I put one of those fat balls out for the tits in my garden today.... One of those balls of seeds and nuts stuck together with animal fat you know? It hangs in the tree and the tits love to peck at it.

Anyway... little pussycat Raven hoovered up the bits that fell off and is now paying the price of all that extra fibre.

Anyone else got a cat that eats birdfood?

We have a dog that eats the sunflower seed husks from under the feeder and then they are expelled in his poops which sometimes are solid seeds.

No Liz - not birdfood, but one of our three will KILL for a nibble of tropical fish food. I think she eats more of it than the fish get.

It's the "flake" kind, and smells like something dead; but I think she likes it 'cause it's a bit crunchy like 'tater chips.

Carnivore poo is not very good for seed germination. Bird poo is excellent; in fact some seeds rely on passing through birds in order to germinate. And some coffee maniacs like that ...

Ah, yes, another case of a couple of countries being separated by a common language...

By the way, PetGold (Petco sells it) has fish flake cat treats -- sort of like tattered beige cellophane. Cats seem to like it, though. (Not crunchy -- must sort of melt in the mouth.)

Back in the days when I had two large oscars (fish) in a 55 gal. tank in the livingroom, all our cats would sit on my then-husband's feet when he fed the oscars, hoping he'd drop some of the food. And the oscars would leap up and nip at Ed's wrist, hoping he'd drop more INSIDE the tank! Very funny to watch.

Have you thought about raising your tits, or your fatballs? Playtex do a thing nicknamed a "Hello Boys" for the former, the latter would better lifted by hand.
You could of course flatten your pussy, which would solve that part of the problem.
If you must keep the little crittur, perhaps a catflap would help. No not on the door, on the cat you fool!!

Tropical fish food is evil!

We have a half-acre pond full of koi and comets, both of which are non-carnivorous species. We feed them catfish feed, on which they seem to do just fine.

A couple of years ago we gave about a dozen smaller fish to our daughter to put in her aquarium. She fed them tropical fish food. After about a year, the largest koi ate everything else in the aquarium!

If tropical fish food can turn peaceful, docile carp into killers, just imagine what it might do to cats!

No, but there are birds around here that eat our catfood. The dry catfood sits in a raised bowl in a covered area just outside the backdoor. The local magpies, native pigeons and whatever else that flies seem to love it. From in the kitchen you can see and hear them pecking in the bowl and there is a flurry of wings as we go outside.

I think the cats are rather pleased too, because it gives them a chance to exercise their skill in chasing birds. Fortunately for the birds, they are usually too slow to catch them.

Martin, I can understand your disappointment about the pussy and tits, but fat balls??

Fat balls would be bloody bliss compared to the problem I'm having at the moment. We've just aquired a Jack Russell pup that has taken a liking to cat-crap and sheep turds and seeks them out at every opportunity. They give him the shits and make his breath rank, but he loves 'em, revolting little sod that he is.
The cats, however, seem content with what nature intended, bringing back daily batches of mutilated shrews, voles, mice, rats, moles, rabbits and tweetie birds. The best was a couple of weeks back when one brought in a whole widgeon. Needless to say, that was hastily removed from the cat's clutches, pucked and drawn and popped in the freezer. And, boy, was she pissed off (The cat, not the widgeon, I hasten to add. The widgeon was past caring)!

Giok, I have raised my fat balls as far up as I can reach, it was the bits that fell off it that the pussy had.... thus giving him the clear out of his short little life... The tits are content to come lower, but it's difficult keeping the balls out of the reach of the pussy.

I must add that the sweet little kitty has also has his fair shair of local fauna too.... ranging from baby mice, to a rat the size of a Jack Russell dog. It was the finding of a single bird claw under the sofa that really put the cap on it.

A couple of years ago some new people moved in next door to me. The lady of the house hung a bird feeder from the apple tree at the bottom of her garden. Soon after her neighbour spotted a rat in her garden and went totally apeshit!! The local pest controllers were called in and all hell broke loose.
Soon after that I overheard some of the local gossips expressing an opinion that it was my fault - presumably because my garden is untidi... more ecologically friendly than theirs.
A couple of days after the gossiping incident I glanced out of my kitchen window and saw a grey squirrel busily feeding at the bird feeder and scattering nuts, seeds etc. on the floor - where they were being consumed by a rat.
I made sure that I mentioned this to one of the gossips and then just sat back to watch the fun!

I can't see why people get so upset about rats but will let pigeons land on their heads and feed them from their hands.

You get more life threatening diseases from the bird than the rodent... a rat will make you unwell but a pigeon can kill you.

Liz, haven't you heard of Veil's disease? It's carried by rats, and fatal. You can catch it from water in ditches and streams where the rats lurk (though pet rats should be OK).

I have heard of Weils disease, and I knew someone who caught and recovered from it (he was eventually killed by something far more exotic), but I've never seen a rat eating vomit off the street, something that I've frequently seen pigeons do.

I hope you shot the grey squirrel - or North American tree rat, as I like to call it. Now the rats, they're preety indigenous (I think they came over with the Romans).

How about hanging the fat ball from a high (as high as you can (safely!) reach on your stepladder) and thin (too thin for the cat to climb along) branch of a tree.   Or you might try and contrive something with bits of string strung from an upstairs window out to a tree, and a vertical one hanging off that...?   No?    Maybe not.

I can see your reasoning, but there are no trees close enough to the back of the house to hang anything from, the windows are not really suited to that (no wooden frames to hammer nails into) and the dining room has a bay window which is impossible to reach over... it's 10ft high and I only have a 5ft step ladder.

It was the bits of ball that dropped off that the pussy ate... The nut peckers have no fat in them so they're much less pussy friendly.
