The interview went according to plan. The suit did look a little like a heavy day at the desalination plant, but I managed to snap the largest crystals off. The only sticky moments were when asked what were my greatest motivators are; I responded with "The voices in me head" and stared in an unfortunate and prolonged manner at the panel. And I regret the bit about my interests outside work. I think that "a bit of DIY" and "doin the garden" was more acceptable to them than explanations about naked cycling with me wife, Gary, my dairy farm and ameteur drivelling. Still, it wasn't a bad performance. I will keep you informed.

I did get a bit tired last night and wisely turned down D Whistle Division's offer of a lift. I missed a good session by all accounts. I will try to feel a little less gloomy this evening get me arse down to Goxhill. Cheers everyone.

Hi Pipes, John, Deano,Hase crowd from last night, Specky, et all.The waters of the Humber are their usual muddy self but I am sure I can see Smallpiper hunched over his keyboard in the flat "down by the riverside". Hope to be in Goxhill tonight, depends on "stuff". Going to try to join this Muddy thing today but will have to be an irregular contributor cos the `puter dont work in the murky depths of the Humber so have to go to Hessle Library with my Library card clutched under a flipper and log on from there.

Heloo mick, i am glad you enjoid your curry, we was voted the best curry ship last yeer by the Ull Daily Mail, if you like hot currys, you should get a chicken phall, it is 5 times hotter than a vinder loo, if you tell them you are a stewed ant, you will get a 10 percent discount. last night i was at the hase, i saw that tall horse puncher there 9pete) it was good there was loads of peepol there. You should go there sometime, it is an irish session, so yoo could take your'e irish drum, 9dont go next time though, because there isnt a session next time because all the peepol are going to whitby.john

mick PS. i am going to whiby so i will see yoo there, i went last year it was really nice, i saw raggytash at mrs ducks barber queue, mrs duck said i looked miseruble and not talking to her and not having any dinner, but this is because i felt really shit , from having to many bears the night before.we dont see yoo at The tAp & spile anymore, it used to be a good session there, but it is a bit shit now, 9not many peepol going), i told gordon the bass about it, he went and i asked him if he like it, he said "it was a bit shit, because not many peepol there". I think mudcat will be vert quiet at whitby time because all the peepol will be at whitby, yoo can get them portable computers now, 9they are called liptops) but they are really expensive 9about a thousand quid!) probably a big rip off. John the smallpipes-you are, welcome to play my instrument any time you like, i lent my whislte to Willa as well. I still thinking aboot getting one of them irish drums, i dont know yet.john

Thanks john, but I verily believe my phal days are over (god, the chalfonts!!)go more now for spicy not heat.next time i see you i will give you my special recipe for brussel sprout curry, excellant and cheap. Thanks for your special invite to the hase, this has been a closely guarded secret, other horse punchers did not tell me about it.Long time since I was in 'ezzle, is hase a boozer?

Take your point about Tap,you must understand some of the regular attenders have now left the town,Jock and Sheila to Whitby,Harpmaker and Chrissy to bev.

I have talked to Theresa about the poss of a sunday afternoon session once a month based loosly on the very succesful Nellies bev, session and she seemed keen, but as yet not contacted me. I will follow this up on my return from the whitby

don't whant to see you gloomy at whitby,if you do feel that way come and have a bear session with me,it will be merry if not exactly cheap.I may well invest in a hamster to keep brian company.

re: laptops,I do own one,but will not be taking it as I once saw one of our illustrious mudcatters using one at a sing around in lieu of a song book,we can take technology a little to far.I realy do prefer the Traditional method of actually learning a song before singing it (wharts and all ).Any way it will give us a well deserved rest from the drivel pool. But we shall be back!!!!!!!!!! Drivel on oakiepoos!!!

A note on the Hase session it is not an Irish session (this implies fast and furious rigs and jeels) it was origionally a scottish session (started by two scottish smalpipers) but has expanded to include anything and everything musical. Having said that it is first and formost a musicians night although we don't mind the occasional song.

