Subject: BS: Quarter peal - happy campinologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 08 Oct 07 - 06:19 AM For those who bell ring I've just managed this weekend to get my first EVER quarter peal, ringing the Treble Bell for Grandsire doubles (I think it was)... BTW - Quarter peal equals ringing a 'tune' for 45 minutes non stop... I'm chuffed! DOn't think I could ever manage a peal though (3 hours ringing - gulp!). EWIS |

Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campinologist From: GUEST,LTS Pretending to work Date: 08 Oct 07 - 07:02 AM Congratulations!!! I rang a few Quarterpeals in my ringing days, my first one taking 53 mins, Bob Doubles, 16cwt tenor bell, I was on treble. The full Peal is something else though, you don't have to do it all, you can get a break if you feel confident enough to retake the rope partway through a change, but the feeling once you've done it is incredible! A Peal is about 5040 changes, a quarter peal is 1250. Change Ringing is explained here. Well Done Sooz, no mean feat in these days of recorded bells and noise abatement laws! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 08 Oct 07 - 07:50 AM Thanks Liz, We're fairly lucky in that the residents in the main are all church goers in the small village and the others don't complain. But I've rung in some churches where we have to lock ourselves in to ring. And others where people shout up to us to stop because they are having a BBQ. I say, they have to expect it if they want to live next to a church with bells. I think it's a lovely sound done properly. We have heard the recorded bells too - it's a shame. We're finding a few new younger ringers to keep the tradition going though. My significant other has rung full peals and tells me it's quite something. I'm ok with the rope changing thingy so I might give it a go. Cheers ewis x |

Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: SussexCarole Date: 08 Oct 07 - 08:02 AM Congratulations - that's brilliant news! It's a memory that won't fade. I rang my first quarter in 1964 and will never forget the feeling of achievment when the bells came round. Perhaps a Mudcat quarter sometime? I know we have kicked the idea around before....... |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Oct 07 - 08:25 AM Two words Carole, one of them is 'off'. My frozen shoulder won't let me do it now anyway. Although I know where we can lay hold of some hand bells. . . LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 08 Oct 07 - 09:15 AM ah haaaaa, the mystic art of hand bells... I find that soooo hard, getting my brain to think in two bells terminology! |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 08 Oct 07 - 09:18 AM by the way - thank you to the person who changed it from an i to an a... but I was rather happy with the i and it didn't really bug i! :-) Thanks anyway |

Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 09 Oct 07 - 03:31 AM hahahahaahha very witty cheers Barry - put it in the BS as some people it's not really folk I suppose that's why I put it here - though they are musical and tuned to a scale. I got in to it when I met my hubby, and have not stopped since. I like the socialising after practice too... hmmmmm real ale! Plus the fact they are a lively bunch of people. Regards EWIS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Phot Date: 09 Oct 07 - 07:41 AM I haven't rung for years now, the last quarter I rang was at Bradford-on-Tone, Somerset, which is reputed to have the finest tone Tennor in Somerset. Wassail!! Chris. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: GUEST,Long Lankin Date: 09 Oct 07 - 09:49 AM Congratulations - My daughter rang her first quarter peal last year and my wife is psyching herself up to do one. I always though that for church bells it was simply "bell ringing" and that "campanology" referred to handbells. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Oct 07 - 11:31 AM Actually, if you want to get pedantic, campanology is the study of and art of casting bells - it's got an ology so it's a study. A campanologist is one who studies it. Otherwise, you're a bellringer - and even then, not a true bellringer until you've broken your third stay! Today's useless information: The bell foundry at Loughborough uses horse poo from the nearby royal stables to make the casts. Horse poo gives a smoother finish and better adhesion to the clay moulds. But no matter what it's called, it's a bloody good hobby, and a fine achievement. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: vectis Date: 09 Oct 07 - 08:34 PM Many congrats Sooz that is no mean feat. I used to ring in my yoof but am now too old and idle. You can always find a ring of three for your first peal, it will be a lot quicker. You can then work up to six bells for the full 5040 peal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 10 Oct 07 - 02:41 AM Vectis, what a great idea... I think though, that even though most of the bell ringers would have me sectioned for mentioning it... Liz... I've done me first stay a while back, and don't intend doing many more as the poor ringing master has to hang on to it while we've rested between practices :-) They are a fab bunch of people, all very individual, which is why I love going |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Oct 07 - 10:21 AM I've rung a ring of 3... it gets tedious listening to it after 5 minutes. Any longer and you start to go doolally. Try it on a ring of 12 - that's fun! I started ringing because I was thrown out of the Girl Guides - I said Guides was boring and the leader suggested I go and find something more interesting. I found the ringers in the pub and joined them. Our Captain was a cantankerous old goat who would often ring his bell with the rope at an angle of 45degrees. More than once I saw him snag the lid of the font (ground floor ringing chamber, font in the middle of the circle). His deputy was an inveterate 'tower grabber' and being a builder, got asked to check out towers all over the south west. He'd pick an evening, grab a few other ringers and we'd ring for 45 minutes with tell tales on the walls to check for movement and chalk marks on the bell cage to check if it shifted! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: brid widder Date: 10 Oct 07 - 06:36 PM Well done Ella...I know there are a few of us on here... maybe we should try for a mudcat quarter... one day... |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: GUEST,One who knows Liz the squeak Date: 11 Oct 07 - 02:42 AM Any longer and you start to go doolally. THAT explains a lot about you girl! See you in a couple of weeks. RP |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: SussexCarole Date: 11 Oct 07 - 05:10 PM It was the Girl Guides that started me ringing as well Liz. I wanted more proficiency badges so looked through the book & saw the bellringer's badge...visited the village tower captain..learned to ring and the rest is history in many County peal books! The girl guides seemed rather boring after that so I left! |
Subject: RE: BS: Quarter peal - happy campanologist From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 12 Oct 07 - 04:17 AM The appeal for me of bellringers over the Girl Guides, was that the Guides never went to the pub after meeting. LTS |
