May Spaw get un-sick and back to being the normal-for-him variety of fucked up. (Lots of good cussing in this thread!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw From: katlaughing Date: 10 Sep 09 - 05:10 PM Very funny, ya'll. Just spoke with Karen. He is still "awful" which I know you all will be so glad to hear.:-) However, his fever is still up there, about 102 and they are still giving him meds, fluids, etc. Karen is positive they will get him past whatever virus it is and be able to send him home by Saturday. She is glad he's there and not at home. She said he will do mind games at home, sucking it up and telling himself he won't be sick; then when he's finally convinced to go in, when they get amongst the docs and nurses, etc. he just kind of lets go and is really sick. I don't think it is a white coat phobia, either.:-) Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of his heart bypass surgery. Thirteen years!! I am so grateful he has made it this far and am breathing deeply for him. I don't "feel" any panic or anything. I think Karen has a good handle on it. She's going to call me tomorrow morning, after she gets off work, with an update. We love you, Spawdarlin', kat & my Rog |

Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw From: Rapparee Date: 10 Sep 09 - 06:07 PM I guess he needs more than the Beano, huh? When I was younger I had a fever of 104 F. and they gave me enemas.* Think that might help? Or isn't the hospital equipped for such an amount? *Didn't work, so I had an IV drip of antibiotics for 8 hours. Witch hazel rubs didn't work either. |

Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw From: SharonA Date: 10 Sep 09 - 06:32 PM Funny that folks here should mention enemas. Ironically, it would be a taste of Spaw's own medicine; he was all set to administer a hot lead enema to me just two weeks ago! If what goes around comes around, it sure sounds like it's coming around the back... :-) Spatsclaw, ya bloody flux, get well and get on home. You owe me a subscription! SharonA |

Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw From: katlaughing Date: 11 Sep 09 - 12:06 PM Okay, just spoke with Karen. The good news is his white blood cell count has gone down, so the antibiotics must be helping. She reiterates she has seen him a lot worse, but it does not seem good, just yet. He has been "upgraded" to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) because they couldn't keep his O2 up with just a mask. He is on BiPap for now, which he hates when he is awake, but which is keeping his O2 sat rate at around 97 which is good. They drew blood gases three times last night. I don't know if any of you have had that done, but it hurts like hell. Karen said his PH levels are all messed up. With the BiPap, that should improve. He has a little bit of infiltration in his left lung.It is some sort of virus which he probably picked up from her or the kids and just hasn't been able to to kick like they did or like he did a few years ago. She figures he will still be in there through Monday, at least, which is when she will have to go back to work. She's been able to take a couple of days off, plus he is in the same hospital where she works, so she can sneak off to see him on a break now and then AND, at least she doesn't have a long drive between work, home, and caregivers for Tris and Michael. She said cards would be welcome and i just checked the hospital site for an addy. This is pretty neat, the hospital has a thing set up where you can send an e-card direct from Their Site. Not a lot of variety, but it's free and easy for those who may not be able to get out to the post office, etc. To make sure it goes to the right person, fill in the blanks with the following: Patient's Name: Pat Patterson Hospital: Mt. Carmel East Room Number: ICU Karen was nesting this morning when she got home. Did a bunch of laundry etc. She was glad we talked, said she'd be able to sleep once she'd caught us up on the latest. I asked her frankly if she was being optimistic for everyone else's sake and was really concerned this might go south and she told me no, that she really has seen him worse. She is a scientist and has such a laid-back, calm manner. She told me of course she *thinks* about his possible passing all the time, but this just isn't the time. I believe her instincts are spot on. Here's the snail mail addy:

Bishop's visiting our church this weekend -- I believe I'll have her say a prayer or two. Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: Little Hawk Date: 11 Sep 09 - 02:21 PM Thanks for the info, Kat. I'll be sending a card ASAP. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: Rapparee Date: 11 Sep 09 - 02:42 PM I agree, CB. I'm sick and tired of all these sick people. You'd think this was a hospital or something. By the way, I understand from some friends I still have in Ohio that Spaw has been transferred to the NYCFTTS. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: My guru always said Date: 11 Sep 09 - 06:04 PM Thanks so much for the updates Kat, just caught up with this thread. I'm having to set up a candle-sharing scheme here in the Cottage with so many people that I'm sending positive thoughts to, otherwise the place will go up in smoke!!! I think I've managed to send an ecard, (fabulous idea, thanks for the link), but I did end up back at the start (just like snakes & ladders) so I can't be sure. Sending love & hugs (sorry, no witty stuff) to Spaw & Karen. Hil x |

Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: katlaughing Date: 11 Sep 09 - 10:41 PM That's brilliant, Art! I am sure that will get a big chuckle out of him when he comes to! LMAO! Folks, thanks for sending the ecards. With the limited choices I figure he oughta get at least 4-5 of each without the new baby ones being sent.:-) It says in the fine print that they print them off and hand-deliver them, so I am sure he will see them. Pretty nifty, huh? I will let ya'll know as soon as i hear anything new. I am still feeling pretty good about this. His good karma, from all of the giving and love he's spread throughout his days of foster-parenting with Karen and from being the incredible dad he is to their boys and from being a truly, genuine friend, will get him through. Well, that and several thousands of dollars of drugs and medical care.:-) luvyakat |
Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: olddude Date: 11 Sep 09 - 10:49 PM I guess I will feel a lot better when I know he is home ... The old goat is driving me nuts worrying about him ... Once I see a few good insults posted from him then I and everyone else will breathe easier I think |
Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: katlaughing Date: 11 Sep 09 - 10:58 PM I know, olddude, but remember worrying doesn't help you or him...in fact I am convinced worry did my mother in; so maybe try to keep an image of him at home, at the computer, firing off an insult or two and keep that healthy image in your mind and blow all that worry out and away!:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Spare thoughts for Spaw & KarenSpaw updated From: Rapparee Date: 11 Sep 09 - 11:39 PM Yeah, don't worry. The last spontaneous words my mother spoke to me (I'd awakened her) were "...and don't come back!" No, sorry, they were "I'm worried, very, very worried." The others were the last words she said to me when I left home. So don't worry about Spaw; just be concerned about worry. Worry about that for a while. Worry worry around like a puppy would worry a chew toy. |
