I am perfectly aware of what a rider, and a contract is...and politics...? No matter to me what a band's politics are, I'm there for the music, BUT...it doesn't change my opinion that "there are more bands and singers who need to be put in their places like this."

It's called a rider. All bands have it in their contract. Don't be so naive and try and make it out to be a political gesture. It's not. It's part of the gig. Some bands ask for clean socks. You can easily find bands riders' on t'web, just look. The most famous is for m&m's with the brown ones taken out (I think it was to check if people actually read the contracts).
Chumbas are good, solid, fun loving, very intelligent, caring people. Don't make out they're not.

I guess it's always part of the democratic process to chuck water or eggs or something of politicians. I am not really sure in what way or how it contributes to change.

The real point is that Chumbawamba contribute through their music, and most welcome it is too.

That's as maybe Albert.
All I know is I speak from direct experience of what they asked for and were provided with at a gig last year. And I am aware that they have asked for the same from a socialist organisation for a gig later this year. Needless to say they were told not to be so stupid!!

My impression of the band in Swansea was totally the opposite of your staement.
The band were very down to earth and as for wine when I tried to order a glass from the bar for my companion I was told no wine was stocked or served in the club.
No the band were very down to earth and the music they played was wonderful!!

What sticks in my craw about the band is that, despite charging a hefty fee, they also expect to be provided with bottles of vodka, white and red wine, port and lager to share with their guest list and take away at the end of the gig.
That's not what I would expect from a band with socialist credentials. I know nothing is too good for the working classes but this is a step too far for me.

I think it's a bit sad that there's all this focus on one thing one ex-member of the band did 10 years ago. Their 25-odd year backstory is worth a bit more than that, fer chrissake!

Sorry I can't feel any delayed sympathy for John Prescott who had some water thrown over him at some music award ceremony.
A few years after the water incident he was busy helping to lead this country into a war where cruise missiles and cluster bombs were being poured onto Iraqi civilians in copious quantities and the dead are still being counted.

Agreed Diane - so please Joe, let's at least first get the band's name spelt right in the thread title.

And The Boy Bands Have Won is indeed ace - all four of 'em in fact! - there's a review posted on www.netrhythms.co.uk/reviews.html that I found yesterday that you might like to check out.

Go to the band's website www.chumba.com for all the gen, and you'll see that Nigel Spencer is spot-on in his assessment.

These guys have deep Integrity as well as Exceeding Good Sense and real canny musicianship, a combination of qualities that's less prevalent in the folk scene than it ought to be.
More power to 'em I say.

They're part of No Masters and they've sung with Coope Boyes and Simpson (they're on 'Voices at the Door') and had them guest on one of their albums.

Actually, I reckon they'd be perverse enough to lift Eric's description and use it as a strap line on their website...

Oh Eric, how deeply wrong you are. Try this instead "Anarchist punk collective who had a huge live following and a number of respectably selling albums under their belt prior to their one fluke worldwide hit (most of the proceeds of which they gave away to causes they supported). Even on their first album the folk influence was there. One of their early albums - long before the hit - was the very folky English Rebel Songs."

Their latest CD, The Boybands Have Won, is really ace.

And two of them can be heard on Jo Freya's Lal Waterson project, which was really lovely when I saw it live at Cheltenham a few weeks ago. They are, i believe, members of the No Masters Collective, and since becoming Acoustic Chumbawamba have done some really good music, I think.

I saw Chumbawumba perform at a small club in Swansea this evening and they were superb!
They are singing songs from right out of the English rebel tadition plus songs they have written which would fit into any folk club like a glove.
Glorious four and five part harmonies and great songs...mmm ...saw them in Sidmouth 18 months ago and they are still brilliant!
