For me it'll be main stage all Friday night.

Saturday will be main stage all afternoon followed by Tim Edey Nand, Katie Doherty, Andrew Dinan Band (if he's who I think he is) and Eddi Reader.

Sunday is the hardest day. Afternoon will be Chris & Mark then Ian Bruce then Alie & Steve then Jo's gig. Sunday evening will be second stage all evening I think.

Decisions, decisions. I always plan these things way ahead and they NEVER work out that way.

GTI, Yes, Ryedale Folk Weekend (23rd-26th May) is at the Folk Museum which is an absoulutely beautiful setting and very safe for Children as it is totally enclosed.

It is £25 for the weekend and you get:

GREYCAP - Just picked up on yout posting. When you say "too expensive", are you referring to the Pickering Festival? If you are, I find that incredible. If you were to go along to see either of Friday's or Saturday's headliners at a theatre you'd be paying around 20 - 25 quid alone. Are you suggesting that 40 quid for 38 other acts (of sheer quality) is a rip-off? That's without mentioning everthing else that's going on. You can (physically) watch 20 concerts over the course of the weekend if you wish. That works out at 3.25 per gig. Now, I suggest that's pretty good value! If you weren't referring to Pickering then I take it all back! :-)

I like folk music and £40 in this day and age is cheap. However my missus would argue that she could spend the £40 in a much better way :-)

It is very reasonable and there is a lot of quality there, I am astonished that someone had the balls to gatecrash Pickering on to the folk festival map, it is hardly "from little acorns etc". My most enjoyable session this year was at KFFC Winter Warmer W/E in the singaround, stuff of legends and maybe a reprise in November, well done Banji.

For one Pickering is a long way off the beaten track and well away from any concentrations of people, for two there are a lot of well established festivals in the vicinity, Saltburn being one and a limited amount of cash/audience to go around them all. And finally there does not appear to be a gradual building into viable event but a "go for the jugular" and book top artists. It shows that they have great faith in their marketing skills and the drawing capacity of their performers. I think it is a brave thing to do and I wish them well.

A Rock Fest Les? I don't see that at all. Friday's Rock offering is a total of one act out of eight, The Waterboys, and they're playing an acoustic gig. . Saturday has ummmmm none (assuming that Chris Difford doesn't get the rest of Squeeze to go along)! Sunday has ummmmm none! It looks to me like a very good folk festival that has, admittedly, gone for the jugular but where's the harm in that?

Why do we have to have strict demarcations on the type of artist? I wouldn't exactly call The Leveller, kd lang, Joan Armatrading or Martha Wainwright folk artists, but they're still appearing at Cambridge. You either like them or you don't.

Perhaps it should be called The Pickering Largely Folk With A Bit of Cross-Over Thrown In Festival.

I think that they're probably worried that 'their' folk music will be swallowed up by the obvious success of my kind of folk music. I read on here that apparently, Billy Bragg can't sing. Neither can 95% of singers that I've heard in singarounds up and down the country over the last 40 years (and when I say 95%, I'm being generous). The fact that 95% of them can't sing doesn't detract from the fact that their audience loves it. This is most peoples idea of folk music. It's (invariably) my idea of hell!

Confrontational and aggressive Les? I think you'll find it's simply telling it like it is and having a different opinion. I haven't 'rubbished' anything you've said. I simply differed. I'm afraid that life isn't all cosy and fluffy. There are many, many people on here that belong to the clique. Many of you seem to know each other, you (nearly) all have the same taste and opinions of exactly what folk music is. You have virtually no time for anything post-1975 and hate it when anybody comes along with their own interpretration of folk music, folk festivals and which direction THEY would like the whole folk scene to head in.

As for your choice of festivals;

Shepley - Yes
Saddleworth - No
Warwick - Yes
Fylde - Yes
Shrewsbury - Yes
Saltburn - No

My choices are;

Pickering, Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Rochester, Towersey. All of which I would go to at the drop of a hat.

