Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: WyoWoman Date: 13 May 01 - 11:43 PM During my son's Black Tee Shirt days, when he was surly and pretty much emotionally unavailable much of the time, Doug Adams' quirky humanity kept us connected by providing common ground and a basis for communication. This is sad news, but look at what a huge contribution he made during his too-brief time here. Would that we all could use our light so splendidly during our round-trip visit to this planet. And just think: Now he and Henson can get on with that awesome collaboration ... WyoWoman |

Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: catspaw49 Date: 14 May 01 - 01:59 AM I even used in him sales training to illustrate a point. Remeber that though 42 was the answer, no one except the super computer knew what it meant because they had failed to ask the right question. All selling is based on the ability to ask questions and not to be deterred if you get an answer you cna't deal with of don't understand.....there is always another question. Reading this thread it's obvious he had a lot of fans among us here. Almost every post has douglas Adams catch phrase and often several. Are you all as amazed as I am at the number of things we now say almost daily which come from his work? Spaw (Feeling as though a Vogon is reading poetry to me) |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Marion Date: 14 May 01 - 02:18 AM The Douglas Adams phrase that I use most is "Somebody Else's Problem field". I once cited Adams' work in university when I was doing a project on the case for Christ's resurrection - it was from one of the Dirk Gently books, about how the impossible can be easier to believe than the extremely improbable. Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Fibula Mattock Date: 14 May 01 - 04:45 AM What a loss. So long and thanks for all the books. |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: KitKat Date: 14 May 01 - 05:37 AM So farewell then Douglas Adams. We'll meet in the restaurant at the end of the universe... Pat |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Noreen Date: 14 May 01 - 06:21 AM It's lovely hearing all these phrases of his that bring a smile to the face to all these disparate people. My 13 year old son has read the 'trilogy' in the last few months. I just knew he would love the books- and I rediscovered them with him. (Brain the size of a planet....!) A great loss. |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Les from Hull Date: 14 May 01 - 06:40 AM Terrible news. Now I'm really depressed. I've got a pain in all the diodes down my left side. Les |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: John J Date: 14 May 01 - 09:10 AM Oh how sad. 42 times. JJ |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: mousethief Date: 14 May 01 - 11:32 AM "I thought some of the metaphysical imagery was particularly effective." I am very saddened by this news. Along with the collected works of Monty Python and the movie The Princess Bride, the Hitchhiker's Guide is one of the most quotable works in the all-too-narrow world of exquisite silliness. I have always felt an affinity for Adams's zaniness. It occupies just that place in the constellation of comic genius that a brick doesn't. Alex

Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Lanfranc Date: 14 May 01 - 04:58 PM John Hartford going, Douglas Adams gone. I'll give up Mudcat if all I get is bad news like this. Only Vogon poetry can express my grief.
dhbln fskog kligbohnolkdghinl if you require a monument, read the books, listen to the radio programs, watch the videos. Goodbye, Douglas Adams, and thanks for all the laughter.

Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Bagpuss Date: 15 May 01 - 07:02 AM I suppose there is no chance that he is spending a year dead for tax purposes? Bagpuss - who will always describe the smell of her empty biscuit tin as "lindisfarne" |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: GUEST,deepblue@circleofsouls.com Date: 15 May 01 - 02:42 PM Had to post some comments. Douglas Adams - Good Journey, man. The Hitchiker's Guide (the first three books, anyway) are my Bible. I recommend it to anyone who takes life and society too seriously. Cheers, Douglas. deepblue@circleofsouls.com |

Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Bagpuss Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:37 AM Just a quick note to interested parties in the UK. BBC2 are screening H2G2 starting on 30th July (about 11.30pm) with a documetary/tribute to the late Mr Adams showing in August. Set your videos now! Bagpuss |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Helen Date: 18 Jul 01 - 07:25 PM I just finished the Douglas Adams computer game, called Starship Titanic. The very end of the game is a video of Douglas playing the part of one of the characters. It was published in 1998 and he looks very sick in the video. The character says some things like "my life is over, my work is done" and that he is going fishing. In hindsight it is a fitting tribute. Helen |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Jul 01 - 07:28 PM He's made up to look sick in that footage Helen.. Good game though eh! I beat it a couple of months ago, and then read the book... Not half bad... Not at all.. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Helen Date: 21 Jul 01 - 06:35 AM I guess you're right, Clinton. How silly of me. The video quality wasn't wonderful, so it was a bit hard to tell. It was mainly around his eyes that made him look sick, dark circles etc I have the music stuck in my head now. It was clever use of music throughout the game, I thought. Did you notice that there were three levels of orchestration in the lift, as you go past each passenger class level: first class = full(ish) orchestration, 2nd class = a slightly less orchestrated version, and SGT class = piano arrangement. I thought that the music room stuff was clever too - using a mixing panel idea, and hearing the differences in the music depending on what the sound levels were. Helen |
Subject: RE: Douglas Adams has died From: Clinton Hammond Date: 21 Jul 01 - 01:25 PM My favorite was still the parrot... ;-) |
Subject: OBIT From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Jul 01 - 01:39 PM refresh |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Douglas Adams has died From: Helen Date: 22 Jul 01 - 12:11 AM I read an interview with DA and he mentioned that Terry Jones considers the parrot to be his best character role. http://www.apple.com/applemasters/interviews/dadams/index6.html He had so many plans for future projects. Maybe he's up in heaven inspiring some other creative people now. Helen |
