Can't say as I'm shocked by the news, sadly.

From CNN:

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Music industry mogul Phil Spector was detained Monday following an early morning homicide in the town of Alhambra outside Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Alhambra, California, police received a 911 call at 5 a.m. (8 a.m. ET). Officers responded to the house near the intersection of Grandview and Valley. At the scene police found one woman dead and took Spector into custody.

The sheriff's department said it considers Spector a suspect in the case.

Spector worked with such artists as the Beatles, The Righteous Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner. Spector's Wall of Sound stands as a landmark in recording history. His work produced some of rock's best loved music.

I found this at the rock and roll hall of fame site.

Phil Spector is among the greatest producers of rock and roll, and some would passionately argue that he is the greatest ever. His ambitious approach to the art of record production helped redefine and revitalize rock and roll during its early-Sixties slump. On a string of classic records released between 1961 and 1966 on his Philles label, he elevated the monaural 45 rpm single to an art form. "Little symphonies for the kiddies," he called them, and they were indeed dramatic pop records possessed of a grandeur and intimacy theretofore uncommon in rock and roll.
He was born Harvey Phillip Spector in the Bronx in 1940. He picked up guitar and piano in high school and began writing and recording original songs with classmate Marshall Lieb. Joined by a third friend, Annette Bard, they formed the Teddy Bears and had a Top Ten hit with "To Know Him Is to Love Him." Spector was 17 years old. His creative genius as a writer/producer flourished, as he cowrote the classic "Spanish Harlem" with Jerry Leiber (of Leiber and Stoller), a soul hit for Ben E. King. In the early Sixties, he produced hits for such artists as Gene Pitney ("Every Breath I Take"), Curtis Lee ("Pretty Little Angel Eyes") and the Paris Sisters ("I Love How You Love Me"). In 1961, he co-founded the Philles label with partner Lester Sill, and was immediately successful with "There's No Other (Like My Baby)," by the Crystals.

Spector utilized the studio like no producer before him. In exploring its possibilities, he constructed a musical monolith known as the "Wall of Sound." The chief ingredients in the Wall of Sound ñ a massive and cavernous roar created by the fusing of many individual instruments ñ were maximum volume and liberal use of echo. Spector exhibited a singular knack for matching talented singers with expert session musicians and wonderful songs. He worked his charges through endless takes as he tried to realize the sound he heard in his head. Several of the many timeless Spector-produced hits that stand as a testament to his genius include "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "He's a Rebel" and "Then He Kissed Me" (by the Crystals); "Be My Baby," "Baby, I Love You" and "Walking in the Rain" (by the Ronettes); "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide" (by the Righteous Brothers); and "River Deep - Mountain High" (by Ike and Tina Turner).

After the glory days of Top Forty radio began waning in the late Sixties, Spector's impact inevitably ebbed as well. However, he adapted to changing circumstances and went on to produce the Beatles (Let It Be), John Lennon (Plastic Ono Band) and George Harrison (All Things Must Pass), plus acts ranging from Cher to the Ramones.
Peace. Rustic

He has a long history of violence, particularly with weapons. Nearly everyone he worked with has a story of him pulling a gun on them.

Let's not jump to conclusions? Please. Looks like he has been caught red handed.

Another excerpt from CNN:

The reclusive Spector, 62, was arrested at his sprawling home in Alhambra after a report of a shooting about 5 a.m. Monday (8 a.m. ET). Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Faye Bugarin said the woman was pronounced dead at the home, which is modeled after a Pyrenean castle.

Alhambra police arrested Spector on a first-degree murder charge shortly after 6 a.m., with bail set at $1 million. No court appearance was immediately scheduled.

The victim's identity has not been released. Her body had not yet been removed from the home early Monday afternoon.

It was not clear whether the 911 call reporting the shooting came from Spector's home or a neighbor. Neighbors questioned by CNN said they had not heard a shooting.

Prominent defense attorney Robert Shapiro told CNN he is representing Spector. Shapiro was part of football star O.J. Simpson's winning legal team in Simpson's 1995 murder trial.

Attorney Marvin Mitchelson, a close friend of Spector's, told The Associated Press the producer lived alone and didn't have a girlfriend.

Mitchelson said he and Spector had been trying to put together a movie about Spector's life. "His mental state has been great -- very rational, very together," the attorney said.

the victim has been identified
looks like the house cost a million..
and the car cost a million..
and the bail cost a million...