Like I said we all have different tastes. But please don't go around pidgeon holing people & lumping them together. I have plenty of time for post 1975 music (why 1975?) & I don't care what other people listen to & I don't feel the folk scene should head in any particular direction, it will evolve & change, as is it's nature.

YEP, Input (whoever you are?!) I'm going! I'll be spending some of the season Morris dancing, some of the season singing in sessions, some of it watching local artists at tiny traditional village festivals and some of it taking in big concerts at a whole range of atmospheric venues (small to enormous)! Why do we always have to have this old chestnut of a debate? Most people are actually agreeing here deep down - there are individual artists and bands we may love and some we don't, it's not about whether they fit some mould or certain criteria or not! These constant trad vs commercial debates actually create the wrong impressions of supporters of both - traddies aren't as cliquey as they are portrayed and "main-stream" (for want of a much better word) concert goers are not as scathing about us finger-in-the-ear types as would be suggested.

Anyway, have a big hug and allow threads like these to stick to their point - giving useful and welcome information about more wonderful music events........ that's getting a bit too loving and groovy now, isn't it. See you at Pickering those that are going and see you on different threads about other festivals!

I am NOT involved with Pickering or any other festival other than wanting to attend. I felt the need to defend this festival and it's organisers for a several reasons.

1) I'm an ardent fan of most of the acts that are appearing at Pickering

2) I'm an ardent fan of this kind of 'greenfield' festival

3) I hate f*****g bullies, and that's exactly what you are! Why don't you give the organisers a break. I hope they sell out with this event and make lots and lots of fast bucks.

4) I have EVERY understanding of what a folk festival is. I've been to enough.

Managed to get me a job there for the three days and with a little luck have my choice of stages and earn money at the same time.

Update on Pickering Folk Festival - June 28th

Latest additions to the weekend's festivities include fabulous new singer/somgwriter Jon Lacey appearing on the second stage, first up on Saturday lunchtime. As was previously announced, Wendy arrowsmith will be appearing on Sunday lunchtime on the second stage. The line-up for both main stages in now complete. In addition, great festival favourites, reggae band T&LaTouche, will be performing at the LNE on Saturday night from 00.15 until 2am. We have added ceilidhs to the programme on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and they will be held in the Events Arena.

Please note one programme change - Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick will now be appearing last on the main stage on Sunday afternoon and not, as previously published, first on in the evening. Jo Freya's 'Lal Waterson Project' will now be first on in the evening.

We have been asked by several customers. who is Liam O'Maonlai and why is he headlining? ? Liam is the lead singer with The Hothouse Flowers and a great sean nos singer and multi-instrumentalist. That's why he's headlining the second stage on Saturday evening.

Ticket are currently selling extremely well and we would advise any potential customers to book sooner rather than later.

I don't know about pubs but I see from the website that you can buy £2 arena tickets that allow you access to everything on the Showground (so I assume sessions and singarounds)except the 2 main stages.

I think it's fairly obvious that, as the site is a mile from the town, has two beer tents and covers a vast expanse of land , that they probably won't be using the pubs in town for music. It's clearly a festival that is to be held on one site only. Much the way that Cambridge is. I for one don't want to go trapsing around Pickering looking for a session. I'm happy staying put in the temporary nation that is Pickering Folk Festival.

I've said that the festival is confined to the showground, yes, but there's nothing stopping people going into the town at any point to take a look around. After all, Pickering is a lovely place. I think it's great that the organisers are laying on a bus to take people from the site to the town. I live near Pickering so it doesn't interest me. I hope they do get thousands of people. They deserve to with the line-up they've produced.

Nutty, the point of putting on transport is that parking in Pickering is a nightmare, so it makes sense to avoid further congestion and still give people a chance to walk around town, which has some fantastic foods shops and other attractions. We will be bringing our bikes so that if we want to go into town we can do so under our own steam. Personally, with a young daughter, I don't want to go to singarounds in town pubs - I much prefer it being all on the one site. If all else fails, our caravan awning has seen many a good singaround - often late into the night (bring your own booze!).

TBSOMF, I love that phrase 'temporary nation' - puts me in mind of Woodstock (oh dear, showing my age now).