Yes Ossonflags, the only way to express the meaning in a song is via WindowsXP, Microsoft Powerpoint and an Intel Pentium 3, projected onto a far wall through the laptop. WAP is very useful too, though more suited to slow airs. However, I do feel a little self- conscious when playing dots projected into my 3D virtual reality helmet, but it is in keeping with the tradition.

Anyway, Ossonflags you luddite, stop having a go at us Fly-by-Wire Folkies. There is nothing more satisfying to see a session gently accompanied by the hum of a multitude of Comaqs and Dells, with a pile of liptop bags stacked behind the piano. And such joy, when a song has finished to see the clamour of the assembled throng as they try to align their infra-red ports to pass on the oral tradition in the time honoured way. Learning the thing from memory indeed. What are you like?

Eh??????? Ossonflags is a singer?????? and I was supposed to know that?????

Oh well never mind all I can say is sorry but all are welcome as I've said before. Its just that the Hase was never intended to be a singers night although we do welcome the occasional songster and have even been known to encourage some singers and discourage others thats just the way it is.

Also there's this etiquete thing you know the one; Someone sings a song and everyone has to keep quiet and applaud afterwads yet paradoxically someone plays a tune and all the singers talk loudly all the way through it .... I don't get it, hence the reason I try and avoid singers sessions. Not that I don't like singers I do but there is a time and a place for everything and I should know I play the pipes for gawds sake.

smallpiper, I find it incredible you didn't know I was a singer when my original "Hase thread" mentioned punch the horse also pretty broad referances to singing,in that and many other threads.

Getting a tad confused here, you say all are welcome, then you say you try and discourage some singers, whats all that about,or am I missing the point.

In your previose thread you talk about all types of music, well, I have been singing for more years than I care to mention and always thought singing was music.

Regarding the "etiquette thing",I have always given best of order to everyone, whether good bad or indifferant, that does include instrumentals. That is not etiquette that is just good manners and respect.Any one who gets up in front of people to do any thing musical or poetical deserves that.Sadly over the years I have observed that kind of respect dissapear, not just in this country but in Ireland as well, were I visit quite a lot.But the thing that realy depresses me is that the people who should know better, musicians/ singers are usually the ones most at fault.

Unlike you I do not try and avoid anything musicly,or otherwise, especially places were I can contribute to the event, and hopefully improve and learn a little, and give respect and encouragement to people who have come to do the same.I believe we are missing the point somewere if we keep following the preciouse idea of a time and place for everything and every body.

Believe me, I was around during the late fifties and early sixties "Folk Revival" and saw similar attitudes destroy some bloody good folk clubs,as you can see there is not one folk club left in Hull

As I said before, thanks for the info.have got the message loud and clear, couldnt be more clearer than after your last post.

Mick McGarry -lead singer with Punch the Horse

You may not actually realise it but I'm a bit of a PTH fan. I think that what you do is great and I'm not being at all precious the singers I try to discourage at our session are those who think they can sing but can't (one example had the entire pub in an uproar and was embarrasing herself so was asked not to sing but we tollerated her for three sessions before pulling the plug). I've been around a long time too and I've seen the errosion of good manners both here and abroad, but it dosn't mean we have to tollerate it.

And I don't think that you've got the message at all in fact I think that you are missing the point completely.

I will restate: there are lots of different session some sing arounds, some mixed and some musicians sessions, all are welcome to ours but because of the origional intentions of the session i.e. to allow something different (how many scottish sessions in england do you know of). The session, as all sessions, has changed and as such it is a great melting pot of styles and that is great. But the point is that it is a musicians session that WELCOMES (I repeat WELCOMES) occasional singers. SO tell me whats wrong with that?

In the next installment, Oakley goes to move his herd of 18 Fresians to the cow shed, feeds 'em and goes to the Hope and Anchor still in his overalls before a long hot soak in the bath and an hour on DEFRA livestock returns. But wakes up and finds the entire thing including the job interview and the spat between Ossonflags and Smallpiper, has been a dream.
