Subject: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST,clockwatcher Date: 03 Jan 08 - 08:06 AM Anybody see it? Hidden away at 9 a.m. on Channel 5 on New Years Day was a 3-hour programme about the great RVW. Especially the first hour or so was particularly relevant here, what with the folksong collecting and English Hymnal stuff. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 03 Jan 08 - 08:13 AM Can't get 5. If it's broadcast on any of the other channels, someone PLEASE post a heads-up. |

Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: HipflaskAndy Date: 03 Jan 08 - 09:12 AM I caught a bit of it - most interesting overall - and included short clips of Carthy's Liza & Martin (individually) and brief words from Tony Benn and m' local rascal Karl Dallas! - worth watching if it reappears. - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST, Sminky Date: 03 Jan 08 - 09:24 AM A superb bio of the great man - I found it very moving. Contributions from Martin and Elza Carthy too. I hope there's a repeat. |

Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: r.padgett Date: 03 Jan 08 - 09:54 AM Yes saw some of this, very interesting! Has mention of Holst, Elgar and Maude Karpeles and Ursula Vaughan Williams input Wealthy upbringing and song collecting and influences becoming totally absorbed into his own compositions Hope it is repeated and available on DVD as mentioned Ray |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 03 Jan 08 - 10:53 AM I actually crawled out of bed at 0845 GMT on New Year's Day to watch this! Good stuff. In addition to the folkies mentioned, Richard Thompson was interviewed. He remembered his time as an apprentice stained glass maker, when classical music was always on in the workshop, but usually Wagner and other German gents. Richard asked for some RVW, and was thereafter regarded as a bit of a lightweight. If yer wants the DVD, see http://www.tonypalmerdvd.com/ |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 03 Jan 08 - 11:31 AM I completely forgot this was on ...grrrr!!! I wanted to watch it to see if any mention was made of Lucy Broadwood, who he acknowledged to have introduced him to folksong as a young man, and with whom he maintained a friendship and a working relationship throughout her life, but I understand from a friend who watched it that there was no mention of her at all ... a rather sad omission IMHO. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST Date: 03 Jan 08 - 11:33 AM any mention of George Butterworth....? |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 03 Jan 08 - 11:48 AM Yes, George Butterworth was mentioned - only in passing though as one of the majority of RVW's contemporaries who were killed in WW1. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: katlaughing Date: 03 Jan 08 - 11:51 AM I have just asked neflix to add this to their catalogue as I would love to see it. My brother, a composer, has always raved about RVW and I know would be fascinated to see this, too. Thanks for letting us know about it. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 03 Jan 08 - 12:41 PM The film also included Malcolm Taylor, librarian of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, filmed in the library, demonstrating a phonograph and being interviewed. The final film footage of Ursula were also filmed in the Library last July - shortly before she died. The film is indeed out on DVD. I was lucky enough to see the film at its premiere in December at the Barbican - much more impressive on the big screen! And the DVD was available afterwards. Copies of the DVD are available for purchase from the VWML. Email library@efdss.org for details. Derek Schofield |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 03 Jan 08 - 01:28 PM Does that mean - as I hope it does - that the Library will make a bit of a profit if we buy it from them rather than from the commercial website? Quick thread-drifty question: Did Malcolm Taylor work in the library c.1972, then leave, then come back again? When I worked in C#H Barbara Newlyn was librarian, followed by a lady named Jo; and Malcolm started/returned after I was gone. Same man? |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: The Borchester Echo Date: 03 Jan 08 - 01:59 PM My recollection is that Malcolm started as Assistant Librarian to replace Clive Woolf after he became ill in the mid 70s. A Librarian (whose name I can't remember) also started at about the same time to replace Dave Bland who had gone to work for Bill Leader. This chap lasted no time at all, scared off by how much work there was to do, and Malcolm achieved a rapid promotion. There again, it was all so long ago and I might not remember them in the right order. Re: RVW He listened with great discomfort to a US music student while visiting a conservatoire through half an hour of dissonance then told him: If ever you hear any music, be sure to write it down. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK) From: katlaughing Date: 03 Jan 08 - 02:37 PM Ah, my brother will love that quote, Diane! He always fought with his professors who told him his compositions were too tonal. |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK Channel 5) From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Jan 08 - 02:49 PM I'd sure like to see this. Amazon has a number of Tony Palmer films available on DVD in the U.S., but not this one. Maybe it will come out soon - looks like it came out in the UK December 5. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK Channel 5) From: The Borchester Echo Date: 03 Jan 08 - 03:02 PM As Derek Schofield just said above, you can buy the DVD direct from VWML. |

Subject: RE: Ralph Vaughan Williams (UK Channel 5) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 04 Jan 08 - 11:11 AM Positively the LAST time and then I will go away, I promise. But I have to. It's a boo-boo alert. UK's international dialling code is simply 44. The two zeroes are for when you're ringing from other parts of Europe (like Ireland). Sorry *blush* |
