Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Apr 11 - 12:01 PM So.....What the Doc is waiting on is an "Immuno" stain from histology to the pathologists. Specifically its a type of Immunoperoxidase which colors the cells to illuminate cell types. When they were in surgery they did a "Sentinel Node Biopsy" on which they performed a "frozen section." This fast freezes a tissue sample which is cut on a cryostatically enclosed microtome and then fast processed to get a timely read during surgery to let the surgeons know whether the margins or in this case the lymph nodes are clear. If they were as you said then to be absolutely sure they do the Immuno. In Karen's lab the slides would be path ready today but other labs are slower and in either case you have to wait on the pathologist to read the slides. Now I know you don't really give two shits about any of that but after 25 years married to a Histologist you learn a lot of basically useless crap. Occasionally though it can be a show stopper.........One time Karen and I were having a party and most everyone there was a teacher at the school where I taught or their spouse. Naturally most of the talk was of things happening at school and someone had brought up something odd that had happened. Karen, forgetting the audience she had, injected the following into the conversation: "We had a 4 pound uterus today." The silence was deafening followed by gales of laughter and a one-upsmanship game of uterus jokes. I always found that high school teachers are about as bawdy a group as you can find when they're away from the freakin' kids. Well that's a lot of time wasting post but what the hell............. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: LilyFestre Date: 01 Apr 11 - 01:00 PM Hey Spaw.... That was an interesting post to read. I wondered how that stuff worked. I got the short version....we took samples, they are frozen, sliced and looked at under a microscope....should know the staging in 2 weeks or so. I even have photos of my slides but have no idea what I'm looking at. Michelle PS. Hey Dan!!! :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: olddude Date: 01 Apr 11 - 02:04 PM You will like this story. When we first went in they inserted wires into Linda's breast to show the doc what needs removed. When they took her out to the surgery waiting room she handed me her bra and said do something with this i forgot to put it in the locker. Ok, so I stuffed it in my coat pocket. Welllll after 4 hours in surgery I started to lose it. This lovely elderly black lady who was waiting for her husband patted me on the shoulder and said it will all be fine. I was crying and needed to blow my nose. I reached into my pocket to get my tissue ... YUP without thinking pulled out Linda's bra and didn't notice. The lady said .. "Oh honey, I don't think your wife would like her bra being used as a nose rag" and gave me some tissue. I started laughing and so did she. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: olddude Date: 01 Apr 11 - 02:16 PM I will be really glad if they don't have to do the big chemo stuff. Sounds like they won't just that taxofin whatever stuff and the radiation. They took most of the breast. Not sure why they didn't do all but they know what they are doing. Spring her home today. She looks good and sounds good. The hospital is about 2 hours from my home. I was alone ... Thank you for being there with me while I was going nuts. |

So much love zoomed your way last night. You've given so much out to others, so now, it's *your* time. x You take care of yourself too in all of this. That's amazing that Linda's going home today. What a relief for you both. Lizzie :0) xxx |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: olddude Date: 01 Apr 11 - 04:29 PM Got snow yesterday Jacqui, today it is sunny but cold, she is home and resting. She skyped the kids and the grand baby. Feels good just tired and a little sore but no real pain except if she tries to use that right arm that they did the lymph node stuff on .. Lots of vomiting last night, they pumped her full of dye stuff that upsets your stomach really bad ... eating good today and taking it slow and easy |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 01 Apr 11 - 09:53 PM very good news & great stories! when I left hospital after my cancer op (cancer left at the hospital!) my report said 'margins clear' - which I thought meant that the sides of the great wad of me (pound of flesh?) they removed was clear of cancer cells. I found out later what margins were. I didn't need any follow up treatment apart from 3-monthly appointments as my type of cancer could come back in the first 2 years. It's been 2 years since it was removed & my next appointment is in 6 months then 12 month. I'll miss my regular visits to my lovely surgeon & his receptionist. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Apr 11 - 02:52 PM Hey Dan, here's a laff-- remember that last Tuffbook question I asked you in a PM? If you forgot, no worries-- Hey: It turns out that the NUM LOCK key works just fine, and only needs one soft press to make ALL the keys work jes' fine! (Yep. Found that out AFTER I used an indelible marker to cross out the "broken" keys so I could devise a new password out of working keys.... so I wrote their names back on again.) :~) ~Silly Geezerette-who-almost-pitched-a-TUFFbook?!?!?!?!? |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: Little Robyn Date: 04 Apr 11 - 05:45 PM Nope, keep her active. Active is good! If she starts just hanging around, staying in bed, sitting in front of the telly, she'll start losing it. That's what I did after the second op and it was much harder to come back. The wound will stop her from over-doing things at first but she'll need to start stretching exercises if she gets cording - down the arm or down the ribs. (Voice of experience here!) So, as long as she's coping, let her go ahead. Lots of good wishes to you both. Robyn |
