Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 09:24 AM Actually I'd prefer to be the Gibson Mooh......more surface area for contact. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Mooh Date: 03 Sep 00 - 09:52 AM Spaw. Hey, I'm not fussy! Not even jealous...Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Peter T. Date: 03 Sep 00 - 01:32 PM She is interviewed interestingly in today's New York Times here! She is not in a relationship at the moment, so there is hope for someone. I suspect he would have to be the male equivalent of Dostoyevsky's stenographer. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 01:53 PM I was going to make some wise-ass remark about the steno reference until I read the article. I see your point. That's an excellent piece and one of the best I've read about her. One line is the best description of her I have ever encountered and though it was written in regard to appearance, I think it describes Emmylou Harris musically and in all other ways as well......... An heirloom rose among daisies. Yeah......I like that....... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: tradsteve Date: 03 Sep 00 - 03:22 PM ...maybe she likes 'em young... there is hope... |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 03:28 PM Uh, look here tradboy.......The line forms to the rear!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Rick Fielding Date: 03 Sep 00 - 05:09 PM Yup, Glen's been my buddy for about 30 years now. We designed a mando thingy and a bass a few years ago. Good singer and player, and all round handy guy. Emmy's a fine performer, but I like women who are a little more "softig"! Rick |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: GUEST,MoohTooh Date: 03 Sep 00 - 07:52 PM Great Rick, then don't take up space in line, tee hee. I looked in on GR's website. I love that mando-ish shape! I really ought to seek him out again... Peace, Mooh (not home again). |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 07:58 PM Yeah Mooh, that's what I was thinking. Rick would take up space best used by one of us. So let's see.........You go check on the Reid Guitar connection, Joe can be checking for more websites, we send PT for steno pads, and I'll be here holding down the front of the line. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: richlmo Date: 03 Sep 00 - 10:05 PM I always thought when I die, if I make it to heaven Emmylou and Dan Fogelberg would be be singing me home! Loved her Nash Rambler Band |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: WyoWoman Date: 03 Sep 00 - 10:42 PM What would they be singing? Something from "Angel Band?" Rick, you're such a prince. The women of the Mudcat will love you even more, now that you've professed a preference for zaftig. What a wonderful term that is ... WW (who may be headed that way herself if she doesn't get a real job, give up this freelancing crap and stop with the ice cream a'ready ... ) |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Rick Fielding Date: 03 Sep 00 - 11:35 PM Now I SHOULD say....naturally zaftig, and not that Pamela Anderson Lee chemically enhanced thing. Officially leaving the "date with Emmy" line. Now the "Adrienne Barbeau" line.....Oh Hell, she's probably dead by now! Rick |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Sep 00 - 11:44 PM Oh I dunno Rick......I think she's probably "hangin" around somewhere. She sure was big 25 years ago but I know things have sagged for her in recent years. I think the same may be true of Barbi Benton though she was not quite as up front about things and spent a lot of time laid up at the Playboy Mansion. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: sophocleese Date: 03 Sep 00 - 11:53 PM Watch out Wyo Woman, they're getting into the bazongas talk now. At least they spent some time on an interesting detour discussing what guitar Emmylou uses, not only is she nice, beautiful and talented but she has good taste in guitars too. |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: GUEST,Adrienne Barbeau Date: 04 Sep 00 - 10:22 AM A friend e-mailed and alerted me to a comment made by Rick Fielding that I'm probably dead. I don't know who Mr. Fielding is or why he feels the need to say such things about me, but he is extremely hurtful to me, my friends and my family. I am a very active performer. For more information, please visit my website. www.abarbeau.com Sincerely, Adrienne Barbeau |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Sep 00 - 10:35 AM Where's Barbi Benton for equal time? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: Pixie Date: 04 Sep 00 - 10:36 AM Jees, I don't know if I feel comfortable posting here! But I'm such a fan of Emmylou's that I refuse to be intimidated by drooling postings! I heard from Lynn Miles when she was in Lunenburg last month that Emmylou is doing a concert in Ottawa or Toronto with John Prine, Lucinda Williams?, Mary Chapin Carpenter etc. re: Landmine victims..........sigh......wish she would come (and bring all those folks with her) to do a small concert in Halifax - I have a nice, intimate backyard with a deck shaped like the Ryman stage (smaller version)....she'd feel right at home, I'm sure!

Subject: RE: Emmylou Harris Alert! From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Sep 00 - 11:04 AM A couple of years ago in my office we got into a version of this same discussion and one of the other employees said something about a woman we all knew who was of the Pamela Anderson variety. And all the guys starting saying, "Whoo-hoo" and "Oh,yeah ... " You know, the usual articulate response. And I said, "Guys. Those are plastic bags. That's just little silicon or saline-filled baggies." They all fell silent for a minute or two, then Tom shrugged and said, in a sentence that sums up an area of significant difference between (some) men and (many) women: "I don't care. They're still hooters." Now back to Emmylou: What do you guys think about her hair, now that she's surrendered to the gray? Does that affect your affection? WW |
