Where will you be this memorial day weekend? We'll be in Lake Como, PA (just a few minutes from Hancock, NY) for the Folk Music Society of New York's 2007 Spring Weekend. The dates are Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28. Weekend staff includes Jen Larson & Terry McGill, Debra Cowan, Bob Malenky, and John Krumm, and others. There will be concerts, workshops, dancing, jamming, and singing, as well as a camper concert which gives everyone a chance to perform. If you can tear yourself away from the music, there are also a pool and jacuzzi, exercise room, ping pong table, and tennis courts -- these are also good for a non-musical partners, spouses, friends, etc.

I'll be at the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center grounds, where the Space Needle still stands, in downtown Seattle, WA. The dates are Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28. There will also be concerts, workshops, dancing, jamming, and singing here but no camping as this is an inner city event.

There is no pool or jacuzzi on the grounds but it does feature a rather large and unusual fountain that many love to explore when the weather is warm as well as a wading pool for those who need a milder form of water exploration. No exercise rooms, ping pong tables, and tennis courts but just walking around the grounds will provide you with all of the cardio workout you'll need for the week. There are also plenty of good activities for non-musical partners, spouses, friends, kids etc. with the Eperience Music Project, SciFi museum, the Pacific Science Center, food booths and children's amusement park nearby.

I'll be performing there. Look for my performance on Saturday at 12:15pm at the Cafe Impromptu stage in the lobby of the newest venue on the grounds McCaw Hall. There's plenty of comfortable seating at this impressive indoor venue. I'll be bottleneck sliding my new & used blues on my homemade found object junk art Nobro resophonic guitar and other garage sale finds for your listening pleasure.

I'll be bending my saw blade too, demonstrating the eerie tones and subtle timbre of the unruly blade's capabilities and my uncanny ability to flex the hand tool's razor sharp spring steel betwixt two quivering knees to produce a prodigious pallet of pleasing panache. Yes, I'll risk life and limb by bending 213 terribly treacherous teeth dangerously close to body parts both near and dear while proudly providing a vicarious daredevil vaudevillian entertainment experience! (Those weak of spirit please bring smelling salts. Aid crews will be standing by at alert for the faint of heart!)

I will also be hosting my 5th Annual How To Play Music With A Hand Saw Workshop. With nearly 100 folks attending last year's free workshop it turn into a standing room only event. You may want to come early to reserve seating for your chance to learn how to unlock the secrets of coaxing beautiful music from your hand tools. Boys, girls drop their jaws for guys who play saws. Girls, all the boys go gaw gaw for girl playing saw! Saw ya there!

Interested? Go to http://www.nwfolklife.org/ there are lots of links to many the aspects and details of this 'free' event.

Everything Reggie said about Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center is true (I think. Did he say anything about the multi-thousands of visitors mulling about the central area, or the fantastic drumming heard for miles away - perhaps not, better not mention it). Anyway, it can be nice if you stay away from the crowds and drumming. And there's a nice little free (sign-up) stage in the Alki Room (where the CD sales are) - always some surprising impromptu performers there. I usually hang around the Northwest Stage for the maritime and Celtic music, and the little Alki Stage outside the Alki Room. Oh yes, don't miss Reggie, he puts on a good show!

I'll be doing a workshop with my friend Paddy Graber, an Irish traditional singer and story teller from Vancouver, B.C.
IRISH SLOW AIRS IN SONGS
A Workshop for
Northwest Folklife 2007
Monday, May 28,   3:00 - 3:50 pm
SCT Room West*    Seattle Center
Stewart Hendrickson & Paddy Graber
Slow airs are considered some of the most beautiful types of Irish music. Many came as tunes from sean-nós (old style) songs or even ballads, and slow airs have been used as tunes for many other songs. This workshop will explore these relationships, with examples of both. Stewart will play some airs on the fiddle, and he and Paddy will sing some related songs. We will discuss the tunes and songs, and sing some of the songs together. Links to all of the songs and tunes are available on the internet here
*The West Rehearsal Hall is on the south side of the Seattle Children's Theater. Enter through the SE doors.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Wow, Joy! Thanks for the 'heads up'. I'll be within an hour of Hancock on Saturday, and after a 1pm performance in Roxbury NY (Delaware Co), I'm free until the following day, when I have another show in the same area (East Meredith NY). I may just make it down there to Lake Como.

Believe it or not, I actually have some songs from that whole area around Lake Como (Wayne County PA was traditional singer Ezra "Fuzzy" Barhight's birthplace) & the Delaware River rafting & logging days too!

Hey Stewart looks like we're sharing the same room for our workshops.

There really is more entertainment at this event than is humanly possible to take in and that's just the scheduled stuff. Then there are the many impromptu performances as Stewart was mentioning. Each year the Alki Room has been set aside for folks who wish to purchase performer's recordings. There are tables full of cds.

There's a nice little acoustic stage there as well. Any perfomer who is being featured at the festival can schedule an impromptu performance on that stage by speaking to the folks in charge of sales there. You end up singing to those who are wandering through the room seeking to purchase recordings as well as anyone who happens by and wanders in to enjoy your show. I played two shows there last year and sold most of cds via those shows.

Oops! I was having so much fun describing my workshop that I forgot to mention my musical saw workshop's time schedule.

Saw ya later, Reg

I spend every memorial day and labor day weekend with 5,000 of my
closest friends at Strawberry Music Festival near Yosemite National Park. the tickets for it have long ago sold out for both the memorial day and the labor day events.

we call these the spring festival and the fall festival.
memorial day is the official opening of the summer season,
and labor day is at the close of summer.

there are numerous stages, workshops, a lake, an on-site
radio station, a band scramble, a morning variety show at
the breakfast cafeteria, and evening night club, hikes,
horse back rides, yoga classes and more.

camping under the tall trees is part of the tradition and
so is jamming. Often after the main stage closes down just
before midnight, the camps come alive with music and many
campers stroll from camp to camp listening or joining the jams.

I'll be going to GottaGetGone for the first time as well.
Various Albany (New York) area friends have been telling
me about it for years. Now with Jeff and Barbara being there,
I'm making the leap. Sounds like a good party.

Sorry to miss the NY Folkmusic gathering.
Dave, have a great time!
Joy, it was good to see you and Chris Saturday night.

Burl, Memorial Day weekend was originally called "Decoration Day"
a time to remember those who "died in our nation's service"
you can read more here: http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html
Apparently it dates back to the American Civil War/War Between the States (also known in the South as the War of Northern Aggression)

So why do Americans spend the holiday grilling meat, hanging out in the sun, and (for folkies) making music? Possibly because
we can't stand remembering our own history or thinking about
unpleasant things. Not completely true, but mostly.
