To remember the names of the eight bones in the wrist:

Starting from the thumb, the eight carpal bones are Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, and Hamate.

Ah, Kat, I'd thought to avoid the acronyms but they're a fruitful bunch that include several with awkward and unnecessary repetitions; eg
PIN number for Personal Identification Number
and
HIV virus for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Back issues of New Scientist give lots of these and there's even a nomenclature for them. Which I also forget.

There is also a large class of mnemonics based on the numbers of letters in successive words. For example, pi is "How I need a drink, alcoholic of course, after the heavy lectures concerning quantum mechanics", and e is "To destroy a building, we detonate a quantity of hydrogen bombs". My home telephone number, oh, 40 years ago, used to be "Fineman's retreat, situated on a tiny estuary". At work it was "Generally an avid editor is fucked up".

The letters stand for Olfactory, Optic, Occulomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducent, Facial, Auditory, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Spinal Accessory, and Hypoglossal.

Since the Auditory nerve is also called the Vestibulocochlear nerve and the Accessory nerve is also called the Spinal accessory nerve, some remember:

Almost every English-speaking continent I've encountered has ROY G BIV, which is the same as yours but in order of decreasing (rather than increasing) wavelength in the humanly visible part of the spectrum and has the advantage of resembling, memorably, a person's name.
