Pendennis in the Observer said it was England's entry. I wish!

I agree, the winner was actually a pretty good song and the singer would be worth listening to if you took away all the ESC rubbish.

I also agree, Terry Wogan's commentary is worth watching the whole lot of rubbish for. Cynicism is far too small a word!

Most of the songs were total crap - the winner this year was an exception; the thing is, the UK isn't the only country that clearly believes in putting forward absolute rubbish, it's just been doing it pretty consistently for longer than most countries, so it even lacks the over-the-top enthusiasm that the Eastern European countries bring to it.

The vote-for-your-neighbours thing is interesting - in the context of the former Yugoslavia it is quite impressive, given recent history in that part of the world. It doesn't always work that way between neighbouring countries with a history of conflict. Not many Polish votes for Germany, for example.

Didn't Celine Dionne do that winning song about 15 years ago? LOL Does this mean that now there's another one, Canada can be 50% less embarrassed?

The Bulgarian one at least had promise and power.

Interessting that our only votes came from Ireland (our neighbour) and Malta which we used to occupy and probably own (Not very clear on the politics here!)

I knew there was some reason that when it comes to current pop music I'd rather go with Alternative Indie instead. Top of my list is Wolf Parade Then again, I've rarely been a fan of mainstream anything.

Watching crap like Scooch and then Wolf Parade is sort of like the difference between seeing the Poppy Family and then the Stones in years gone by.

Yeh, fair play, Katrina was American, but in her own words, the music scene was far more cutting edge in Britain than it was in America, so she defected during the Reagan administration, i believe she escaped in a hot air baloon.

And really, does anyone here truly believe that if Britain took the Eurovision seriously, anyone else would stand a chance????. the best thing about the eurovision is listening to Terry Wogan, anyone remember when he got barred from the host country, he started emulating theyre rhyming commentary with cockney rhyming slang, it was hilarious.
Britain maybe shit at most things, but great inspirational music isnt one of them.

And why did Terry Wogan, an Irishman, keep referring to the UK as 'us'?

"Interessting that our only votes came from Ireland (our neighbour) and Malta which we used to occupy and probably own (Not very clear on the politics here!)"

Strangely Lynne, the voting by Ireland is probably political. If you look back, it has been almost a tradition for the UK to give points to Irish entries, but for no points to be awarded by the Irish to UK entries. The change of mood in Northern Ireland has altered the position vis-a-vis Anglo/Eire relationships.

Malta was not, and is not a British possession, but was of such strategic importance during WWII that britain pulled out all the stops to defend it from invasion.

Initially the RAF force on the island was three obsolete biplanes (Gloster Gladiators i believe), call signed faith, hope, and charity.

These held off the Italian airforce attacks until a squadron or two of Spitfires could fly in.

Malta took a hell of a pounding from enemy bombers which resulted in the whole island being awarded the George Cross, but still seem to be Anglophiles.

Paddy, I think that Terry has lived and worked so long in England that he regards it as home. He may even have accepted naturalisation when it was offered some years back. Certainly the English government who added his name to the honours list, resulting in his knighthood, seem to accept him as "one of ours" .

I think the votes for the UK entry from the Irish viewers might actually not have been that friendly. The only reason I can imagine voting for it would have been as an act ridicule.

"Malta was not, and is not a British possession" It was a British Crown Colony from 1814 until it became independent in 1964, and a republic in 1974. (And of course several of Cyril Tawney' songs are set in Malta.)

Looked like Bud Abbott, but she could sing all right. And she seems to have the right idea of what this contest ought to be about: "'I listen to music - I don't want to watch it, I want to listen to it."

I found that in a story headlined "The worst show in living memory" by a bloke who has written what sounds like a dreadful book about the song contest called Nul Points. (Since he opens by saying "I actually thought Flying the Flag by Scooch was a fine song in the true tradition of Eurovision" you can tell it must be a pretty dreadful book. And he clearly hates the idea that songs as such should have any significance in the event. So he says:

"What depressed me about it was encapsulated quite neatly by the Serbian girl who won. When she said, 'I listen to music - I don't want to watch it, I want to listen to it,' then I thought she'd completely missed the entire point of the Eurovision Song Contest."

What I think is:- the reason Wogan refers to the UK entry as 'us' because he's being paid to do the commentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Britain is 'us' as far as the BBC is concerned, and that's who he's representing.

I didn't see the ESC, but I've seen the Scooch thing. Woefully embarrassing, I thought it was. They ended the song by displaying a couple of Union Flags - I can't believe that anyone would think that triumphantly displaying your own country's flag is a good way to get people from other countries to vote for you, but there you are.

It's just occurred to me why that Scooch song presentatiion looked familiar, with the uniforms and the flags. It looked like an out-take from a Briticised version of "Springtime with Hitler".

Anyone else remember a dire UK sitcom called 'The High Life'? The pilot aired in 1994 and 6 episodes finally escaped in early 1995. It's set on an aeroplane, focuses on the lives of 4 staff members, one of whom is Alan Cumming. I remember it as being as camp as a row of pink tents and whenever I see/hear the Scooch thing, I can't help but think of that programme... the fact it only survived 6 episodes has to be a bit of a giveaway as to how it was recieved - from what I remember, the dialogue was the only good thing about it, but you had to have some understanding of polari and a certain amount of verbal dexterity to get the jokes. The theme song was perhaps the best remembered thing about the programme - with a dance routine that looks not a great deal unlike that of Scooch and his fellow stewards...

Hi Liz. 'Polari'? Didn't the beatniks do away with them by dressing up in those funny duffle coats and yomping around the country? And, I may be wrong here but, didn't they also sing 'polari, oh oh, cantari ho ho ho ho' and go on about some horsey type called Nell Blue de Pinto de Blue? Or am I confusing that with an Italian ESC entry?

The great Wogan has dual nationality because he was born before 1949. He was therefore able to accept a 'proper' knighthood when it was offered whereas Bob Geldof, born after 1949, has an honorary one. 1949 was the year when Ireland left the Commonwealth and became a Republic. Wogan was born a British citizen and apparently has the right to retain this.

Flag: v.i. Hang down, flap loosly; droop, fade, become limp; lag, lose vigour, grow languid; become uninteresting. (Concise Oxford Dictionary.)

Yes, all sounds very much in keeping with that song.

Guest, Paddy says Ireland fought for its independence and Wogan shit on that for a nighthood.

Is the constitution of the Republic really that shaky that it can be upset by a light entertainer accepting a meaningless title from a monarch that you no longer have anything to do with?

Or do have you spelt 'nighthood' that way on purpose? Meaning perhaps that Wogan is a sleeper for the IRA cell used to infiltrate the Royals and 'shit on' is his wake up phrase?

Wow! I knew that the Eurovision was the signal for the start of a revolution in Portugal but I didn't know it still had such deep and hidden significance...

:D

Wogan isn't that light.. have you seen him recently? He's no longer the sleek, lithe, racing snake that he once was... or maybe he's a racing snake that's just eaten an entire goat.
