Subject: watcha'say let's have our own festival
From: Lowcountry

Watcha'say let's find our where some of the Mudcatters are concentrated geographically and throw our own music festival? It might not have to be too organized: just get a big hotel to agree to hold rooms for a while, and that playing and singing will be allowed in lobby, in lounges, in guestrooms and on the grounds--at all reasonable times of day and night.

It seems that we are all over the world. If you're talking just the US it would seem the midwest would be a fair meeting place. But Someone coming from Oz would appreciate us havong it on the west coast. Someone in UK might appreciate it being on the east coast.

How about Hawaii?

Great idea Lowcountry! Name a time and place, I'll be there. NOT a hotel, though. I, for one, refuse to limit my singing to 'reasonable times and places'. I must sing when the time and spirit moves me.

We need trees, birds, flowers, water, and sky. With creeping sunrises (that few of us will actually see) and long lingering fire-to-purple sunsets. Black velvet night sky with peek-a-boo stars winking in three-quarter time as we sing and play around a smoldering fire. Camp?, perhaps for some; but I'd rather like the comfort of a cabin.

It has to be at least two days to make the trip worthwhile. I'm assuming, of course, it will be far from Ada, OK, although we have all the ambiance prerequisites. Perhaps those of us from afar, can stop enroute to make new mudcat friends; then journey on together to the next new-friend point; finally arriving en-mase at our oasis of song.

On the practical side, MUDSTOCK 99 (see previous thread) may have to be our festival of choice for this year. Nevertheless, I'm willing to add another venue.

Someone from the UK would appreciate having it in the UK not on the East Coast of the US.

I don't see why, given the relatively small size of the UK that some central place near a large city e.g. Manchester/Birmingham/London/Cardiff/Newcastle/Glasgow, that was already holding a folk festival, couldn't act a get together point for UK MudCatters.

I've been to places in Scotland ( Newcastleton ) and the North of England (Rothbury) where the whole town is given over to music for a few days so being able to play wouldn't be a problem - same is true on West Coast of Ireland during festivals.

In Newcastle there's the annual Fish Festival festival at North Shields/TyneMouth

Didn't someone say in an old thread on the same subject that they had a URL for all the UK festivals ?

Those of you on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States are invited to come to the Getaway sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington. It'll be the second weekend of October this year (Columbus Day weekend in the U.S.; Thanksgiving weekend in Canada). It'll PROBABLY be at Prince William Forest National Park just south (about 25 miles) of Washington, D.C., but the location is still tentative, so check the webpage at www.fsgw.org/getaway to keep up with the latest planning information about it.

We could have it at my house. I know people don't really think of NJ as a great spot, but boy, are they wrong.

Folk1234, I have creeping sunset, spectacular sunrises, trees, birds, flowers, water, and sky. I live right on a river, and half a block from a beautiful beach Our town is music oriented and there is always a large response to party.

Plenty of places to flop in my house.

...or, am I being presumptous. I don't mean to be. I just love my house. Actually, I'm only renting, because the owner won't sell. I plan to die here.

I have plans to attend the DC Getaway. I went last year and met my first Mudcatters. There was a rumor that Max might try to make it this year. Any word any body? It was a good time and I went in knowing absolutely no one. I told folks on the Mudcat I was going and I wore my Mudcat T-shirt. Dick came right up and said, "Hi, Roger". He figured me out right away.

So, all you East Coasters and others who can't get to Mudstock, come on over!!

Anna - I think New Jersey is wonderfully central to lots of folks, but then I live in central Jersey. But seriously, no location would get everyone, but the washington/maryland/pennsylvannia people could get there and so could the connecticut/massachusetts/new york people, so give it a try. Where are you Anna? You can answer on member email to keep it private if you wish.

How many people would be interested in a New Jersey gathering at Anna's house?

Given enough notice, I could make either New Jersey or Scotland (if I had a place to flop).

Or you could all sign on for a REALLY big challenge and come see me here in Wild, Wonderful Wyoming! Lord knows it's big enough...

And, we yodel...well, some of us.

Hi,

My house is in Sea Bright, NJ. right between the Atlantic Ocean and The Shrewsbury River. Right across the River is the mouth of The Navasink River. I just kayak across The Shrewsbury over to The Navasink and up that river I go. You can see the sunsets from our backyard, or, if you can get up early enough, walk half a block over to the beach to watch the sunrises.

