Isn't that the Mudstock weekend? We can't be in two places at once

Blast! That's right! Ok,we don't want to put the two too close together, that would be too much I think. How about July 17th or 24th. Then Bill Sables could be here from the UK too. Is this good for everyone?

I hope someone will post a full account of Mudstock 99 and Annapolia '99 if they come off to make the rest of us jealous. ( I shall be emptying tavernas in Samos this year)

I'm not going to let this go away unless everyone changes their mind. Even if only one person wants to come, it'll happen. Having Dick Greenhouse and Susan over Saturday whetted my appetite for folk. It's been a long, long time since I was part of this. I've decided to try (TRY) to learn a song on my guitar. Maybe "Keep on truckin' Mama". Different thread.

All I need is the chords. (I'm just learning to play)

Anna--

You can count me and Tim in for 14 August, because we were tentatively planning on Mudstock 99. 17 July is out because we have a gig, 24 July is out because of Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, for which we have tickets. I don't have a problem with having regional Mudstocks on the same day--Kind of adds to the sense of commonality to me!

Geez!! Ok, tell you what, we'll have two! One on the same day as Mudcatter99, August 14, for those who can't make Montana, and one in July. If it were me, I'd have one every weekend, but I have to let my honey Glenn, have some time for his RnR jammin'.

This is going to be fun!! We'll jam right out on the gazebo which is right on the water. I'm going to learn that song!!

OK, tell you what- let's all just do what we want on Aug 14 never mind that some of us have been planning the get-together in Montana for two months. It'll save me the hassle of worrying about tee-shirts anyway..LEJ

Wait, don't get angry LEJ. Only people who can't make it to Montana (like me) and are around here will come to my house. And we'll be thinking about you guys.

Don't you think we'd much rather be in Montana??

This is not a festival, just a get together. You're invited to the one in July if you like..

I didn't mean to cause a problem. Anna

Anna, such generosity rarely creates a problem except in those who don't know how to graciously receive it. I think it is wonderful that you have invited us to visit with you at your home. I hope you will make it clear to us what you would want us to bring with us in terms of food, etc.

Right Allan...maybe I could get some lessons in grace from you.

Annap... I just think it might make more sense to keep all of these get-togethers informal. The idea for Mudstock was that an officially sanctioned Mudcat Cafe event was a good idea.I now think that is probably not a good idea. Good luck with your gathering, though.

Thank you Allen. I'm new and I was afraid I was being presumptous again. I've been know to jump into what I enjoy with both feet. I'm just so excited about this. I know a few folk/blues musicians around here that will want to join us too.

The only requirement, for those who decide to come, is you and your music. Anything else would be welcome. Food, drink, etc. There will be plenty here, but more is always good. Usually. Sometimes. ;-)

I hope you'll be here, Allen.

Annapolia'99. I like that.

LEJ,

An officially sanctioned Mudcat Cafe event is a wonderful idea. I wish I could be there. Why do you feel our little get together would in any way effect Mudstock'99? I will gladly recind my offer on August 14th if the general feeling is that it's going to upset it. Up til now we have not heard from you in this thread at all. Why didn't you mention something earlier?

MAX, where are you?

Annap- this is the latest in a series of threads to do with festivals, get togethers etc. In an earlier thread, I had suggested meeting at my house, and then was suddenly presented with the prospect of hundreds of people camped in my yard. I suggested we gather at an existing festival, which was being held Aug 14th in Columbus MT, and we jokingly called it Mudstock. There were requests for tee-shirts, a Mudcat camping area etc, and things that were starting to look like an organizer would be needed as the date approached. My feeling was that it would be a long way for many to come, and certainly gatherings in other areas would make sense, but not on the same day. I think that that would dilute the impact of what we were planning for Montana. BUT (and that's a big but)I am now thinking that what we were planning was probably more formal and required more of a time investment than I wanted to put in.

Let's just say I'll be at the Musician's Rendezvous on Aug 14th, 1999 in Columbus, Montana and I am hoping to see some of the Mudcat Phoaks there.

I certainly wouldn't think so, anna. I suspect the same people would not likely be able to go both places. Duane & I are available any of the three dates you mentioned. July 17th is the best, August 14th is 2nd, & July 24th is 3rd choice, but do-able. Don't lose heart!

AnnaP--

I'm not sure Mudcat is really organized to the point of being able to officially sanction anything. Sure, Max owns the website and provides the software. But a whole community keeps it going. It's rather complex in its structure--perhaps even anarchic.