Come on, nutty, give it a chance - let's see how it works out. If it's as good as it promises to be, it'll replace Cambridge for me from now on.

You've kind of lost me there? The guest clearly says buses will be provided, you seem to cast some doubt on this..... have you heard something that the rest of us don't know?

Not that I can see us leaving the showground, greenfield Festivals are so much easier with children than festivals with multiple locations scattered around a town (though we do still go to these). They actually feel like a holiday!

Nutty, at no point did I suggest that they won't be running the buses. Where did you get that from? I'm simply going by the literature. It states "The venue is one mile South of Pickering - the gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. A free shuttle bus will be operating from the festival to the town centre". I'm simply assuming that is still the case. Parking in Pickering is more or less non-existent.

Gedpipes - I think the answer is probably no.

Leveller - It will replace Cambridge for me too. I hope they do well and grow in stature. I know that many festivals have suffered this year with slow ticket sales. Some not even selling out when they often do on a regular basis. I guess it's been a struggle with there being too many festivals and little cash around. I went to Dent and The Big Session recently and they had guys there giving out fliers to everyone. They can't be accused of not trying at least. For me, it's local, spacious, has ample parking, great line-ups, two beer tents etc. Long may it survive and I hope the organisers continue with it. They appear to have done most things right so far. Mind you, with their experience in running events, they should do of course.

Leveller you've got my old mind churning over now re; your Woodstock comment. I would love to be able to put on a festival on two stage involving 40 bands at Pickering. Those bands (from the Woodstock era or slightly later) would probably be (in no particular order) - Hawkwind, Edgar Broughton Band, Gong (with Gilli Smyth), Kevin Ayers And The Whole World, Kevin Coyne, Curtis Mayfield, The Pink Fairies, Curved Air, John Martyn, Soft Machine, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Fairport Convention, Lindisfarne, The Strawbs, Pink Floyd, Caravan, David Bowie (circa 1970/71), The Faces, Mountain, Richie Havens, Osibisa, Family, CCS, Steeleye Span, Man, Focus, Captain Beefheart, Gram Parsons, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Syd Barrett, Pete Brown, Faust, The Who, Quintessance, Led Zeppelin, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bonzo Dog Do Da Band, Jimi Hendrix.

I was asking a valid question. That question has been partially clarified by one of the organisers. Yes they are putting on a free bus.

So why are they doing it?
So that people can go into Pickering and do whatever they want to do. Some people might want to shop - some might want to sit in a pub and play music.

This is a definite possibility if there is bad weather - which is also a possibility but not one that seems to have been considered so far.

And I know just the opposite. Dent - which you mentioned - was a sellout. I believetrhe Big Session had a big increase in numbers.

Cheltenham, Shepley, Gate to Southwell, Wychwood, Moniaive all had increases.

If you could post the festivals that you know about it may be possible perhaps to see if there are any common issues?

Nutty, I'm glad you're so concerned for our welfare and comfort. We'll probably all end up standing around in the rain getting soaked. Oh, I'll tell you what, let's go into one of these big marquees or the big beer tent (bound to be one). Hey, that's a good idea! Look, it's dry and there's lots of room – and not a pool table, fruit machine or juke box in sight (and if there are any loud drunken yobs, it'll probably be me).

Remember how crap the weather was at Whitby last year? We ended up spending more time wandering round the stalls inside than anywhere else. Tried to get into a couple of singarounds but they were packed like sardines and 8-year old daughter hated it. Not a happy experience. Cambridge, however, even though it was very soggy, was much more enjoyable - lots of space for kids to run around and make a noise without being shushed by grumpy sods with melodeons.

It seemed to me that was precisely what the first sentence meant.

Then you mention Glastonbury - whose other problems of rain and mud and expense and line-ep must have contributed to the sluggish sales - and Cambridge - which to me is a folk festival in name only and counts as a mini-Glastonbury as far as I am concerned. Friends of mine are not going for precisely that reason, not folky enough for them. But I wouldn't dare draw any conclusions from that.

I had the Chair of Folk Arts England on my radio show recently and we discussed this in great detail,(especially done for my listener).

