If the question was actually addressed to you, then the "if" clause is true, so the answer to the main (interrogative) clause has to be "I" (or your friend's name, or some other synonym). If your friend was talking to himself and merely reporting the question to you, then the "if" clause is false, and any reply whatever to the question is valid: If I am not I, then I am the man in the moon, etc.

A very reasonable thing to say in a dream, since the "person" addressed would in fact be an aspect of the person dreaming. As would the person asking.

In my opinion, a person who asks 'Who am I?' needs to stop asking it and start doing things - making art, playing music, travelling, helping others, making friends, working with animals, reading books. (But not self-help books on finding one's self.)

Once the person has accumulated enough likes, dislikes, adventures and accomplishments, he will know who he is.

Step 1 would be to cease sending e-mails asking others to define him.

Nevertherless, does this help -

to which I reply,

why would anyone say, 'You are me' , then followed by the other saying 'I'm not you', and the first speaker then saying 'Who am I if you're not me?'

In other words, your original question implies that at some point the first speaker said to the first 'You are me', or 'You are me, aren't you?'