We're very close (about 1/2 mile) from a natural reserve called Sandy Hook. For anyone thats interested, there is a nude beach there called Gunnison's Beach.

The rivers are salt water and I fish right off my dock.

I think it would be a fun weekend or week or whatever.

Anna's house sounds just fine. When??

I'm sure that there Mudcateers are going to get together at various times and places all over the world (The most central spot is about 4000 miles down) but please check with Max before finalizing any 'specific' event. Apart from general courtesy, there are many issues that you need to talk to him about. There's Tee shirts, advertizing, liability and permission if you plan to use the Mudcat name. Remember Max doesn't have time to read all the threads He and his elves have a full time job just keeping things running and up to date.

I hope to get to as many of them as I can.

Bert.

Perhaps we can meet, sing, ride together sing and/or convoy (and sing). KC and Katlaughing: It's amazing who you might meet just 'cattin' around.

I have a two week vacation to take whenever I like. I was going to take it the middle two weeks of August. That's when everything is most wonderful here.

This is so exciting!

Bert, you hope to get to as many of WHAT as you can.

Will this be an all out real actual festival? Do I need to notify the local guys and get permission? I've never done this before.

We have music all the time in our basement. Almost every weekend. In fact,we're having a jam this Saturday from 2PM til 2AM. In deference to our neighbors, the jammin stops at 12AM Sunday, but the party, discussions, playing CD's a little more quietly continues. Anyone that wants to can come sit in. We barbeque, and everyone brings food and drinks. We usually supply sodas, beer, wine. Who can't drive stays at our house. So far, everyone has been real respectful of our home and there have been no problems at all. People drop in and out all day. Theres always a theme. First Day of Spring, Celebration of Music, The Wall of Music, etc. We can have a Mudcat Festival. I haven't gotten my Mudcat tee shirt yet, but I hope to have it by August ;-)

Anna,

"THEM" is Mudcateer gatherings, there is bound to be more than one.

Re: Will this be an all out real actual festival? Do I need to notify the local guys and get permission?

It depends how big your house is versus how many people you expect. If you have make arrangements with a local hotel or campground then you shouldn't need much in the way of permission. But if you have to hire a hall or theatre then you might want to look into insurance to CYA.

You would need to get permission is if you intend to use public land or if you envision some crowd control or traffic or parking problems. For example, at a nearby house concert the hosts had to get parking permission, because it was permit parking on their street.

So decide When, then when you find out how many people you expect you can address the other issues.

I'll certainly be there if I'm free that weekend.

Bert

To everyone,

It is very exciting to think I might be hosting a mudcatters get together. My e-mail address is at my job, but I can receive any e-mail. If you're interested, please write me at apavao@bankofny.com. I will e-mail my phone number to anyone one who expresses an interest in coming out.

KC, if Katlaughing is interested, and I hope she is, perhaps you can come together. It's great that you're both from the same town. How long have you both been on Mudcat?

Susan of DT, Where are you? Would you like to come over this weekend for the jam? I will e-mail you my address and phone number.

Bert, I hope you can make it. My house is not real large, but we have plenty sleeping space. People can bring sleeping bags and/or tents. I can have about 4 tents outside. Our town is very liberal, it's a tourist community.

If August is not good for everyone, we can do it when it's convienent for most everyone.

Soon, Anna

Anna
I sent you a member e-mail with pphone, etc.
If you get 30 or so people who sleep on the floor and/or go to local hotels, it should not be a big problem. Is your place suitable for back yard camping? If it gets too popular, it would get out of hand if 100 people show up at one house.
I think we need several regional gatherings, rather than thinking of one massive get together, say 8 or so in the states, a few in Canada, a few in Australia, one or more each in England, Scotland, Ireland, ...
And remember to post which regular festivals you go to to collect a group to look for each other.

Annap; thanks for the invite. I'll be doing good to get to MUDSTOCK99 in Montana. I would LOVE to come your way, as my twwin grandsons are in CT and just turning a year on May 26th, but it'll have to wait this year.

I've been on the Mudcat since the end of Dec. 1998. An editorial on the Colorado massacre I just wrote was published here and in a national-by-subscription paper, in which I mentioned the Mudcat a lot. I'm hoping my article was what enticed her to join in. Course she may've known about it all along. At any rate, I am excited as all get out to have another Mudcateer in our wide and open spaces!