Spector, 62, whose ``wall of sound'' technique transformed 1960s pop music, was freed Monday night after posting $1 million bond. He had been arrested before dawn after the body of 40-year-old Lana Clarkson was found, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Richard Westin said.

Clarkson was believed to have been a TV and film actress. Authorities wouldn't comment on her occupation or what her relationship was to Spector.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Daniel Rosenberg said Clarkson was found in the foyer of the mansion, which is 15 miles northeast of Los Angeles. He said deputies found the weapon used in the slaying but declined to say where in the house it was located.

The call reporting that shots had been fired came from inside the residence, Rosenberg said. Authorities towed away a black Mercedes-Benz.

``I heard the boom, boom, boom. It was about three or four shots,'' neighbor Terrie Arias told Los Angeles television station KNBC. ``I just ignored them because I never thought it was a shooting.''

Spector lived alone and didn't have a girlfriend, according to close friend Marvin Mitchelson, a prominent Los Angeles attorney. According to records, Spector bought the house in 1998 for $1.1 million.

I once took a recording course on record production offered in L.A. which was held at the now-defunct Ash Grove. Phil Spector presided. He was very nervous, quick-witted, and at the ready to respond to anything he would consider negative. I was naive. I asked him (because I was interested in raising money for recording) how he raised his money to do his recording. It was intended as a question which I felt concerned many who were interested in financing or capitalizing a session. His answer was, "None of your damned business!" Years later, I pondered his response. I was thinking about the early days of rock and roll and it's association with the underworld. Maybe there was something I really didn't want to know and he probably was right in sparing me the gory details.

Hey, you were lucky he just swore at you, Frankham. He was probably armed! And you made him more paranoid...

The underworld stuff didn't end in the early days either. I have a mid-80's Rolling Stone with a story on a mobster takeover of a record company. And of course many successful rock bands--the dot-coms of their day--invested heavily in the drug biz.

Shouldn't make light of it. It's just so goddamned Hollywood...LAWood...Sunset Boulevard...

Having lived twenty years (too long) in the LA area, I agree with you completely. It's really amazing the drug trade that still goes on and has found its way into the movie industry.

I taught Phil's ex wife Annette guitar for a while in the 60's and she was a very nice lady.

Spector was a talented guy. Innovative. "The Big Hurt" by Gogi Grant was the first record to employ the signal processing device known as "phasing".

But I believe that the commerical music business can drive a performer nuts. Note to all those singer-songwriters out there who want to catch the brass ring. More'n likely you'll fall off the horse.

An especially fascinating detail to me is the address, which is less than a mile from the house i lived in from 3rd grade, until I left home, age 20.
It was working class then & very dismal - I wonder if it's really changed that much?? I was last there in 1980, and it was gang-infested and VERY rough.
I can just see him buying a mansion in El Sereno (barrio to the hilt) unless, as i say, things have done a reversal in the past 20 yrs. It's almost symbolic of his life.

Didn't the advent of stereo kill Spector's career? That's what I read once. He developed the 'Wall of Sound' and considered it perfect. Then technology went and changed on him and he just retired. I wonder how he'd feel about computers? Pac Man guy in a Play Station world?

Casting my mind back to childhood in Alhambra, i remember hearing of a place called "the Alhambra Castle",(in Alhambra, not Spain, hard though that was for me to believe).
I never had occasion to see it. I would sure love to see photos of it, and the surrounding neighborhood.
Somebody mentioned that Brian Wilson was a big fan of "Be my Baby". So was I, and now I understand why The Beach Boys' "Do it Again" has always been my favorite of theirs - it sounds a lot like Be my Baby, now that i think of it.

His dad committed suicide when he was 9. He wrote his first hit when he was 17 and the title was taken from his dad's gravestone: "To know him is to love him."

Katlaughing,

I read the blurb. It's so weird because I was a grade ahead of Spector at Fairfax HS in Los Angeles. I believe the Herb Alpert was also in that same class. Another interesting notable is Norm Cohen who wrote the great folk music book "Long Steel Rail". I don't know when he went there.

Socorro,

I remember the LA that you do. I lived in City Terrace as a small child. It's all barrio now. Can't go there. The Rifas have taken over. Never saw Spector's Alhambra residence, though.
