Subject: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Jul 07 - 04:10 PM OK, don't have a cow, man, but somehow, I don't think Vermont is the right place for Springfield... or the right Springfield for the Simpsons... how 'bout you? |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: curmudgeon Date: 10 Jul 07 - 05:29 PM Thay can still be Yankees in Springfield MA. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: Becca72 Date: 10 Jul 07 - 05:53 PM Definitely NOT Springfield, VT. I'd buy MA, though. |

Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Jul 07 - 06:16 PM Dunno... but Grandpa Simpson'll be "deep in the cold, cold ground" afore he recognises "the State of Missoura!" LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: RangerSteve Date: 10 Jul 07 - 10:45 PM In one episode, Homer's driver's license showed the state abbreviation as "NT". It's safe to say that Springfield isn't in any state that we know of. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: SharonA Date: 11 Jul 07 - 12:45 AM RangerSteve, I didn't see that episode, but could the license have said "NJ"? There are two Springfields in New Jersey (in Union County and Burlington County). There's one Simpsons episode from years ago, in which someone asked the family where Springfield is. Lisa replied slyly that if one paid attention to the clues, one could figure it out (that's a paraphrase). I don't know whether those clues were supposed to have been contained in that one episode or scattered throughout previous episodes... or whether Lisa's statement was just bogus. |

Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: John O'L Date: 11 Jul 07 - 03:00 AM Here is all you need to know to find the real Springfield. "I am so smart, I am so smart, s-m-r-t..." |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 11 Jul 07 - 05:51 AM Well,'NT' could be the Canadian territory of Nunavut? Or perhaps not........! |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: SharonA Date: 11 Jul 07 - 11:22 AM Wow, Terry, I thought you were kidding about Nunavut (as in "We'll have none of it!"), but then I googled it -- and it really is a relatively new Canadian territory! Whaddayaknow... (heh, that'll be the next one they make -- Whaddayaknow Territory) The capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit. I guess that the committee sat around and asked each other, "Well, what do you want to call the new capital?" and somebody started to say, "I call it...." and then the rest said, "Sounds good; let's go with that." No wonder the ballots were sealed when they voted on the new capital. Think I'm kidding about a committee? Look here! Could be worse. The other choice for capital was Rankin Inlet... and "rank" can mean having an offensively strong odor... The whole thing sounds a bit Simpsonic to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: SharonA Date: 11 Jul 07 - 12:07 PM There's a better page about the selection of Iqaluit as Nunavut's capital than the one I linked. Try here: Article from the Iqaluit for Capital Committee (Read the whole report on this page, too -- I found it fascinating. It's kind of like the select-a-Springfield-for-movie-premiere campaign, but on a frighteningly official governmental level!) |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 11 Jul 07 - 12:15 PM After I posted it, Sharon, I began to wish I hadn't in case someone took it seriously! Nunavut means 'Our Land' and is the eastern half (approx) of the original North West Territories. It's the antithesis of Springfield and that amused me. Mind you, that's not hard! |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: robomatic Date: 11 Jul 07 - 05:20 PM Well, it couldn't be MA because there's an episode where Homer says "Go back to Massachusetts, COMMIE!" which does kind of reflect a bit on Vermont, since Burlington at one time had a Socialist mayor. On some episodes, people in the countryside around Simpsons' Springfield have had sorta 'down east' accents, although Cletus doesn't. The nearest nuclear reactor is Maine Yankee. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: Becca72 Date: 11 Jul 07 - 05:28 PM Robomatic, If it is Springfield, VT the writers of the show have obviously never actually been there..Maine Yankee has been out of commission since before the show started, or pretty near. The mayor on the Simpsons is very obviously a Kennedy parody and it would be just like Homer to tell people to "go back to Massachusetts" even if that's where they already were.... |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: RangerSteve Date: 12 Jul 07 - 12:47 PM SharonA - it was definately "NT". It's even noted in one of the Simpsons books, I think there are 3 volumes out now, with each episode detailed. NJ is out, since neither Springfield is on the ocean. Wherever it is, it has to be on the ocean, with a mountain range close by, and near a desert. It has to be within driving distance of Las Vegas and Oregon (the episode where Homer gives up a trip to Vegas so he can drive Bart to a survival camp in OR). And since Matt Groening is from the west coast (Washington, I believe), Springfield is at least in a western state. I also read somewhere that the creators had made the decision never to put Springfield in a real state. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: Mrrzy Date: 12 Jul 07 - 03:43 PM Right, it was carefully NOT in any real state for the longest time. But VT is just wrong. |
Subject: RE: BS: So now the Simpsons are Yankees? From: M.Ted Date: 12 Jul 07 - 10:10 PM Springfield is near to Shelbyville--the only Springfield with a Shelbyville close at hand is in Illinois-- |