You guys are wonderful!

Bill, Even if we don't have the festival, you are more than welcome to come and visit. Let me know when and we'll arrange a jam for you. Do you like to fish?

Alison(Animaterra) Did you mean Saturday or the festival or just anytime? If you meant Saturday let me know and I'll send you directions. Kat, anytime. Referring to another thread about Catspaw, I loved your prayers. He has mine too.

I told my honey, Glenn, about this and he says any friend of mine is always welcome in our home. He loves any reason to make music.

What say new friends, shall we do this? Anyone else interested? I haven't heard from Max. I wrote him, but he hasn't responded yet.

Hi, Anna,

Duane D. & I are 2-2 1/2 hours away, I think, & would hope to attend a get-together. There are several events in the area in June already--Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival June 10-13, Clearwater Festival (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) June 18-20, and Old Songs (near Albany, NY) June 25-27. July or August would work for us. The mid-August would work fine for us, but it would be nice if we could include Bill. Probably the best thing to do is pin down a date & see how many takers you have. BTW, I *love* Sandy Hook! Thanks so much for the invitation!

best,

Wow! What a response. Thank you.

It looks like I may have had eyes bigger than my stomach, so to speak. I wasn't thinking 50-100 (maybe more) people. I was thinking 15-20 people. My house would be too small for a large number.

But..there is no reason we can't hold a Mudcatter get-together at my house. I'll have vacation the second two weeks of August. What say we put it together then?

Susan of DT, I promise it will be totally acoustical. No electricity. Susan and Dick Greenhouse came to a jam this Saturday, and I'm afraid it wasn't exactly what Susan was expecting. There was a lot of electric rock music at the time she and Dick arrived. Dick was able to join in a bit but, it wasn't as great as it could have been for them. After the left we had two acousticals and a mandolin. They did some beautiful stuff. All I could think of was I wished Susan and Dick hadn't left too soon. Next time.

We can hold it out on the Gazebo which is right on the river. Or in the basement, or in the backyard. We have wonderful neighbors.

As for the festival, Sandy Hook has a yearly jazz festival and I don't see any reason we couldn't start a Mudcat Folk Festival too. I could get all the info on the situation if anybody's interested. I know someone who could prepare food to sell, and we could sell Mudcat tee shirts as long as some of the sales went to the Environmental group. I think it's Clearwater. They have a Clearwater festival at Sandy Hook also. Shall I look into it? It would be fun.

Annap

I am from S.C. and would like to suggest a few potential venues in this area. The Lodge Alley Inn in Charleston has big loft suites and a huge enclosed courtyard with lots of benches and tables spread about. Santee State Park has camping, a few cabins, and a big rustic meeting room with a huge fireplace. Its restaurant specializes in--you guessed it. The Grove Park Inn in Ashville is expensive, but what a venue. The great hall is all stone construction and is the size of a big ballroom with an enormous fireplace. There are numerous outdoor terraces and grassy plateaus looking out over the mountains. Finally there are your basic-to-rustic beachfront hotels, like the Desoto in Tybee Island, (may be gone) the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach, and the Landmark at Myrtle Beach. Anybody interested?

To Everyone, Susan of DT made a suggestion when she came to my house on Saturday. (Susan, if I'm misquoting you, just let me know, please) There can never be just one Mudcat Festival because we are too spread out. So... why don't we have regional Mudcat Festivals? Here in Jersey, down in S.C, over in the UK, etc. Over in Wyoming, Montana, etc... I think that's a wonderful idea!! If we can make it out of our regions, great, if not, we can share it here with pictures, music, etc. We can steal ideas for our festivals from each other.

Anna

anna,

Plans sound good, so far, but I think you need to pin it down to a particular day/weekend, so you can get a head count & people can put it on their summer calendar.

best,

bbc

Ok, how about Saturday, August 14th, 1999. People can come earlier if they like and can leave Sunday night or whenever. It will be a totally folk/blues acoustic, no electric, weekend. Well, Glenn may want to drum a little. I can handle about 15 people. I can have a couple of tents in my yard facing the river.

It'll be fun. Anna

Wrightsville Beach sounds WONDERFUL!!

I'm 3-4 hours from there, and would love to help put together a gathering in this neck of the woods...
