The other way of course is to arrange some kind of vote-twinning.

So if you like Obama but live in some state where it is inconceivable that he could win, you get in touch with someone in a swing state who prefers Obama to McCain, but who fancies registering a vote for Nader. And you agree that they vote for Obama, and you vote for Nader.

You could do it via the Mudcat with someone with whom you've been arguing about these things. Of course you'd need to trust each other, but what's wrong with that?

Danny C, Thanks for posting that message from Bill Brown.
I admit, I had my doubts about Obama, but seeing how he voted on all those issues has convinced me he's the right man for the job.

Now, if only I had a vote....

These are the bad things!

· Supports granting driver's license to illegal immigrants.
· Supports extending welfare to illegal immigrants.
· Voted yes on comprehensive immigration reform.
· Supports affirmative action in Colleges and Government.
· His religious convictions are very murky.
· Voted No on prohibiting law suits against gun manufacturers.

As with all phobias, a xenophobic person is aware of the fear, and therefore has to genuinely think or believe at some level that the target is in fact a foreigner. This arguably separates xenophobia from racism and ordinary prejudice in that someone of a different race does not necessarily have to be of a different nationality. In various contexts, the terms "xenophobia" and "racism" seem to be used interchangeably, though they can have wholly different meanings (xenophobia can be based on various aspects, racism being based solely on race and ancestry).

For xenophobia there are two main objects of the phobia. The first is a population group present within a society that is not considered part of that society. Often they are recent immigrants, but xenophobia may be directed against a group which has been present for centuries. This form of xenophobia can elicit or facilitate hostile and violent reactions, such as mass expulsion of immigrants, or in the worst case, genocide.

The second form of xenophobia is primarily cultural, and the objects of the phobia are cultural elements which are considered alien. All cultures are subject to external influences, but cultural xenophobia is often narrowly directed, for instance at foreign loan words in a national language. It rarely leads to aggression against individual persons, but can result in political campaigns for cultural or linguistic purification. Isolationism, a general aversion of foreign affairs, is not accurately described as xenophobia.

Of course the problem here is world wide human population growth, and the part that migration plays into it.

I think the distinction between racism and xenophobia is quite important.   One way and another a degree of xenophobia - fear of, or suspicion towards outsiders - is something that crops up in all kinds of times and places, and it's probably true to see it as natural enough.

Racism is something else. The focus for racists isn't strangers and outsiders, it's liable to be neighbours picked out on the basis of some insignificant physical difference, who may well be essentially indistingishable in other ways. It's based on a perverted pseudo-science, and on manipulation. There is nothing natural about it.

A driver's license is proof, one hopes, that the possessor knows how to physically operate a motor vehicle and has passed a very simple written test on driving regulations. It is not, and should never be, proof of citizenship or the legal right to be in the US. There are other documents for that. If supporting granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants is a bad thing, than one assumes that the opponents of this proposal are ok with them being out on the road unlicensed? Having been rear-ended a couple of years ago by a lady who had no license, no vehicle registration, no proof of insurance and who no habla ingles, somehow I think that is a bad idea.

I went there but I couldn't enter. Before you can enter the sire you have to give them an e-mail address and your zip code. I didn't enter. My first thoughts were, "This is somebody not to trust."

A very interesting site, and there is no requirement to enter either an e-mail address or a zip code. One is invited to do so, but need not to view the site's content.

· Wants to make the minimum wage a 'living wage'.
· Voted with Democratic Party 96 percent of 251 votes.
· Is a big believer in the separation of church and state.

Ummmm....clearly a dangerous character. And I'm stunned that he so often sides with the Democrats! I bet he might be one himself...wouldn't surprise me one bit.

W-O

BTW there was a minor Canadian political scandal a few months ago tied to Obama. It was leaked to the press that "his people" contacted certain Canadian officials to assure them, quietly, that if he was talking tough about Canada, it was just talk.

The leak was, if you heard about it, supposed to damage Obama's credibility. With the people who might vote for him. (A significant number of whom also hold Canadian citizenship, if they could only figure out the rules for expatriate Americans voting).

Funnily enough, the leak was traced to our Conservative Prime Ministers chief of staff, one Ian Brody, who has suddenly resigned, feeling that age-old urge to see his family more often.

This isn't really a smear since it appears to be settled as an even split...minus one for Obama, minus one for Harper.

W-O

The site I went to didn't let me access anything unless I gave up that information. Maybe I went to the wrong place. I'll double check.
