My brother is recuperating from that surgery as we speak. They were hoping they would be able to do a laproscopic surgery but his gall bladder was too fragile so they had to do the larger one. He was a little miffed- he was expecting about a 5-day recouping period but he's doing fine and glad he had it done.

His main complaint, the first day he was home, was that the TV remote's batteries were shot so he couldn't change channels without getting up. :)

Pain relief. When Jacqui my late wife had hers out she got quite tetchy (and if you knew Jacqui you would know this is somewhat akin to describing a nuclear explosion as a "rather loud bang") with the doctors and nurses who would not give her more than she was allowed, and indeed with me when I did not succeed in bullying them into providing it.

So if you have a secret stock of heavy duties, make sure a friend you can trust has them and keeps them to hand where the professionals can't stop you getting at them.

If it's anything like the aftermath of a Caesarian...DON'T laugh!! My brother, who is a funny guy as anyone will tell you, visited me the day after my op and I nearly choked trying not to laugh. It was the only thing, really, that hurt. Clasping a pillow over your middle helps.

Good luck with it, Zany Mouse. Just take it easy for a while after, cos the poor ole digestive system takes a while to adjust.

Hope you are having the keyhole operation. Unfortunately, when I had mine done quite some time ago, it was just before the invention of keyhole surgery, and the recovery was slower.

For those who don't realise, HDU is High Dependency Unit - not quite as serious as Intensive Care but needing a bit more TLC than an ordinary ward.

The latest news is she'll probably come out of hospital tomorrow (Thursday). There was a minor setback with low haemoglobin, but she had 3 units of blood 2 days ago and that seems to be OK now. They've mainly been waiting to get her Warfarin results back to normal and that appears to be there now, but they want another blood test tomorrow to see that it hasn't gone too far in the other direction (blood too thin). The actual operation and recovery from that seems to have very well - she'll have her staples out next week all being well.

I dare say she'll put up a post when she's out.

I'm out!!!!!!!

My ball and chain were unlocked yesterday afternoon and I'm back at home now. I recovered from the op much better than anyone expected (although I was miffed to be kept in for 10 days). I was expected to be on the HDU for 4 days but only needed 24 hours, and I don't remember much about those, although I do remember it was kept very dimmed and relaxing.

My time on the main ward went more or less according to plan, apart from the usual blood problems. My bed was one of those triple-doubled jointed electric things. VERY comfy. I'm threatening to dump Mick and marry that bed instead.

SJ: My belly must be almost as large as I had 21 staples in all. They came out yesterday so no need to have the wound seen to until the post-op appointment in a few weeks time.

The only bad thing left over is a slight nausea at the smell/sight of most food (even Mick's), but I hope that will pass soon.

Many thanks to all Catters for the love and positive energy sent to me. Mick told me about new postings each day and it was a great lift to the spirits to know that folky-folk were doing their thing to bring me home. Thanks.

Watch out for all the spring colds that are going round.. a gloriously coughy one has landed in our house this weekend! A cushion clamped over the stomach when you feel the need to cough or sneeze, helps.

21 staples is pretty good going.. I only had 12 when I had Limpit by C section... and she was a big baby, born arse first!

Take care now, drink lots and plenty of fresh air. Get the sun on it if you can bear it and cocoa butter will help if it starts to feel tight and dry.

Yesterday I received a 'Mudcat hug' in the shape of a beautiful shawl from Jacqui. Beautiful blues (my fav colour). I'm completing on my cottage in Normandy next week so I think this will live over there to keep myself (and anyone visiting of course) snug and warm in what could be a cold stone cottage.
