Subject: donations to Mudcat from overseas

There I was (as a relative newcomer) reading that "Mudcat Accounts" thread with ever-widening eyes - and then I realised that it was an old thread that had been refreshed (for whatever reason)!!!
But, it got me thinking.
Like so many others, I get a lot of use and pleasure from Mudcatting (and "waste" a lot of time, my Partner has been known to snipe in less generous moments!!) AND I would, of course, like to contribute, to ensure that this incredible resource stays around.
However, I don't have a credit card and I don't live in the good ole USofA. Now I could send an international bank draft, but I refuse to use those robbing bastards, THE BANKS, any more than is absolutely necessary!!! (and the charge for drafts is extortionate ...)

So I wondered if someone who knows about these things, had ever set up some kind of overseas Mudcat account in the UK, or in Oz (where I reside), where we could send a cheque donation and every once in a while, the balance could be transferred to Mudcat, so only one lot of charging gets done.

Can any other 'Catters advise please, if this is possible / feasible / has been done etc. etc. etc.???
Cheers! R-J

In the UK I run an account for the sale of Mudcat Tee Shirts and patches in conjunction with Dick Greenhause. It works like this; Dick supplies the shirts,I sell the shirts or collect donations in UK pounds sterling and put the money into my account. Dick then pays Max in US Dollars, Dick then uses the money for record and CD buying in the UK. This cuts out any bank charges or fees for exchange and so mudcat gets all the money without any charges. Bill

The auction is another way of donating that may be worth considering.

It is perhaps wrong to talk money but this was how the last item I put in worked out. My maximum donation to Mudcat would have been £10. I put a sterling silver pendant in the auction and offered a choice of gemstone. OK, I had to shop for the bits and set the stone in the fitting but my outlay ended up around £6 plus what ended up as being air mail to the US (from the UK) - not very expensive for such a light item.

The item itself raised $26 which I think works out as more than my would be £10 straight donation and I think the "winner" ended up with something they like.

I'm not saying that all new items would go that way but I think items that involve a little bit of personal input are worth at try and perhaps more satisfying all round than a straight donation.

Just a thought,

Jon

Give to the DT instead. It is easy by credit card. Besides Dick gets only a few hundred a year, Max gets thousands.

The project Gareth has been setting up won't just be relevant to the UK, but will also be open for people in all parts of Ireland to pay in as well, since the banks have special arrangements.

Well I guess if serious funding is to become a subject I'm going to have to raise this one, if only to set my own mind at rest....

The "host" of Mudcat is/was OnstageMedia who are amongst other things, a web hosting company...

I find this page which tells me that OnstageMedia are the hosts and still refer to OnstageMedia having a TI (when MC went to a DSL).

If I use Netcraft and search. I find that CognitiveScience.org and Mudcat share the same IP address as http://www.help.mudcat.org (most probably a virtual server issue).

I guess my bottom line would be wishing to know as many other speculations are possible.

Jon