As far as his information was concerned, and he goes to a lot of festivals, tickets sales for folk festivals were on the up and that confirms all my own experience. I quoted festivals where I personally knew this to be the case. And it seems to me that your own experience at Dent and Leicester indicates it to be true.

Whereas "I'm not suggesting that festivals struggled to improve on their sales" means something completely different.

The first is to do with ticket sales leading up to the event. The second is to do with eventual ticket sales. Improved sales could be done at the last minute. For example, a festival might sell only 50% of its total tickets with 4 weeks to go and historically this might have been 70%. But on the actual day of the festival they might sell out as they always do. Therefore ticket sales were sluggish but with the same outcome.

I think that Cambridge and Glastonbury can cope with a little opinionated twat like me don't you Dave? In fact I'm sure they can cope with any opinionated twat! They can probably cope cope with supercilious types too.

Cambridge to me is not a folk festival in name only. It may not be your idea of a folk festival but it is to me. So please tell me which genre you would place the following acts under.....

Bastard and Leveller .... I can assure you I have an extremely good grip on the situation and as far as I am aware I have never yet referred to Saltburn FF which I will be attending.

I draw your attention to the following....

Pickering Folk Festival will bring thousands of visitors to the town over the weekend and will put the Pickering Showground on the map as a serious music venue. Local businesses in Pickering and Malton will benefit from the extra trade and local people will be able to enjoy a weekend of quality entertainment.

if as you state ... nothing is likely to be happening off site, how are the organisers going to achieve this.

You have always made your intentions clear regarding your support of Saltburn Festival and your loathing of those dreadful people in Pickering and their audacity to start a folk festival on your patch.

There's more to going into a town than simply sitting in a pub singing or playing Nutty. I vist Towersey every year and always take a trip into Thame to have a look around and shop. I never feel the urge to start up a session though. Of course Pickering businesses will benefit.

I also think that Simon Boak is entitled to express his hopes and wishes like the rest of us.

Incidentally, don't you think that BASTARD is a bit strong? It's only a bit of fun my dear.

Leveller - Of course, if the concert marquees get too full and the beer tent is bulging, we can still escape the rain by going into the 4000 capacity hall that they have on site. They have a bar there too I believe! I've been told by Rick (one of the organisers) that it's where they're holding ceilidhs and LNE's.

I'm really hoping that the second marquee is too full at 10.30 on Sunday morning of course..........we are really hoping for just 2 hours rain....10-12a.m. on said Sunday!

Ha, ha, ha. Reminds me of the line in St Joan where she goes up to the Dauphin of France and says; "Be you bastard?"

Seriously, though, nutty, I'm sure the good people of Pickering will want to wander the mile down to the site and enjoy the festival if they so wish. I'm equally sure that festival-goers will wander the mile up the road into Pickering (buses or no buses) to buy the odd loaf of excellent bread from one of the bakeries. They may even think "hey, this is a great place, I must come back here again". Well, it won't do the town any harm, will it? I expect that many people, like me, already know Pickering and what it has to offer (I'm sure I'll feel the urge to go and visit the Green Man Galleries). Who knows, some enterprising local traders may even have taken stands at the festival.

Nutty, I'm 100% certain that none of us want to get personal. I simply want us all to enjoy whichever festival we choose to attend. It's a free world (well most of it) and there's enough festivals for all of us. I hope the sun shines on Saltburn and Pickering and we all get a full weekend of quality performance and participation and we all go home looking forward to our next festival. In my case, that'll be Towersey.

More information: Singarounds in the bar over the course of the weekend will be led by our dear friends Alie Byrne & Steve Robinson. These will happen on Saturday lunchtime from 11.30 to 1.30 and on Sunday afternoon from 3.30 to 5.30.

Music sessions in the bar will be led on Saturday afternoon from 2 o'clock to 3.30 by Andrew Dinan and Friends and on Sunday afternoon from 2 o'clock to 3.30 by Chris Dyson and Mark Kane.


Organised sessions will not be programmed for the evenings but you are of course very welcome to start your own.