I doubt that having an event at the Jersey Shore would seriously drain off a lot of people from attending something out near Yellowstone National Park. There are thousands of miles between the two venues. And while one or two people might actually travel a VERY long distance for a special event, most of us will choose to make music with our nearby neighbors and other mudcatters. A chance to make music in New Jersey sounds like a wonderful weekend excursion for me (from Maryland) because it's only a couple of hours of driving (well, 3 hours actually, but who's counting?). Because of proximity, it's an easy opportunity to make music together, and therefore I might take you up on it. On the other hand, a chance to travel to Montana is a wonderful idea, and might engender many fantasies, but ultimately is probably a pipe dream, since it involves a great deal of expense and effort to get there from the East Coast.

So let your events happen informally, and consider repeating frequently and regularly. If 5 or 10 people drop by once a month to make music with you, you'll probably have a lot more hours of fun than if 100 people show up once a year.

And the suggestion for Mudcatters to join in at the Folklore Society of Greater Washington Getaway in October is an informal and logical extension of what's happening anyway--even without publicizing here on Mudcat, we'd have close to a dozen Mudcatters show up anyway. The rest of y'all might just as well drop by.

Dear AnnaP: Don't feel bad or discouraged. Your exceptional generosity and hospitality will be rewarded many times over by the many good times and good friends you will enjoy. Earlier, I indicated that I would like to come to NJ from OK. At that time I did not know that your planned dates conflicted with Mudstock99, which I also plan to attend. So be it! When I'm next planning to be up NJ way, I shall contact you to see if we may share some music. There are all too few opportunities for some of us 'catters to meet and sing with others. We must go where we can, when we can. By the way, Mudstock is only 1369 miles from Ada, OK, while Sea Bright NJ is approx 1500 miles.

I would love to get to Mudstock 99 but I have to be back in England then. But I do hope to get to Mudstock 2000 wherever and whenever that is. Until then I just want to meet my new friends face to face when I come over to the U.S and play a few tunes together, so anna don't cancel your informal get together I am looking foreward to it very much. Cheers Bill

Maybe we should start thinking about a meeting place for summer of 2000, more centrally located to acommodate a bigger geographic cross-section of Mudcatters?

Really good idea, Ledge. Kansas City is pretty central; so is Memphis, with a "lean" toward the populous Northeast. So are Cincinatti and Chicago. I realize these are all cities, but they're all supposed to be pretty cool. 'Specially Memphis, lotta blues in Memphis. Watcha' think, everybody?

I, for one, absolutely LOVE the kind of location of MUDCAT 99 even though I can't make the trek. I reeeealy wouldn't want to have it in or very close to a major city. Just a personal preference. No justification or anything. - Well, you asked!

AnnaP, I'm in CT and would love to come down. July 24 is out but the other 2 dates are fine. Please let me know what is settled on. Also, I would prefer to motel it. Could you possibly suggest a couple of reasonably priced motels? Probably somewhere nearby but away from the coast would be best since summer prices would be too high and they are probably booked by now. I would probably want to drive down on Friday and back on Sunday. This sounds like fun and a nice chance to meet some 'catters, to say nothing of a great day of singing!

Hi Everyone,

I was out sick from work with a cold yesterday, so I couldn't respond. I feel much more positive today, especially after reading the responses. I definitely will hold the get togethers. July 17th seems to be good, and August 14th.

Everyone that's interested can just send me an e-mail or personal message and I will give them my address, phone number, and directions. My e-mail address is apavao@bankofny.com.

I'm going to tell some of my local friends as well as Glenn's brother (he plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin). This is going to be such fun. I hope we have a real good turnout.

I just have to learn "Keep on truckin' Mama" now.

Love, Anna

UK 'catters: Betraying my colours, I and many others will be at Cropredy. A bit expensive, but plenty of time to 'bump into each other'.

Like many others, I always carry my 'family flag' to festivals - Green field, 3x3, white hare and moon. Look for that, come over, and extend a paw.

Looking forward to meeting some of you. So, anybody going?

Anna, it sounds luscious, but for practical reasons we don't get that far out of town very often. But I'm hoping....

LEJ, Charlie Baum is right, lots of us in the East can't even think about going to Montana this year (maybe ever), but a trip to New Jersey is a possibility. Anna's "do" will necessarily be fairly small, so don't think it will draw any people away from Mudstock 99.

I don't think all the Mudcatters will ever get together, but that doesn't mean we can't meet and sing as often as we can work it out. I hope you'll still try to arrange for an area where Mudcatters can meet and/or camp at Mudstock 99, even if I can't be there I want it to happen! - Rita Ferrara
